“Great Riad in the Medina”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 September 2012

We stayed at Dar Silsila last year during our amazing trip through Morocco with Beyond Travel. This Riad is located inside the gates of the Medina, and easy walking distance to the main attractions. Once inside this Riad is totally quiet and serene. We had dinner here one night which was very good, and lovely breakfasts each morning on our roof terrace. Our rooms were decorated in the traditional style and were very clean. The owner gave us a recommendation to a fantastic restaurant nearby. Highly recommend staying inside the walls of the Medina to experience the labyrinth of lanes and alleyways that make up this historical city.

We had a fantastic time at Dar Silsila. Our host, Jean-Patrick was a true gentleman who obliged our every request. He even set up my mobile phone on the local network for me!

The room was kept immaculate throughout our stay, fresh rose petals were placed on the bed and incense was provided along with olive oil soap and rosewater. The room itself was beautiful and was well maintained with a close attention to detail.

All staff were friendly and polite as well as being unintrusive. The communal areas were, like the rooms, tastefully decorated and immaculate.

The riyad is well positioned in the Medina and it is easy to find your way to the Djemaa but provides the perfect oasis of calm within the fray. I would recommend a transfer to the gueshouse on arrival as, despite a lifetime of travelling in places like India, I don't think we'd have stood a chance of finding this place coming from the airport!

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The proprietor, Jean-Patrick, is a man of taste. Conveniently located in the Medina, and nearly impossible to find on your own at first, this riad is wonderfully designed. We had a porter guide us from our taxi to the riad, through a dark (in broad daylight), narrow, scary alley way. It's just a short walk to the central square, and very near the tail end of the souk, but still manages to be very quiet. It is a fairly new structure (built in the 1990s, I think), but Jean-Patrick had it built to authentic local design specs. You have the best of both worlds--traditional accommodations, but not crumbling--the way it was meant to be enjoyed.

It feels very medieval walking through the Medina, and it's almost like Alice in Wonderland when you're in the amber/rosé-colored alley and open the door. You walk into the open-air internal courtyard where water falls down one wall, and roses float at the pool underneath, and a citrus tree grows in the corner.

LIKE HAVING A PERSONAL CONCIERGE

This was a very last-minute trip, so we really had nothing planned and were open-minded. No plans, no problem! Jean Patrick greeted us and invited us to sit down while he quizzed us on what type of activities we were into and made suggestions. We ended up taking a hike in the mountains, learned about argan oil, and even took a day trip to the fishing town of Essaouira. (Side-note: In Essaouira, we saw more European holiday-makers than we did locals). He took care of everything, such as arranging guides, getting tickets, and making dinner recommendations/reservations. All we had to do was show up. He would even arrange a desert excursion if you wish.

A PLACE TO RELAX-IT'S IN THE DETAILS

Whenever we would come back to our room after being out, the bed would be made, complete with rose petals arranged on top. Upon request, staff will bring up a bottle of wine, black olives, and nuts to the roof terrace, where you can enjoy the sunset among the beautiful, potted flowers and plants and hear the evening call to prayer.

You can even arrange for a massage on the premises at a reasonable price, which is also equipped with a Hammam (Turkish bath, like a sauna) where you can have an attendant scrub you down with their "black soap," which looks exactly like industrial machine grease! (I skipped that part, but lots of people love it, as it is meant to exfoliate, moisturize, and soften skin--go ahead and google it).

BREAKFAST

Don't expect a big, American-style breakfast. We had our breakfasts on the roof terrace among the birds and beautiful blooms. It is a very simple, light breakfast consisting of fresh-made yogurt, thin, airy, Moroccan-style medallion pancakes or sometimes a fried flat bread, basket of plain-tasting round, chewy bread almost the shape of hamburger buns, coffee or tea, and juice. It is served with preserves, honey (wonderful in the yogurt and on pancakes), and butter. If I remember correctly, they even took the time to serve heated milk so that you don't cool down the coffee when you add milk to it.

DINNER

Jean-Patrick can recommend restaurants, or you can have a quiet evening dining in if you let him know ahead of time.

POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS?

There is very little to improve upon, but here goes: 1) Room floors turned my feet black the first day, but seemed to have been cleaned by the next day. Slippers would have been nice. 2) Hot water quickly runs out when taking shower. 3) Need toiletries, like shampoo and conditioner. 4) Although it was very quiet during our stay, sound does carry very easily within the riad, so you should be very quiet, as our room had a window that opened up facing the internal courtyard--but I liked that feature, the window opening to the courtyard. 5) The beds could have been more comfortable. Maybe one of those memory foam toppers would really help.

We loved our time here so much that we canceled our reservations in Casablanca and decided to stay here another night.

That's it!

Room Tip: Jean-Patrick actually walked us through the available rooms and let us choose what we liked. We sta...

Beautifully decorated riad with modern décor drawing on Moroccan and African designs and a gorgeous courtyard and waterfall in the center. Jean Patrick (French, but speaks English fluently as do some of the staff) and his staff were extremely attentive and helpful making transfer arrangements and restaurant reservations. Upon arriving we were greeted with tea and cookies, along with maps and helpful information on the area. Good location in the Marrakech medina with a nice view of the Koutoubia mosque from the terrace. Like many places in the medina it could be hard to find if you do not know where it is. The riad had someone meet us to take us there, which we definitely recommend, or if you would like to try to find it yourself, I put together a set of directions (with pictures) here: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B4KDOs-RLEGxMHBGREhadHJybnc. Simple, Moroccan-style breakfast, mostly breads and spreads. When we asked Jean Patrick if we would be able to get a sandwich at the train station on the day we left Marrakech, he instead offered to make sandwiches for us and packed us a nice bag lunch, which we thought was a really thoughtful touch. The staff was really attentive to our rooms, even closing windows, putting down curtains, and turning on air conditioning so the rooms would be cool upon our return in the evenings. A lot of small touches that really made our stay there a lovely experience.

We loved Dar Silsila. It's ideally located, just inside the gates of the Medina, but down a quiet alley away from the bustle. It's beautifully renovated and decorated, and quiet. Jean Patrick and Salaam, as well as the rest of the staff were friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and had a good experience. We dined in one night and the food was delicious. Breakfasts were served on the rooftop terrace.

The staff made us feel so welcome! The location is very central and easy walking to most attractions. We dined at the hotel and had a rest meal. The room was clean and well appointed. We would stay here again for sure.

Dar Silsila was booked for us by the fabulous Journey Beyond Travel. This place is fantastic, a true reflection of the owner's taste and style. Jean Patrick and his staff were a complete delight. My family and I loved this place. Jean Patrick recommended two wonderful "French" restaurants. A few hundred meters down from the restaurant, Villa Flore and Le Studio outside the medina. Both are chic, reasonably priced and scrumptious and not to be missed.
We will miss Jean Patrick. A wonderful host and raconteur.
