“Fantastic Riad Alma”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

My husband and I had a fantastic few days staying at the Riad Alma. A peaceful oasis amid the busy city. Staff were brilliant and could not do enough to help. Will return, hopefully next year, to see more of Marrakech and will definitely be booking the same Riad. Rooms were lovely, food was great and people were charming.

My friend and I just got back from our stay in Marrakech, Riad Alma was an amazing place to stay. On arrival a lovely lady who did not speak english ( most of the people speak English) welcomed us with a map and to the best she could directed us to good spots and tourist attractions. She made us a lovely mint tea and some pastries, she also took our case to the room and made us feel very at ease and welcome.
Our first night was over whelming, after our lovely welcome we decided to head straight to the souks. . . It was crazy! We were not prepared for the culture, although friendly majority of stall holders will try to get your attention and draw you in to buy. (Tip: go to souks in the morning/lunch it is less busy and much more enjoyable!) As we were over whelmed we were not sure where to eat and ended up heading back to the Riad where at 8.30 they had no problem in cooking us up a three course meal for 250dh each - pricier then most of Marrakech but good food and in reality not expensive at all!
The breakfast is traditional at the Riad, however kindly they made omelettes as unfortunately I am quite a fussy eater sometimes, however the pancakes and a flat pastry crepe were amazing with the strawberry jam! Breakfast is a great offering here.
The taxi was fab - a guy was at airport to meet us to take us to Riad. And cost 150dh each way - this is organised by the Riad.
Only down side is you have to walk through a few passage ways - taxis can not get directly outside hotel but we didn't have any trouble, passages are well lit and it is mainly children playing around and families. Just be careful at night.
All in all the hospitality could not have been better and I would highly recommend Riad Alma. Great staff, great location, great prices, amazing decor and a true Moroccan experience. I will definitely come back!!!

We really loved Riad Alma and would recommend this as the best place to stay in Marrakech.
It is away from the really busy part of the City but in easy walking distance of everything.
The staff are brilliant and so helpful.
We had a superb meal in the Riad on the first night, which was a set menu of delicious Morrocan salads, a fabulous lamb tagine with dried grapes and caramelised onions and a very nice dessert. We asked for a recommendation for a traditional restaurant for the following night and the Riad's owner booked us into what is considered to be the best Morrocan restaurant in Marrakech. It was very good but we decided it was not as good as the brilliant home cooking of Riad Alma. We therefore booked for dinner on our last night and had a different selection of delicious salads and a Chicken Tagine with preserved lemon that was amazing.
Our room was lovely, they have a lovely roof terrace and all the management and staff made you feel like you were staying with friends.
We so enjoyed Marrakech and the Riad Alma will be our choice when we return. This is a real discovery and it gets a five star review on all counts.

Room Tip: Room 2 shares a small balcony overlooking the pool

Riad Alma is in the southern area of the Medina near the Palace. It is quite amazing to step off of the alley and into such a quiet, lovely place--the common areas, terrace, and rooms were wonderful. We had a large bedroom with a large bathroom on the upper level and our own terrace that over looked the pool. It was so nice to sit outside in the morning and evenings. The staff was helpful (we know barely any French) and very kind. Martina, the manager, made us dinner reservations two nights in a row and both restaurants were excellent.
The riad is about a 15 minute walk to the main square and we felt the price was a great deal for the room and service we received. I don't have a negative thing to say--you really can't go wrong with Riad Alma!

This is a beautiful Riad, in the southern part of the Medina. It's a 15 minutes walk to the Jemaa el Fna square. The staff are very friendly. There is a little pool (in April, the water was quite cold).

This Riad is really a hidden gem outside the city walls. Each room in the communal ares are decorated beautifully. It feels as if you are staying in someones home. Our room was very nice and was a bi-level room. Seperate toilet, large sink area and open style shower. Very clean and yet a bit dark, windows open onto the riads inside courtyard. Michele the owner was there during our stay with her adorable dog. She was helpful and even gave us a ride as we were heading in the same direction she was going.
Taxi's must be called and drop off is outside the main alley which is a bit scary at night. During the day you can walk to the Medina/souks in 10-15 minutes. We took cabs every night and during the day walked around.
The breakfast was good. You can order eggs and you are given all the Moroccan items such as yogurt, moroccan pancakes, etc. We ate in the courtyard which was quiet and pleasant.
We felt the price for 4 nights was very reasonable (comapred to NYC of course anything is :)
As a traveler i feel the only thing to think about before booking here is location.Do you want to be in the modern section where you can walk to restaurants at night and into the souks in a few minutes and reduce cabing or get a true authentic experience, away from the hustle and bustle and walk a bit further and spend extra $ on cab fares at night. Since i can't fine a negative thing to say about our expereince at this lovely Riad it boils down to personal preference and often location, feeling safe and money often are factors. The area is safe but walking in the alleyways after a cab drops you off and having men walking behind you can feel threatening. the cab driver will gladly walk you to the door though, which was done for us on night #1, then we braved it the other nights. Loved this Riad!

I've always wanted to stay in a traditional Riad rather than the large hotels outside of the old city walls, I'm very pleased we stayed here.

Transfers were booked with the Riad, the taxi's cannot get to the door so one of the staff was sent to pick us up on arrival from the nearest point, a nice touch I thought as we could easily have got lost.

I thought the Riad was well located, about 10 mins walk from a number of sights and about 15-20 mins from the main square. Being a little further out it was very quiet which we appreciated. Once you got used to the number of motorcycles moving up and down the streets getting around became quite easy, just make sure you walk in straight tlines so that they can get past you easily!

The room was of a reasonable size with a joined balcony (we were with friends) which was very useful. The bed was enormous and didn't appear to be 2 singles pushed together as in a lot of hotels. The bathroom was a good size with a large shower. The whole room, and Riad for that matter, was very clean. The whole Riad was cleaned daily including terrace areas.

The plunge pool looked OK but it was a little cool whilst we were there to use.

The breakfast was continental style, there was plenty to eat, including the offer of omlettes, and there was no time limit to coming down for the meal, another plus point that made the stay relaxing.

We had a couple of evening meals at the Riad and both were very nicely cooked and presented, if a little pricey for Marrakech.

The staff were excellent, nothing was too much trouble, we had drinks on the roof terrace on a few occasions and there was never an issue in them taking the trays to the roof. Directions and advice were given freely with no feeling that you were imposing.

The nearest restaurants are about 5-10 mins walk, which we found OK, with a few street vendors being closer.

Room Tip: If you go with friends ask for the rooms with adjoining balcony.
