Riad Dar Eliane
Ranked #363 of 502 Hotels in Marrakech
Reviewed 15 March 2010

We stayed here 5 nights in February 2010 and had a fantastic time; the old city of Marrakech is an experience and staying in a Riad is a vital part of that experience, arriving in the mayhem of the old Medina you need a bit of reassurance and that is precisely what you will receive when your taxi pulls up in a small square but with the porter from Dar Eliane there to meet you, a brief walk down a street that will become familiar, brings you to a door behind which everything changes, calm, peace and quiet return. This riad is definitely very good, great location very charming and romantic, the staff are very friendly and helpful. Marrakech is a wonderful city and for anyone planning a visit, remember you haven't been unless you've been to the old city I can thoroughly recommend this Riad.

Some might think it's location tucked away, down a very small alley, 10 mins walk from the main square is a disadvantage but don't let this deter you from this super little place. We never felt threatened either at night or in the day (but then so much of this is down to how you act and dress). It has 4 double rooms which you can book individually (or apparently you can book the whole riad) - they're all done out beautifully. As it is a traditional riad the room all look into the central courtyard - we noted that some people felt they lacked privacy but we certainly never felt that as we were either out exploring, sleeping or chatting to the other lovely guests staying at the riad which was all part of the adventure. We were well looked after by Bouchra and Slimane - if you needed anything organised like taxis, dinner, etc, they were always most helpful (they also made sure that if you got lost they were always available at the end of the phone to come and rescue - thankfully, we didn't have to call upon them but we were in no doubt that they would have been there). Breakfast was hearty, best described as a Morrocan continental breakfast of pancakes, a orange (flower?) cake, a sort of a muffin/crumpet with jam, fresh OJ and the best coffee ever all served up in the central courtyard. You could have dinner at the rias, cooked by Bouchra - whilst we decided to try out the food stalls on the square and enjoy the hustle and bustle, some of our fellow guests had supper in and said it was very good. All in all, a great place and well worth a stay for 2-3 nights if you want a taste of real Marrakesh! If you're not vaguely adventurous, then this probably isn't for you (more traditional Western style hotels can be found outside the Medina).

My friend and I stayed for a long weekend in February, Bouchra and her team make you feel very welcome in what will become your second home. The standard of the rooms is very high with a lot of attention to detail.
The food was by far the best we had in Marrakech. They were always on hand to look after you when you returned from your day’s adventure.
Do not hesitate to stay here, you will not be disappointed.

Stayed 3 nights in Feb. 2010.

PROS
- friendly welcome
- nice furnishing
CONS
- the place is so small you can't get any privacy
- poor location in the far end of the old quarter ; quite frightening at night.

Ok if you book the 4 rooms of the house and if you are early sleepers.

Staying in the medina in Marrakech is for the more experienced traveller or travellers looking for a real experience, 99 times out of 100 our clients express there complete satisfaction with the accommodation we provide and its value for the money.

There is no denying that poverty exists in Marrakech, life is harsh and the people are poor, but they always greet you with a smile and are willing to engage in a conversation to offer help, advice, and directions, the children play in the streets late into the evening until they hear their mothers frustrated cries calling them to bed, all in all this is really nothing to worry the weary travellers who make there way through the maze of the very safe souks to the riad.

The Dar Eliane must be one of the prettiest small hotels in Marrakech, the traditional design and colours (all completely furnished with Moroccan artifacts) is really chic and it gives you a real sense of old Marrakech. There is a charming roof terrace with great views of the Atlas Mountains and the rooftops of the Medina, the staff at the hotel are very polite and attentive.
I had a wonderful time exploring the souks, where your senses are assaulted by the wonderful, sights, smells and sounds and just a short walk takes you back to the hotel which is a wonderful base from which to explore the city.
Having never visited Morocco before I felt completely safe at all times and well looked after. If you want a relaxing and fun stay in Marrakech this is the place to book.

The pictures on the website for this wonderful Riad don't really do it justice. We stayed for 3 nights and were really looked after by Bouchra, Slimen and John who went to a lot of effort in ensuring our external trips were organised to our requirements. The food was excellent and for anyone looking for a realistic feel to Marrakech life within the Medina this Riad is second to none....not suited to everyone as there are silmilar places to be found in the more posh area's of the City.....but for us as we wanted to get the real feel with the added opulance....this Riad was perfect.

I thought I would write a short review just to let anyone who is thinking of travelling to Marrakech to just do it. I came with a friend just for a short break, we decided at short notice to get away and do something different and what a great time we had. There were lots for us to see and do and the staff at the Dar Eliane were really helpful in helping us prioritise what was important for us to see as we were only there for 3 nights. We tried to decide what we wanted to do from the UK but until you are here it is pretty hopeless as websites offering trips are really expensive and once in Marrakech you will find them a lot cheaper.
