Arrived at Casablanca on the Thomson Dream cruise liner and opted to go on a tour of Rabat. Our tour guide appeared to be knowledgeable but we think that he was putting a gloss on things. On our way to Rabat we passed some dreadfully poor looking shanty towns where the people must live in real abject poverty only to be confronted with the cordoned off area in Rabat containing the Royal Palace. Our guide advised us that this was one of several palaces that the King had throughout Morroco. The buildings are very imposing and well laid out in amongst well tended gardens kept green with water continuously sprayed from hoses. One wonders however if the people living in the shanty towns have such ready access to clean water? However the only people going about the compound were parties of tourists. Other than men in uniform there were no local people to be seen so the area looked somewhat clinical and devoid of any real character.
