“Elegant atmosphere in excellent location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 October 2013 via mobile

My wife and I along with another couple had the distinct pleasure of staying 3 nights in this venerable old hotel. I was most impressed with the service and attention given to us and our various needs. We dined twice in the restaurants and had complimentary breakfast all three mornings. The waitstaff tended to our every request. They did whatever they could to make our dining experience memorable. The hotel staff were always ready to answer our questions, no matter how inane! There were literally 5 members of the hotel needed to aid us in securing our boarding passes. The server had gone down, and the printer malfunctioned. However, one person after another worked on the issues and resolved them within an hour! When my wife misplaced her sunglasses at breakfast, we informed the waitstaff and concierge. Within 20 minutes, the concierge called our room to let us know that they were found. The hotel itself, while old, was always being kept up with painting and cleaning in the halls and courtyard. Our room had a lovely, large balcony overlooking a beautiful pool area and 4 story fitness center. The room itself was spacious by European standards, clean, odor free. The shower was large enough with a solid stream of spray. Finally, we found the location to be ideal for walking to the Medina, the Kashbah, the grand Socco, and the petite Socco. The concierge was extremely helpful in securing guides if necessary to any of these sites. Overall, all four of us truly enjoyed our stay.

We booked this hotel online at the last minute upon recommendation from a Malaga tour guide. The check in and out was easy and friendly. All front area staff were helpful and friendly. The room nice and comfortable with turndown service. The included breakfast was great with fresh local fruits. (The best fig I have ever had!),meats cheeses, crepes and local dishes.
The negative stuff is the service in the bar/courtyard and at breakfast. The wait for service was long, the check took forever (in courtyard) and the breakfast service was very spotty and snooty.
This is an old grand hotel that was fun to stay in despite the food service stuff!

I travel regularly with my family to Tangier and the rest of Morocco and have stayed at this hotel on numerous occasions. This time round I travelled with my partner and 8 month old baby. Walking into the Minzah is like going home. The staff are extremely courteous and helpful, everyone from management to the junior bar staff. Whereas the property itself might appear somewhat tired in comparison to European standards the staff really make up for it. We normally book online to get the best deals. We only went for 4 days this time round but decided to stay an extra 3 nights and we were offered the same room at the same online rates.
CUSTOMS:
This is Morocco and people should bear it in mind. Wages are extremely low so tipping is an extremely good way to get that extra service and attention. When people travel to the USA you tip for absolutely everything so why not tip in a country where wages are low. I normally tip approx €10 on checking in and an additional €10-20 on my way out and believe me it goes a long way. In restaurants the average tip is between 50-100DH (€5-10).
FOOD:
If you dont like Moroccan food then the poolside restaurant and wine bar is for you. These two restaurants have a selection of international dishes including pastas etc. The main restaurant which opens at night has a very good selection of finger licking Moroccan dishes such as lamb tajine, lemon chicken, kebabs, cous cous etc. The main restaurant also has traditional moroccan musicians and belly dancers.
DRINKS:
Drinks are expensive so be warned!!! Can of Casablanca beer is 60DH (approx €6). Spirits are approx €12 a shot and bottle of mineral water at €5. Note that Moroccan wine is excellent! I would recommend a bottle of Medallion red. El Minzah has this bottle at 350DH but restaurants outside the hotel have it at approx €280DH.
MINIBAR:
There is a minibar in the room which is under lock and key and is opened for you on request and left open for the duration of your stay. Again be warned that drinks are very expensive.
ROOMS:
As in all hotels there are rooms of varying standards and I've tried them all. From your normal double which is clean and functional to the suites some of which enjoy beautiful views of the bay.
BREAKFAST:
In my opinion this is excellent, good quality and spread. I normally go for the moroccan pancakes with honey, streaky bacon and two fried eggs moroccan style (this is with loads of extra virgin olive oil). If there is something you want but dont see then ask for it as they will probably cook it for you.
ROOMSERVICE:
Ive requested breakfast to be brought up to our room when we've been tied up with the baby or felt just too lazy to go down. Quality has been as you would expect in the restaurant and they normally take approx 15-20 minutes to deliver.
EXCURSIONS:
The hotel can organise full or half day excursions to see Tangiers, Asilah, Tetuan and Chefchauen. These can be done as a group or with a private guide and car. There is a travel agency also beside the hotel so compare prices and haggle!
IN SUMMARY:
You would do well to realise that you are not in Europe or any western hotel or country. Tangier is definitely on the up and as a regular visitor you can see the changes that have and continue to take place. The King of Morocco is making sure that big investments are carried out in Tangier as it is the first city of North Africa as you step off Europe. Big investments are also being carried out in the building of a luxury marina and residential and hotel development just beside the current ferry port. The Moroccans are a proud people so compliment them on their service, country city etc and it will go a long way in making your stay all that more memorable.

Room Tip: When you check in I suggest that you ask to see the room first. If its to your liking then great if...

We stayed at El Minzah as part of a package deal from Gibraltar. The hotel was courteous, clean, comfortable and beautiful. The decor is a mix of modern amenities and traditional designs - a perfect blend. Everything went smoothly, the food was brilliant, the poolside not overcrowded, and the service excellent. The only downside was our bar bill as we left!
There is an on-site spa which is apparently excellent (I didn't try it, but we spoke to couples who had). The location is great as it is a short walk from the Medina and the port, as well as the modern side of the city.

I do not often write a review on hotels i have stayed in as i have never really felt compelled to do so. I read a number of reviews on here and thought that the good out weighed the bad, The good reviews are not a true reflection note this review to warn you. From staying here i do feel people should be warned this is not a 5 star hotel by any means and i have stayed in Morocco before so i know what to expect from a African 5 star hotel. The service was so poor it was unbelievable, Not once was i served at my table and continuously had to search for hotel staff to get a drink. The food is probably the worst i have ever eaten and i am very sure the Lamb is not Lamb and Beef really was not Beef.. I expected to pay over the odds for alcohol as it is a Muslim country but i would say you can find cheaper beer in Dubai the average beer price at the hotel is £8.00 for a local half beer. Leaving the hotel everything is a sell for the locals if your a westerner to the point its annoying, the guides just take you around their friends shops its relentless. The place is very dirty but it is a port town so not a main tourist attraction like the west coast of Morocco. If you go book into a smaller family run hotel you will be treated better and will not miss out as this hotel is truly no 5 star and is very dated and old.. On the plus side it has a pool and you can see the Sea....

An attractive property with good location, ocean views and pool area. A real buzz to see an Arabic hotel, especially this one with the photos around the public areas of the famous guests that have stayed.
A good room with an air conditioner battling to cope with the windows that don't quite close properly. Room had pen, matches, lotions etc provided but a locked mini bar and no supplied drinking water.
As part of a bus tour, I didn't expect the room with the ocean view, but I did expect the room to be made up when the room key was issued. I did expect the room key to actually open the door. But alas that didn't happen for me and several fellow travellers.
Restaurant meal, of chicken and cus cus, was poor for a bus group meal, wine was way overpriced as was for the Casablanca beer at €6 per small bottle. Our waiter seem reluctant to find change for the drinks bill and when confronted managed to sneak local coins into the change instead of the euro they were paid in.
Management does not seem to have a good grip on quality control. But I have nothing else in Tangier to compare this hotel with.

Read other reviews that spoke of the spaciousness of the bed rooms but ours was small and fairly basic. The public rooms, the bars and restaurants are spectacularly old fashioned and very pleasing and comfortable. We found the bar service a tad slow after our orders taken but enjoyed the plates of almonds, crisps and olives that were brought to our table. All staff encountered were very pleasant and polite. We ate one evening on the patio, a large open inner courtyard which has a French menu. They changed this to a Moroccan one at our request. I am not sure that we made the correct choice but enjoyed what we ate. Breakfast buffet excellent and eggs and crepes freshly cooked to order. The hotel has a large outdoor pool, plenty of loungers and a separate indoor wellness centre with another pool. Overall we enjoyed our long weekend at this delightful oasis a short 5 minute walk from the Medina.
