“Mediocre At Best”
Reviewed 4 November 2010

After all the rave reviews we had been reading we were expecting something a bit exceptional. It was not. Clos des Arts is very basic and mediocre at best.

To be fair I must say the staff tried their best to please. Unfortunately, the owners seem very commercially driven and the ambiance is a bit souless in that respect. We had the impression we were being overcharged for our stay and were advised by other guests to check our bill carefully. Prices that had been quoted to us were,at the end, considerably more because of "service and taxes."

The location of the riad is off a very busy market and the noise is constant. Even late into the night it was hard to sleep because of passing motor bikes constantly whizzing by. The area is dimly lit and simply did not feel safe at night.

Food was not bad, but every portion was carefully measured and there was always an excuse about the quantity.

In short, the riad did not not at all live up to it's reviews and we feel we could have done better someplace else.

As the owners of the riad we would like to point out some few issues that make us believe this review is not genuine, perhaps written by an unfair competitor:

The riad is not located on a market street but actually on a very calm area behind the Dar si Said Museum. No noise is coming from whizzing motorbikes, it is impossible as we are on a dead end lane.

We don't have any service charge. Taxes are mentioned in the website and at booking time.
No extras are charged unless agreed upon.

Over some years and having stayed in a number riads in Marrakech, Clos des Arts perhaps stands out as a gem. Smallish, well appointed, clean, quiet and centrally located within 3 or 4 minutes walk of Place Jemma El Fna and the souks. Helpful staff (who can cook too), great roof terrace and its plung pool - all under the watchful eye of Massimo or Georgina, for whom no request seemed too much trouble. Excellent all round - will certainly return.

I can't say enough about this place. Massimo and Giorgina are welcoming hosts and make you feel very comfortable. The riad is very comfortable, an ideal location in the medina and beautifully decorated. We had a very early departure on our last day and they arranged to have breakfast served for us at 5:45. Coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice and a delicious breakfast by their wonderful staff. Stay here, you will not be disappointed.

We stayed at the Riad and it was beautiful - amazing ambience and very tranquil, but close enough to walk to the Medina. Georgina, Massimo & the staff were brilliant and helpful and it was truly a home from home (including a special dinner of home-made ravioli in sage butter when one of us fell sick!). We had a baby and the team were very accomodating - including putting a special cot and duvet for him. We loved our stay and it has taken me months to put up a review but we wanted to do it! One thing i would state is - make sure you get Georgina to organise a trip to Essaouira and do your shopping there - not the medina - rip off! The haggling is much easier and less intense plus you get the same stuff you get in the medina at 10-30% of the price. Thanks very much for the wonderful stay!!! Y,A & baby Y

We went 3 nights in this beautiful, small Hotel. The owers Giorgina and Massimo were very helpfull with tripps, restaurants, Spa and excursions in the valleys. The weather was like summer, 26 °C, fantastic!!
We really enjoyed the breakfast on the sunny roof and the quietness.
The room was very clean and romantic, we will sure come back next year for all the week.

Comfortable hotel - you feel instantly at home. It's decorated with exquisite taste. The staff were delightful, friendly and polite. The rooms and hotel have an air of being in Morocco but at the same time you feel as relaxed as if you were in your own living room.

Giorgina and Massimo are charming hosts, Massimo knows everybody in The Medina and they know him. Giorgina arranged a trip for us into the Atlas Mountains, which was perfect. We had two meals at the Riad Clos des Arts, which were delicious and breakfast on the roof terrace every morning was a joy.

Massimo gives a very good introduction to Marrakech with useful tips and he answered all our questions. Marrakech is not easy and you need hosts like Giorgina and Massimo
to make it work. All this and at a very reasonable cost. There may be Riad's as good as 'Clos des Arts' but none better.

Massimo and Giorgina were incredibly warm and welcoming from the first email query through the end of our stay. Giorgina arranged a Marrakech guide, our hiking day trip and transfer ahead of our stay - all were splendid. Once we arrived, they were attentive without being intrusive and ensured our stay exceed expectations on every level. The location is ideal for exploring the city, yet very tranquil. Although Massimo and Giorgina can recommend and book many interesting restaurants, the food at the Riad was outstanding. Another plus was the WiFi access as our teenage sons are glued to their smartphones at every idle moment! We cannot recommend Riad le Clos des Arts highly enough.
