“A Fine Riad”
Reviewed 21 April 2008

Stayed two nights in this riad and found it pleasantly
located and interesting. The staff was pleasant and helpful
and we would gladly return -- but might try nearby Didi Palace for
a comparison -- it seems to be run by the same family and a bit
more upscale.

Reviewed 24 February 2006

The weather didn't help, I have to admit. Heavy rain, and the mud street of the Medina were all but washing away. It was also very cold - 10 degrees C. Made a reservation by email, only to be told on arrival that we were a day early (and I was holding their email reply confirming our arrival date as Monday 20th February). They claimed that because we were a day early, they couldn't give us the room they had planned for us; we saw all 3 rooms on the top (3rd) floor and there wasn't a lot to chose from any of them. Ours locked from the outside only, and the owner started off our stay by locking us in our room!! The room could not be locked from the inside, so we had to wedge it with an umbrella! Smell of sewage throughout the Riad, including our bedroom. other assorted smells that were mainly associated with dirt, and poor levels of cleaning. Add to that, when we arrived there was no water coming out of th hot taps in the shower or wash hand bowl. This was fixed quite quickly. We had to ask for soap in the room, and they seemed quite amazed that we needed it. The shower head fitting was broken, so we could only shower by holding the hose and shower head. The toilet didn't flush properly and the outlet leaked (!). The shower drain was blocked, so in the morning we had to stand in the cold dirty water from the night before. The only towel holder fell out of the wall. There was no wardrobe provided, i.e. no place to hang clothes - we draped them over the chairs.
We had planned to stay 2 or 3 nights, but left after just one night. Food was very disappointing. Service level poor. The owner (?) was quite surly, particularly when we decided to leave early. I'm not sure whether a better level of accommodation is available in Meknes, but I doubt it. Would suggest anyone planning a visit make it a day-trip from Rabat or Fes. This from two travellers who lived throughout N. Africa and the Middle East over 10 years from the mid 1970's - Egypt 2 years; Tunisia 1 year; Israel 1 year; Algeria 1 year; Libya 1 year. So we are accustomed to hardships. Don't go near the place.
