Ryad Zahraa

Reviewed 8 February 2009

Hello fellow travelers. My name is Richard and I stayed at this great place called Riad Zahraa while I was studying in Meknes, Morocco. I had such a great time, I am now planning a return trip with my family.

The riad is very comfortable and beautiful. The owners and staff are very kind and responsive to your needs. The meals are fresh, authentic, and delicious. Be sure to visit one of the public ovens--just around the corner--where you can enjoy truely fresh-baked bread!

Another nice thing, is that the riad is in the "medina" the heart of the cultural and economic center of Meknes. After shopping, sightseeing, and in my case studying, I took a well deserved rest at a traditional hammam (bath house)--there is one just a few doors down from the riad. I remember the intricate tile work and that the water was heated by a wood-fired oven. It's amazing how good hot water and steam feels on your skin--the hammam was a true and rare experience.

Simply put, I had a wonderful time making friends and creating memories in Meknes and at Riad Zahraa. I can't wait to go back with my family!

We have found this riad occasionally, from the reference of another riad on the main square, which was full at that day
The riad was indeed the place we were looking to stay - located in the center of medina it is tastefully decorated in Moroccan style but without any extremeties (like hole in the floor instead of a proper toilet)

The rooms are quite small, mostly without windows and with dim lights, so do not expect to spend some quality time there. We were staying in December, and despite air-conditioning the temperature was slightly below being comfortable. However, this is almost the exhaustive list of drawbacks we have seen there

The major asset of the place is the atmosphere and attitude of the staff (or actually the owners, who are running the riad). A special guy has accompanied us back to the car (the nearest parking place is on the main square some 10 min away) and took our bag back to the hotel. We were continuosly asked if everything is ok and whether we need anything more. As I understand there are not many rooms in the riad and the owners try to make the atmosphere close to the family/club one - they invite you to take the dinner together, the owner makes a little chit-chat with you and by the end of the stay you know almost everyone there by name.

Probably this is caused by a purely rational reason - the hotel is quite hard to locate on your own, so they really need to earn some sort of credentials to ensure the continious guest flow (I understand that the riad was opened only some 7 months ago). With all my scepticism about this method of marketing I would certainly recommend this place to stay.

The quoted price for a double-room with heating and bathroom was 60 EUR but you can probably bargain it down, especially if you stay several nights. They also have some more basic rooms for backpackers

All staff, except the owner, does not speak any English, so be prepared to learn some French words

I have nothing but good things to say about Riad Zahraa.

Situated inside the Medina, the Riad is very cosy and well decorated. In addition to the rooms the Riad offers some common spaces (including a terrace) which are perfect to relax and talk with the other guests.

The staff is the most valuable asset of the Riad! Everyone went out of their way to make me and my friends as confortable as possible.
