“Service lets it down”
Reviewed 19 July 2012

A group of us visited the hotel in early May and given that it was a cheap deal, it was ok.
The bedroom was a good size and a balcony overlooked the plunge pool ( you really couldn't call it a swimming pool). It had a good size bathroom, rather dated and when I went to use the shower, all the water came out of the hose rather than the shower head. A quick trip to reception and it was replaced within hours.
It was roughly a 30 minute walk to the markets and evening dining, basically a straight line so it was hard to get lost.
What really let the hotel down was the staff. I waited 7 minutes one evening at the bar trying to get a drink. No there wasn't a queue, just 4 staff behind the bar having a good chat. I gave up and went elsewhere instead.
Breakfast was the worst. As I didn't eat bread or cakes, it left very little else. I asked for hot water and a banana...you would think I had asked for caviar. 10 minutes later the water arrived and no they didn't have any bananas. The waiting staff either avoided everyone by hiding in the kitchen or putting on the most miserable faces you could imagine.

We were slightly worried before arriving at this hotel as there are a few bad reviews on here from previous travellers, however we were pleasantly suprised!

On arrival we were greeted with a friendly waiter who provided mint tea and pastries, and we were also allowed to check in to our room an hour before check in which was great. The room we were given was fine apart from we were not happy with the view (front facing), we asked if we could change rooms so we have a view of the pool and this was done with no problem.

All in all we were happy with our room, it was very clean and eveything in working order. The bathroom is a little on the small side but this did not bother us. Fresh towels were provided everyday. All rooms have a traditional moroccan feeling to them with the lovely floor tiling. We also had a balcony overlooking the pool area which is a nice view. You do tend to hear the prater call at 4am but I quite liked it!

The only real shame is the pool is tiny, there are only 4 sunbeds so you don't really have much chance of getting one! And the pool area is also the restaurant area so you feel a bit on show at the pool.

All the waiters and staff including the manager are extremely friendly and will try and assist you with anything you need. The manager helped us with directions on a few ocassions and also advised us on where to eat, bars etc. The waiters take pride in what they do, and they do a very good job!

We ate in the hotel restaurant 2 nights and the food was lovely...absolute bargain...88 Dirham for a 3 course meal! But i'm not sure if this price was just for people staying with a Groupon voucher. Also, if you do have a groupon voucher you get 10% off all drinks.

The breakfast is a little repetitive, same pastries and bread each morning, and sometimes some fruit.

Its a lovely little hotel with preety decor, especially the main light in the receiption area which hangs down from the ceiling and lights up at night.

The location is pretty good with easy walking distance to nice restaurants, supermarket and shops. You can get a taxi anywhere and you are wherever you want to be in literally 10 minutes.Always remember to haggle the prices though! We were told it should be 20 Dirham before 8pm to go to the main square etc, and 30 Dirham after 8pm. Taxi drivers will start off with 50 Dirham and you shouldnt be paying this much!

I would highly recommend staying here if your are not too fussed about sunbathing and want somewhere to stay with excellent service. Remember this is a budget hotel so don't expect 5* rooms, however i could not fault the rooms and I loved it there!

The hotel is just fine - a lot better than all others we stayed in in Morocco. Bathrooms are a little shoddy but rooms are large enough, comfortable and well air conditioned.

Pool is tiny and strangely set in the middle of the restaurant outdoor area so not very inviting. Restaurant and bar staff tried but could do with some training.

We spent three nights here. While we were warned about motorbike bag snatchers in this street, we did feel secure in the hotel.

There seems to have been a number of poor reviews of this hotel and I am sure that the experiences of those reviwers are thier honest opinions. But let me tell you about our experience.

We stayed for five nights (3/6/2012 - 8/6/2012) and really enjoyed our stay.

The first thing to point out is that Le Caspien is a budget hotel. If you are looking for luxury and frills then you are going to be disappointed. That being said for what we paid I think we got a bargain, admittedly we were on a Groupon deal so the price was somewhat lower than standard but even at full price I think you'd struggle to do better.

Secondly, It really depends what you are looking for in a hotel. If you want to laze around in the lounge or sunbathe by the pool then there are undoubtably better places to go. However if you want a convenient, comfortable and affordable base to explore Marrakech then Le Caspien certainly fits the bill.

So what is it like, really? Well, the rooms (apart from the two rooms at the rear on the top floor) are "compact" and the bathrooms even more so although we had adequate room and the large built-in wardrobe swallowed up all our thing easily. Whilst we used the in room safe box I wasn't entirely convinced of its security as it was simply bolted to a shelf in the wardobe and not to the wall (we didn't have any problems with it but it is perhaps something that the management might like to review). The hotel is, in places, showing signs of wear and tear - I would guess that it is probably around 20 or so years old - but the houskeeping staff do a great job at keeping it clean and tidy.

We stayed in room 406 which is on the fifth floor and is at the rear of the hotel overlooking the pool so was relatively quiet (the letting rooms start from the second floor - the first floor being occupied by the breakfast room and admin offices and the ground floor by reception and the restaurant/bar), I would imagine that rooms at the front could be a bit noisier but the street is a fairly quiet back street so I don't think it would be a major issue. Previous reviewers have noted the building work that is going on around the hotel and sure enough there is plenty of it with a new hotel (probably) being built next door and a major department store a couple of hundred metres away. However, it looks like all the major construction work has now been completed and subsequently we didn't notice any appreciable noise from either site and certainly nothing at 7 am as other reviews have mentioned. In fact the only "noise" that disturbed our slumbers was the dawn call to prayer from the local mosque but you'd get that even if you were staying in a five star hotel! And in any case that is part of the experience of visiting a country like Morocco.

We thought that the breakfasts were great and, depending upon your choices, quite healthy. There were eggs which I guess you could call scrambled but were a little more solid than we would get in the UK - probably somewhere between scrambled and an omlette but tasty nevertheless and I enjoyed them very much. Along with this were sliced tomatoes, fruit, bread, pain au chocolat and a couple of varieties of pastry, freshly squeezed orange juice which was fantastic, traditional mint tea and arabic coffee (dark and strong) - if you are used to instant coffee you are in for a shock, or a treat (depending upon your point of view!). As I said, we enjoyed the breakfasts and to cap it the breakfast room was a lovely traditional style room with low tables and chairs and very relaxing.

We only ate in the hotel restaurant once - on our first night - and opted for the set menu which at 80 Dirham for a three course meal (under £6 - June 2012) was fantastic value. The set menu prices did vary through the week depending upon what was on it but the most expensive we saw was 120 Dirham (about £8.75). We didn't eat in the hotel again simply because we wanted to try other places - especially the street stalls in the Jemma El Fna.

Despite what a previous reviewer has said I never had a problem getting a cold beer.

One of the great bonuses of this hotel is the pool. OK it is small but after a hot day of sightseeing it was absolute luxury to slide into the cool water and be totally refreshed ready for an evening out. The pool is only heated by the sun (I think) but being small was an advantage in this respect as it did warm up quite nicely - although my partner insisted that it was freezing, mind you with a daytime temperature in the mid 30s even a water temperature in the mid 20s would feel cool ;-)

All the staff were friendly and helpful and spoke good English so there was never any problem sorting things or asking for advice. We only had two very minor issues during our stay: when we arrived there wasn't a plug in the basin and one day we were only left with one bath towel. Both issues were rectified immediately without fuss.

So, all-in-all we thought that Le Caspien was a good find and well worth the £79 we paid for the five nights, I mean where else would you get B&B for under eight pounds a night per head?!

One or two tips for anyone visiting Marrakech and staying at Le Caspien:
1. At the airport don't bother with taxis - get the airport shuttle bus (No. 19) which stops on Avenue Mohammed V around 200 metres from the hotel and costs just 50 Dirham for a return trip (June 2012)
2. Get into town on the No. 1 bus also on Avenue Mohammed V for 3.5 Dirham each way.
3. Don't believe horror stories about the food stalls in Jemaa El Fna - they are great!
4. Beware people offering to guide you for "No money, just for shokran (thank you)" you'll end up at their cousin's carpet shop/spice store/leather shop!

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear have balconies which increase in size as you go up with those on the sixth floor h...

A nice little hotel not too far from “Old Marrakech”. We stayed at the back on the fourth floor, spent two nights there in total interspaced with 2 nights In Essaurioa. It was reasonably busy but very quiet at night and we all managed to sleep a peaceful uninterrupted nights sleep. The hotel itself is nicely cool inside with a wonderful addition of a small pool at the back, which my children made good use of!

The rooms are well kept and decorated nicely, some beautiful examples of tiles throughout. It’s a haven away from the hustle and bustle of Marrakech streets and the heat. The journey into the medina can be done on foot and is only 25-30 minutes (with under 10 year olds!)

The staff are very friendly and approachable. I had a meal in the hotel restaurant when I wasn’t feeling particularly well; and I found the food and service to be excellent. I had the fixed menu at 88DH and enjoyed a delicious spicy chicken salad, with a zingy citrus/chilli slant to it, followed by a club sandwich which was good, but marred by a slightly charred steak and followed by a pastry desert, all in all a good meal at a reasonable price.

This is somewhere I would have no hesitation in recommending to a friend.

Room Tip: From the other reviews and from our experience, i would ask for rooms at the back... ?05s are all on...

We stayed for three nights in this hotel and enjoyed our time there. Breakfasts were good with quite a lot of choice and the meals and service in the evenings were great. Our room was small but very clean. It was noisy at the front of the hotel as mentioned by other reviewers but we didn't ask to change rooms for the short stay. The location was great - out of the busy centre but within a short walking distance of the places we wanted to visit.

Room Tip: Choose a quiet room on the back and on a higher floor

I just came back from Le Caspien. Went there with a friend, we had Group on vouchers. For what was paid, I wasn't expecting much to be honest but Le Caspien lacked some basic things. The breakfast was very very poor, only bread and pastries. Coffee and orange juice were fine. Staff were standing by the breakfast room door and would just replace coffee or whatever was needed if we asked for it!!! It was quite hot, around 40C and in the restaurant they didn't have soft drinks or beer cold! We ordered a drink and had to wait it to be get cold in the freezer. They did have quite a lot of staff at the restaurant/bar but they need someone to manage them properly. One day, we complained about not having cold drinks and at last, the manager(who hardly shows his face) came to apologize, saying it wasn't high season yet and the hotel was just getting ready for Summer. Well, the hotel was fully booked during the days we stayed and even if it was only a single guest, they should provide basic customer service. One day I ordered a morrocon tea and it took 30 minutes to turn up and when it did, it was coffee! It is just unbelievable.
Location isn't too bad, our room was good size and clean. Staff quite friendly but need some guidance.
If you are staying at this hotel, make sure you do not go to a restaurant next to it called Beyrout, it was the worst food I ever had in my life, honestly. They pretend they don't speak English and try to get away with offering you crap food at an expensive price.
Also, don't book a taxi from the hotel, they charged us 200 dirhams and in our way back to the airport, we paid 80 dirhams! They try to make money out of you in every single opportunity, which is a shame because I wouldnt go back to it at all!
