We got our flights and didn't book anywhere to stay until about 2 weeks before we went, by which time most of the riads in the medina were fully booked or ridiculously expensive. We booked here because it seemed about the right thing for the right price. It certainly was.

Upon arriving we were met by the owner, who gave us mint tea and and a large amount of (exceptionally useful) information between our GCSE French and his similar standard English. He was very friendly and warm, as were the rest of his staff. The riad was amazing to look at - the pool looks incredible at night (be warned, it is not heated so beware if you go in November!), the breakfast is lovely, the beds are big and comfortable, our room had an air con system (we didn't use ours), the decorations are strange but somehow work (top of a 6 million dollar man pinball machine hung on the bathroom wall?!), and generally I can't fault anything about it, apart from how far it is from the medina, but it costs a maximum 20 dirham (£1.30ish) to get a taxi, which is easy. And part of the Marrakech experience in my opinion.

In some ways the distance is a good thing: it is very close to the Jardin Majorelle; stuff (eg. water) is very cheap as it's not too touristy; and the only thing we could hear from the riad was the call to prayer from the Minuret and a cockerel crowing in the morning so it is very peaceful. Just be careful of getting scammed for big money by taxis on your way back.

We went during Ramadan, not peak seaon and therefore quieter, so we didn't get to experience the villa in full working glory, but nevertheless it was a wonderfully pleasant stay, most of all because of the delightful owner, Patrick, and his staff, but not least of all because the villa itself was so charming - it really was like being welcomed into someone's home but with service! Breakfast was a sociable affair with Patrick himself, his lovely staff and the other two couples who were staying, (both French - we're English, and it's advisable for at least one of you to have a little French under your belt! - but two English girls arrived towards the end of our stay, which did liven the conversation up a bit, for us anyway). The pool in the court yard was a little haven (enough space for two or three loungers on either side and lovely and quiet save the chirrping of love birds from time to time), and although we didn't dive in, everyone else did. If you fancy a beer, which is elusive in Marrakech, Parick's bar is well stocked. We did notice one of the couples had brought a bottle of JD and a pack of cards with them. During your stay, don't forget to look out for Monsieur Tortue lazing about the place.

Like previous reviewers, my wife and I found Patrick to be a very kind and very knowledgeable host, providing welcome help in getting around a city that can sometimes be confusing. A delicious evening meal is available if desired. Having been in Marrakech at a very hot time of year, we particularly appreciated three features of La Villa Bleue. (1) The individually controllable air conditioning in our room was up to the job, maintaining a comfortable temperature inside even when it was 37 C outside. (2) Unlike the small plunge pool found in many riads, the proper swimming pool here provides great refreshment after pounding hot pavements. After a swim one can enjoy the poolside terrace relaxing on proper furniture, looking at neatly kept bushes and trees in tubs and listening to birds in a small aviary. (3) Though no very great distance away, the Villa Bleue is located outside the walls of the medina, parts of which can become a bake-oven at mid-day. The Villa is on a small straight street with trees and therefore is well placed to catch a cooling breeze.

The Villa Bleue was unlike other hotels I've stayed in. It was an integral part of the whole Marrakech experience. Patrick, the owner took the time to pick me up at the train station in his air-conditioned car (see photo!) which set the stage for an amazing time. Patrick and his wife were great company and were so patient with my French. The rooms were very different from a standard hotel and there was a real family atmosphere. The location is quiet and about 30 minutes walk to the square, or less if you are prepared to do battle with the taxi drivers. My only complaint is that none of the staff had heard the song "Marrakech Express" by Crosby Stills and Nash - how bad is that! ... but.... I wouldn't stay anywhere else.
