“Brilliant Riad in wonderful city”
Reviewed 18 February 2011

Excellent position in centre of city. A Beautiful Riad which we would definitely recommend. Staff and facilities were great. Had 5 days in early February. Went for day trip to Atlas Mountains / Ourika Valley which is highly recommended - the hotel arranged this for us. Ask for Hakim to take you - he is an excellent driver and guide.

Great place - only 2 issues:

1. The beer / lager was not cold enough ! - there's nothing like a v. cold beer when it's hot.
Unfortunately, the majority of the time the beer was marginally cold (at best) or warm (at worst).
2. The air conditioning units need to be more effective

The location of this riad is perfect, but this is also it's down-side. The wailing from a next door mosque from 5 am is impossible to ignore, while the noise from restaurant diners also continued beyond midnight.

Whilst the staff were all friendly, few spoke good English.

It was also disappointing when, after my wife fell ill just as the main course had arrived in the restaurant, we received a full bill the next day, even though we had to leave just after the starter. A goodwill gesture would have been welcome.

Thank you for staying with us and mentioning that Riad Monceau as a perfect location in the historical quarter of Marrakech.
I would like to take this opportunity to say a few words about the old city of Marrakech.
Morocco is a Muslim country and in old quarters of the cities – but in new quarters as well ! – you find dozens (hundreds!) of mosques. The idea for Muslim people is that wherever you stay you MUST hear clearly the prayer call. That is part of the Muslim religion... and that is also part of the package when you book for a stay in such countries!
A guest staying in a hotel – luxury or not – located in a place like the Marrakech historical quarter (we call it the Medina) must be prepared to hear the prayer call five times a day and years of experience show us that most guests understand this (I would even say that most of them appreciate this) at this is fully part of the special ambiance and atmosphere you get here and that make things so different.
While we sympathize with this guest’s plight, he does not represent a typical guest at a hotel located in the old city of Marrakech.

Apart from one quibble (see below), everything was excellent. Helpful and friendly staff, great location, high ambience.

However, this is a popular Riad for dinner, and the noise from guests at dinner is constant and intrusive if you have a room on the courtyard. Presumably staff would have felt embarassed about asking gusets to keep their noise down, and we did not want to put them in that position, so did not ask them to do so. We did raise this as an issue with the manager.

The Riad is a real haven during the day, being peaceful, relaxing and quiet.

But if you're someone who needs their sleep, beware!

We stayed here for three nights at the beginining of Nov. I can unhesitatingly recommend it as a fantastic place to stay in Marrakech. As previous reviewers have said, our room was very comfortable and tastefully decorated, and the staff were unfailingly friendly and helpful.

Many people have also mentioned the good location - but as first-time visitors to Marrakech we hadn't realised how important that was. It really IS ideal - just a couple of minutes walk away from the main square, but without all the bustle and excitement that goes on there ! You couldnt ask for better ...

We got the Riad to organise our pick-up from the airport. Very smooth experieince, and recommended as the taxi can't get to the Riad, so we were met by someone from the Riad who took us for the last few yards though the alleys.

We also got the Riad to arrange a days excursion for us, out to the Ourika Valley in the Atlas Mountains. That worked out very well. We had our own car and driver, and he took us to interesting places on the way ( and found us a guide for the walk up to the waterfalls at Ourika).

Finally, I MUST mention the Restaurant, which really was excellent. Wonderfully good food, and surprisingly good wines ( all Morroccan).

All in all, a very enjoyable stay for us.

We chose the Riad based on the positive reviews on Trip Advisor. How right they were! The 8 roomed Riad is owned by a French designer and it showed. Everywhere was immaculate and the food and service matched the decor.
The dining room has an a la carte menu that preferably needs to be ordered in advanced but on the two nights we ate at the Riad we had the 5 course ‘taster’ menu of Moroccan food. As I don’t eat meat they made special veggie dishes for me on both nights.
Booking if recommended for dinner, even if you’re a resident, as the place has a top class reputation and caters for external diners as well as residents.
My wife and I both had a great 90 minute Rasul treatment and massage in the rooftop Hamman. At around the equivalent of £35 this was a bargain by UK standards.
The only minor thing we would have changed was that we organised our transfer from the airport via our travel agents (Thompsons) rather than the Riad. This meant we were ‘handed over’ to a guy with a handcart for our luggage in the nearby Djemaa el Fna market place as this was the nearest we could get to the Riad by car. Our ‘porter’ made it clear that our luggage was going nowhere until we paid 50 dirhams (we settled on 30!) For the return journey we got the Riad to organise the transfer which cost less than
Not the cheapest place to stay in Marrakech but worth every dirham!
