We stayed at Dar Charkia for a week in April 2011 and had a great time. Lisa and Michael, the owners, were helpful and informative. Their team of local staff were on hand to advise and sort out problems, which was really useful. We stayed in the Khmissa room, accessed via your own private stairs, which was a large private double with air con, a fireplace, a sofa, double doors looking down over the small plunge pool, and a private bathroom with double sinks, loo and walk in shower. It was all was kept very clean, as was the riad. We had breakfast every day in the riad's courtyard, with things like yogurt and fruit, pancakes, bread and pastries, jam, freshly squeezed orange juice, local or English tea, etc. When we arrived they gave us a very helpful map, and pointed out places to visit (and not to visit), good restaurants and cafes, etc. They helped arrange a trip to the Atlas mountains for us, which was a very interesting day out, as well as a trip to a hammam (Les Bains de Marrakech, very good, other good cheaper options local to the riad), a shopping guide called Catherine for a full on day in the souks haggling (great fun), and lots of restaurant bookings. We liked the local staff, who helped when my husband was unwell for a day, as well as finding someone to make up a new belt for me to go with an old buckle I had, and helping to find suitable packaging for getting some of our purchases home in one piece – that’s the sort of help you are so grateful for! The location of the riad was good – it’s in a quiet, well to do part of Marrakech, but only about 8-10 minutes walk from the Jemaa El Fna square.

My only small niggle with Dar Charkia was that a couple of times on returning to the riad, we knocked on their front door (they don’t give you a key) and no one answered. On one of these occasions a fellow guest kindly came down from the roof terrace to let us in! The other time we were admitted finally by a member of staff, but with a couple of local guys standing literally at the end of the passageway that leads to the front door, with no reply, we were a liitle unnerved.

My top tips of things to do would be a hammam (Les Bains was good but there are plenty of other options), visit the Ben Youssef Medersa (a local Koranic school, get the combined ticket with the Marrakech museum and Qoubba Almoravide, a washing pool), the Bahia Palace and Saadian Tombs, and after about 8pm, the Jemaa El Fna square. We ate at the Argana restaurant that is on one side of the square, the food’s ok but the view from the side of the roof terrace is what you really go for – try and get a seat nearest the square, even if you have to move tables mid eat. Don’t bother with the Café de France near the square. We went for a 45 minute caleche ride for 120 dirhams for 2 people – haggle to get it at this price or cheaper as they will try it on. Kosybar near the Badi Palace is nice for food and late night drinks – if you come in the day, you have the benefit of seeing the storks nesting on the top of the next door palace. If you love haggling, you’ll love the souks – for general buying, start at 15-30% of the original price and leave yourself negotiating room. You generally don’t want to end up paying more than 50% of the original asking price maximum. The other must do as far as we were concerned was the Majorelle Gardens, towards the Gueliz area of Marrakech. It really is beautiful, but try and go earlier or later in the day, as at other times it can be full of tour groups. The rest of Gueliz isn’t worth exploring in my opinion – it does have modern shopping if that’s what you want.

Owned by Michael and Lisa who are just wonderful people, this Riad defies description - a beautiful relaxed oasis of calm deliciously decorated and with staff who cannot do enough for you. The food is wonderful, the accommodation likewise. ANyone travelling to Marrakech and booking a Riad simply shouldn't miss this place.

Dar Charkia is a gorgeous little hotel in the medina of Marrakech. My parents and I had a wonderful four day stay there, where we dined on their delicious breakfasts, relaxed in the multiple sitting areas, and got to know the lovely staff. The location is ideal and the shopping tips (and map) are superb. Lisa and Michael are great hosts. Highly recommended!

My boyfriend and I stayed at Dar Charkia at the beginning of March for a long weekend. Lisa and Michael, the owners, had been extremely helpful prior to arrival which was great - better than any service I have ever had anywhere else! When we got there, we were not disappointed - the Riad is lovely, as are all the staff - it is a very friendly, welcoming place - I would highly recommend a stay here to any of my friends or family.
Thank you for a memorable break, Lisa, Michael and all of your staff at Dar Charkia! x

We stayed three nights with Dar Charkia and everything was absolutely lovely. They do a good job of working with you on booking and arranging tours and the like. The staff is excellent also. The hotel itself is beautiful and perfectly kept. We did not eat in the hotel, but we saw other guests dining and the food looked and smelled amazing. We took a day tour with the inhouse guide Catherine to Ozurate and had a wonderful day. Catherine is very knowledgeable about the area and Moroccan history and just plain good company too. In sum, would highly recommend a stay at the Dar Charkia.

We have just returned from a short break in Marrakech and felt compelled to add to the existing glowing reviews of this fantastic Riad in the heart of the Medina. Lisa and Michael, the owners of Dar Charkia, made us feel welcome long before we arrived in Morrocco by helping us to put together an itinerary that really made the most of our limited time. On arrival, they went out of their way to make us feel at ease and gave us invaluable tips on everything from where to buy the best local goods to how much to pay for taxis and horse-drawn carriage rides. We really noticed how much better informed we were than other tourists that we spoke to who were not staying at Dar Charkia! Our room was spotlessy clean and tastefully decorated with both local and international artifacts, as was the whole Riad, and the breakfast was plentiful and delicious. We will definitely be visiting again!

My girlfriend and I spent the weekend of my 30th birthday in Marrakech and chose to stay at Dar Charkia. On arrival, the lovely Lisa gave us a warm welcome and was extremely helpful in talking us through the map of Marrakech. All her recommendations were first class and my only complaint with the trip is that we didn't have enough time to explore each and every one of these. All the staff are extremely friendly and attentive, helping us in every way we asked. Apart from being amazingly clean and comfortable our room was so full of character that it is impossible to feel anything but relaxed and happy. Location is great - allows you to escape the hustle and bustle while being close enough to also enjoy the hustle and bustle! I could go on and on but all that's left to say is stay here - you won't be disappointed!
