“So good we went back”
Reviewed 23 February 2009

For the first time ever my wife and I returned to a hotel. We've stayed in lots of places and often said "that was nice - we should go back" - but until now we've always ended up trying a new destination. However, when looking for some winter sun this February we decided to head back to Dar Charkia, where we had stayed in February 2008.

As before, everything was great. Smooth transfer with Mustapha, their very safe and reliable driver, big room (the Douiria suite), great breakfast. As ever, the hospitality from Lisa and Michael was exceptional - great suggestions for restaurants, well organised day trip to the Atlas, annotated map with their latest finds in the city. We noticed that almost all of the staff were the same as a year ago, which is a great indication of the relationship that Lisa and Michael have with them. Lisa also very kindly offered to arrange for a cushion-maker who had produced a number of cushions for the Riad to come in to discuss making some cushions for us - which she did, within the space of three days.

All in all, we had a wonderful time as before. For anyone wanting to visit Marrakech and get the best from it, I can't recommend Dar Charkia, Lisa and Michael enough.

We spent four nights at Dar Charkia, getting away from it all without the kids. It is amazing how tranquil the atmosphere there is, given that it is in the medina, just a stone's throw from all the sights and and sounds of the city. Lisa and Michael were so welcoming, and gave us lots of useful tips and information. It gave us the confidence to go exploring, and made sure that we didn't miss anything. Nothing was too much trouble - restaurant bookings; shopping advice; even a tip on the local barber! The rooms are fabulous - a distinctly modern twist on traditional morrocan decor. We will definitely be going back!

We recently stayed at Dar Charkia for a valentine's weekend and spend 3 nights in Marrakech. Lisa was a wonderful help to us both before the trip and when we arrived. We received plenty of advice on restaurant and cafe recommendations and also how to get about in the Medina which was an enormous help as well as recommended shops in the souks. The Riad itself was stunning - We had a beautiful quiet dinner there on our first evening and wonderful breakfasts on the roof terrace each morning. The rooms and courtyard are beautifully designed by Lisa and I would recommend it to anyone. It is only 7-8 minutes walk to the main square and less to the top end of the souks. We did not need to take a taxi anyway apart from to and from the airport which they conveniently arranged for us. All the staff were extremely helpful and added some lovely touches to our valentine's day breakfast. We look forward to going back and staying there again - We really don't think we could have picked a better riad.

We have just returned from a 4 day break here.We booked this riad on our daughter's recommendation. Lisa and Michael deserve all the positive comments they have received on this site. From the moment you arrive, you are made to feel welcome and Lisa's excellent (verbal) introduction to Marrakech and exploring the Medina, was both reassuring and immensely helpful. I don't think our Lonely Planet map would have been sufficient!
The riad is situated in a quiet area of the medina, and is very comfortably and thoughtfully furnished. I particularly loved our bathroom, with its huge shower and lovely shower gel etc. The delicious breakfast on the roof terrace in the morning sun was a special treat! All the staff were friendly, helpful and courteous without exception, and the trip Lisa organised for us with her in-house guide Marco was excellent, and we visted parts of the medina we may not have otherwise seen. Our favourite meal out was recommended by Lisa.....Chez Pascal in the new town, friendly relaxed and excellent value French food.

Just returned from 4 nights in the Dar Charkia riad and can honestly say we loved every minute. We stayed in the Khmissa suite which was beautiful and there are nice, thoughtful touches like the white towelling robes, UK plug adapter, free mineral water and nuts/sweets, nice toiletries, a safe, pretty padded coat hangers, original paintings on the walls... The room - indeed, the whole riad - was decorated beautifully. It's also in a good location, not too far to walk to most places. It's hard to add anything original from the other comments really: the place is just beautiful and Lisa, Michael and their staff are so friendly, helpful and obliging. Lisa was also very helpful prior to our arrival and sent me, promptly, many emails answering my questions, as well as arranging transfer from/to the airport, recommending restaurants and days out. We ate in the Riad on our first night and I can highly recommend this - food was lovely (there were 2 veggies in our party of 5, this was no problem at all, and you didn't feel like you were being fed poor, lazy substitute dishes) and we ate in the beautiful courtyard. Lisa also booked us into a few restaurants we might not otherwise have found by ourselves (including the Lotus Privilege, which was just lovely and highly recommended for a special treat). We also had a spa afternoon at the Jardins de la Koutoubia hotel - another treat which I would highly recommend. As first time visitors to Morocco, we appreciated Lisa's advice and just wish we had stayed longer so we could have done more things!

The Riad has enough nooks and crannies and comfy outdoor seating areas so that you can find your own space, even when there are other guests present. You never feel like you're on top of each other, there's plenty of room to find a cosy spot to read, sip a drink and chill out.

Service was wonderful - all the staff were lovely without being in your face, yet were on hand should you need them. Breakfast is also worthy of a mention - freshly prepared, different things each day so you didn't get sick of the same thing, and you could eat anywhere in the riad - as Lisa said, you're on holiday so you can do what you want.

I would definitely stay here again and can't recommend Dar Charkia highly enough. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

We spent our last night in Marrakech at Dar Charkia and we wish we had found it sooner. What sets this riad a part are the owners Michael and Lisa, who are expert at helping visitors navigate the often
complicated commercial and cultural realities of Marrakech. As full time residents and owners (unlike many riads) they are able to provide a customized experience that ensures each guest experiences the very best of Marrakech.

The owners have done an incredible job decorating this stately riad, it is sophisticated, hip and homey all at once. We would love to come back and rent the whole place out for a week of friends and family.
Well done.

Staying at Dar Charkia for our first experience of Marrakech was perfect, memorable and thoroughly enjoyable. Nothing was too much trouble for our hosts Lisa and Michael. Restaurants were recommended, customs of Morrocco explained, helpful suggestions provided; hammans and spa treatments booked. Basically you were helped out when you wanted it and left to your own devices when you didn't. And thats the kind of hosts I like!
The Riad itself was geat too - decor was stylish, the staff were friendly and attentive; the food was good too. Most of all it was relaxing - like a home from home. I would highly recommend.
