“Incredible getaway”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 November 2013

My partner and I recently stayed at Dar Tinmel, it was lovely. The staff were so friendly and helpful, it's unlike any hotel we've stayed in, so laid back and relaxing. The location is ace and near several landmarks so if you do get lost in the souks it's easy to find your way back. So close, everythings just a few minutes walk.

Would definitely stay there again when I go back to Marrakech

Room Tip: We stayed in the Touareg Suite, was divine

I haven't seen any other Riads, so I have nothing to compare this to, but we were very happy. Like a few others, we initially contacted Magellan, but management referred us over to Dar Tinmel. We were travelling with a 6-month and 18-month child. That obviously could become a disturbance to others in some properties. They recommended Dar Tinmel as more appropriate.

We were offered a very good deal on adjoining rooms so the children could be put to bed in peace. I have no idea whether other riads would be significantly better, but this seemed very nice, the decorations were nice, the courtyard was quiet, and it was all impeccably clean. The roof terrace could use a bit of a refresh, and Philippe mentioned that's the plan for this spring. It wasn't bad or anything, it merely could be better.

Message to other people reviewing riads: stop complaining if the staff doesn't speak English. It's Morocco, they don't speak much English there. My French is pretty much nonexistent, and it was difficult at times, but the staff did as best they could and were happy to call over to Magellan if needed. I have no complaints. Zahira was especially helpful with the fact we had children. We were in and out at strange hours, and we helped out with access to the refrigerator and washing machine.

I do wish the water pressure was better. That was really the only problem for me. I suspect I'd have the same problem everywhere unless I wanted to shell out for one of the major hotels. I've run into the same thing in the UK and Ireland where sometimes the water is gravity-fed from the roof.

The primary benefit of Dar Tinmel is the location. You are literally 10 seconds from the start of the souks and the main square is less than 5 minutes with no major intersections. It's also on the same side of the medina as the airport, which makes transfers easy. It's completely silent in the riad, with the exception of the call-to-prayer.

Don't even think of trying to find the riad on your own. You won't. Let Philippe arrange the transfer. For that matter, let him arrange the excursions too. He's got good opinions and the prices were a touch lower than what we saw posted elsewhere around Marrakech.

Lastly, if you got children, Cafe Bougainville is right across the street and has the pizza and pasta dishes as well as the tagines.

Room Tip: You might ask if one room is known to have better water pressure than another.

We stayed in Riad dar Tinmel for 4 nights in April-11. We had 9 people in our group so we rented the entire Riad which worked our very nicely. This was a big plus because it felt like it was our vacation home with a staff to support us. Riad Magellan manager/staff was in charge of running Riad dar Tinmel when we stayed there. This worked out fine for our stay.

Pros
Breakfasts were good, extensive, served on roof terrace
Very good location for souks and main square
Rooms adequate with nice decor
bathrooms were fine with decent hot water and water pressure
clean
Staff was very helpful and accommodating
very good value for the $
Cons
at end of a very dark street
roof terrace was a bit basic. comfortable but worn out

Overall good to very good Riad, good location, excellent value for money. I would recommend Riad dar Tinmel

Room Tip: book entire riad if you have a group, rental rate is negotiable

We went there 4 nights and overall we were satisfied. It' s very nice little riad, well decorated, with very helpful and kind staff but a bit basic and missing a bit on the details:

Plus
- Excellent location (have to walk a bit to access when coming in or out of the airport but luggage are being taken care of so just a stroll in the medina really)
- Very nicely decorated and well maintained;
- Very very nice staff, always kind and willing to help (but only 2 people);
- Good and rich breakfast;
- Kind of hidden in a little dark street, makes you feel like you know the medina inside out when you go in :P
- Clean sheets and towels;
- Not expensive, good value for money;

Minus
- A bit basic rooms: no door or curtains to separate the main room from the bathroom, some light bulbs dead, water pressure was ok in the shower but you quickly run out of hot water;
- Bed a bid hard;
- Staff is nice but not very proactive, we kind of felt a bit left alone when we arrived;
- Pool is big word more like a giant bathub, still must be nice in summer to freshen up. Wasn't hot enough for us to use it.
- Rooftop is not very well maintained and offers no view;

Would have been a small 4 points if it wouldn't be for a last detail which tips the balance into the 3 points category: no landline so really a pain when you must book anything outside, maybe the roaming fees are acceptable when you come from europe but for asian or american mobiles you'd appreciate having a landline (even if a paying one).

We have just returned from a 3 night stay in the Riad Dar Tinmel. The riad is a small, but peaceful and charming place, well situated for the souks and main square. Service is friendly and the ambience very relaxing. A great little place that we would have no hesitation in returning to.
