“Great service, fantastic roof terrace and atmosphere”
Reviewed 24 November 2013

We found La Tangerina on Tripadvisor earlier this year and decided to have a one night trip over to Tanger from Spain to spend one night in the old Medina. This turned out to be an excellent choice and a super spice to our 2w in Spain.

We are a familiy of 5, children age 8,11 and 13. When departing from Spain we took the speedboat from Tarifa bringing us directly into the old city where one easily can walk (uphill) to La Tangerina (estimate 25+ min). Unfortunately we made a "slight" detour into the modern city, but then saw a bit more than we would have otherwise.

Upon our arrival we were greeted by friendly staff who made sure to help us feel at home. We ordered in house food on the roof toop terrace that evening which turned out to be a great choice.

The best thing for us was that the hotel was on top of the hill in the Medina (in the corner) where it was quiet, yet you were already in the Medina and within 10 min you would be in the centre of the old Medina.

I must comment on the great roof terrace. This turned out much better than we thought from the photos. You really have a 360 view of Tanger and the Medina and Atlantic oceah from the top of the terrace. Sitting on the 2nd from the top terrace you have a magnificent view of the ocean which really bring peac to mind. The staff were very attentive and the waiter that we encountered the most and who served and excellent breakfast made our stay really pleasent.

I can indeed recommend La Tangerina to anyone who would like a small, friendly hotel in the old Medina with a superb roof terrace, easy access to the Medina, safe. We have three blond kids and did not see very many other tourist when we were there, no kids and was up front prepared for a bit of hustling. This turned out totally wrong. We were not hustled at all, things worked great, potentially because we might seem to know where we were going or that we were very clear that we did not want to be sold, or to view any special deals. The Medina itself was great with it's alleys and narrow streets. Not all easy to find your way through, but not that difficult either.

The small break in our vacation and stay at La Tangerina is something I can truly recommend. Enjoy a magical dinner at the roof terrace, soak in the atmosphere and the day after have a nice and lazy breakfast whilst looking out on to the atlantic and listen to the singing calling for prayer at the mosque. Truly great.

Room Tip: We had two rooms facing the ocean which worked fine. Might be some noise from the street below when...

We stayed here for one night in Room 5. We arrived early in the morning after a terrible overnight train ride from Marrakech. We were greeted by a nice gentlemen who called himself the "door man" (I did not get his name). Because we arrived so early, the owner was not there yet, but the door man lead us to the roof terrace and another nice gentlemen served us breakfast. The breakfast was delicious with home-made pastries, jam, juice, and mint tea. After breakfast, we met with the owner (did not get his name either), and he was so welcoming and helpful. We stayed in the junior suite, which was very spacious and comfortable. The riad in itself was also extremely charming and beautiful - amazing ocean views on the terrace!

The reason why I gave a lower rating is because of the customer service. We had a great experience at check-in, but after that, it went downhill. We spent a lot of time in the common area (the only area where wifi worked), and there were 2 women working who not once asked us if we needed anything or even gave us a smile or hello. They were busy chatting and gossiping with each other. When we inquired about where the nearest bank was or booking a taxi for the next morning, they acted like we were a burden interrupting their conversation. I expect such service at a posh hotel or big-chain, but not at a lovely riad where the point is to get to know the guests. It was not the experience we had at other riads in Morocco.

Overall, I really enjoyed the riad itself, and the owner and door man were great, but the ladies who worked there really needed to do their job and check in on their guests once in awhile. I was so disappointed because I really was looking forward to staying there after all the great reviews on TA!

Located within the Casbah and on the edge of the Medina, this is a really well-located hotel that is very nicely restored. Each room is unique -- I am in N-7. Very narrow with two twin beds and a scatter of antique furniture--a little cramped but very charming. Nice view of the Casbah rampart and the ocean. Got here and was ushered to the terrace for mint tea while my room was being readied. What a pleasant introduction to the hotel. Also had dinner, which was outstanding.

We stayed in Room 8 for one night. It was a little tricky booking - our email server blocked their emails. Once booked, everything was great. The location was awesome- right near the Kasbah. the room itself was nice- we were in the loft area, so a little tight for 2 people, but for one night this was FINE. Undoubtedly the best part of the hotel was the terrace and its spectacular view! And breakfast in the morning was delicious. We would stay here again.

Room Tip: Each room is different, so it might make sense to call and discuss your needs to the owners.

We spent one night in Tangier and stayed at La Tangerina. The hotel was fine with a roof top terrace that we enjoyed while having a nice dinner. The rooms were comfortable, clean and quiet. There was no lift which might be a problem for some people. Also, the location seemed a bit far from most things, but since we did not venture out after checking in that was not a problem. I do not like having to pay in advance for a room but since the rates were low it was not a huge problem. Overall, La Tangerina was the best part of Tangier. We did not enjoy the city and its hectic pace.

Easy booking on-line & website has 360 virtual tour, so you know exactly what you're getting. Excellent location, rooms were comfortable & clean. The terrace a great place to hang out in the evening and the perfect setting for the fantastic breakfast. Best of all was Farida and the rest of the staff - friendly and extremely helpful with taxis and questions about the city and the sights.

Room Tip: earplugs if you're a very light sleeper

The roof top terrace alone is worth the stay at La Tangerina! We (being 4 friends including myself) arrived at the hotel via cab (about 15 minutes from the bus station) and were warmly welcomed by the owners. Our room wasn't quite ready so we were given Moroccon mint tea and sweets on the rooftop terrace while we waited. The roof has a beautiful view of the Mediterranean and on a clear day you can see Spain. Once ready we settled into our rooms which felt like a scene out of Casablanca - beautiful rugs, old fashion radios, tiled furniture. We had dinner in the hotel twice and didn't regret it for a moment. The food is spectacular and the wait staff extremely friendly. Overall I would come back to this hotel in a heartbeat and have been recommending it tofriends. It's fabulous and well worth the VERY affordable price!

Things to note:
- If it's your first time hire a guide. We hired Sharif through the hotel and he was fabulous (and well worth the 30-40 euros we paid him per day).
- The hotel comes with breakfast. Take them up on it, the food is incredible. Also have dinner there if you can, well worth it.
- The beds are not the most comfortable but certainly not the worst I've slept on.
- They have birds in cages in the halls that are lovely but sing at the crack of dawn
- There is no elevator so you will have to climb stairs but there are only 4 floors
- The hotel only accepts PayPal and cash

Room Tip: - Room 6 has an incredible view of the Mediterranean.
