“A must stay if you are traveling to Dar es Salaam”
Reviewed 4 December 2012

The Slipway is a hidden gem along the Indian Ocean where grace seems to fall on each moment. The staff iwas attentive and helpful will all details of my planning - from travel to and from the airport and how to get around town. The compound offers many of the needs one would have from good food to cell phone services to a day spa.

The room was equipped will all the needs one could ask for from a comfortable bed equipped with the mosquito netting in a private setting overlooking the Indian Ocean.

This is my second time staying here - and recommend it to all traveling through.

The hotel is beautiful and clean, the staff is friendly and professional, the breakfast is delicious. The hotel is situated in a nice, quiet area with good restaurants, a playground and - important to mention - the ocean just outside the window! I can only give my best recommandations to this place.
On day two, the cleaners had not left as many towels in the bathroom as they took out. We called the reception and asked for more towels. After two minutes, warm towels were brought to our room. Very good service!
Only complain could be that the rooms are a bit small. But it's only a (minor) problem if you need to have a baby cot in the room as we did.

Room Tip: ask for seaview.

Spent 2 nights at the Slipway on the way to safari on Northern Circuit. The staff are incredibly welcoming and helpful. The room was well furnished and very clean with both air conditioning and a fan. The bed (with mosquito netting) was really comfortable; we also had a balcony overlooking the Indian Ocean (room 41) which they gave us when we asked for it. We were there in November and it was very quiet so plenty of room in the hotel. Breakfast was satisfactory and good value for the price. Price was excellent.

I would have preferred to have been in a hotel with a swimming pool as we needed to stretch and relax after long flights but I compromised because I had the impression that there was a beach and that we could swim in the sea. But this is not so (not a beach to walk on or an ocean to swim in) so that part was a bit disappointing. Lots of shops and restaurants around to fill your time though! Free internet too.

Dear Daffodilspring

Thank you for taking the time to review Hotel Slipway. We are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay.

When you return you will be able to stretch your legs by the pool. It is currently being built, and we expect completion by February 2013.

If this is not enough and you still long for a beach there actually is one. It is both good and bad news that it's a well kept secret. Few people know, few people go. The white, sandy beach is on Bongoyo island, a real tropical paradise, and about a 30-minute boat ride away. Now that you know don't spread the word!

We arrived tired after a long flight and found the hotel to be clean and professional, the staff courteous and helpful with a room where everything worked. In fact all we needed before moving on after one night.

We arrived a day earlier than our reservation after traveling over 24 hrs. We hoped they would happen to have a room. They were fully booked and it is now 10pm and we are exhausted!! The hotel staff was kind and compassionate and went out of their way to find another hotel for us. They welcomed us to sleep in their lobby until a room became available in the early am. We did find another hotel, but we were happy to get back to the Slipway the next day where we were warmly greeted and asked about our last nights stay. They showed us to our room and we were happy to see a lovely, clean and charming room overlooking the water with a small balacony.
The whole staff treated us like family and after going on a tour for a few days we returned and were warmly greeted back.

Room Tip: ask for a roomfacing the water

I had a room facing the village complex. Had a little kitchen area with Fridge. The bed was comfortable and slept well. Very clean. But no elevator have to use steps. The staff was very helpful and friendly.

My only issue was my key stopped working everyday. So always had to ask for a new key when arriving at hotel.

the hotel is located in a great entertainment complex. Nice places to eat and drink. Nice shops to purchase last minutes gifts. But can get a bit loud on weekends. But manageable.

The morning breakfast was simple but nice, with eggs and meat to order,

Internet is slow but manageable. WiFi free in lobby, but only CAT5 connection in the rooms.

I stay several weeks at a time in Dar, so find it great value in the region. Will be returning.

I loved this hotel - the view was so beautiful - I was facing the sea in a little studio apartment. The staff were friendly, the rooms were clean. Particular help from one of the lovely night receptionists - Rachel who ensured I was well cared for. Unfortunately, my experience was some what damaged as my last night due to noise.
My room was above the parking lot of the Slip way Mall - so it was very noisy on a good night - and required closing the window to shut out the horns, alarms and drunken screaming. On the final night however, the hotel had loaned the parking lot for a school function - and there was construction work the ENTIRE night - I did not sleep at all - due to noise the entire night - then early in the morning was woken from the few hours of sleep by LOUD speakers and music for the school function. Sadly the hotel compromised the comfort of its customers for some public function.

Bring your own adaptors they do not have any at reception.
No beach towels available so you should bring those too.

Room Tip: A Previous review suggests that the front rooms are smaller and have a great view, and the ones at t...

Dear Alexandra

Thank you for your review of Hotel Slipway. We certainly enjoy the first paragraph but are sorry to hear about the lost sleep. Here our comments:

As you experienced Slipway is a busy destination. Most hotel guests enjoy the lively environment and the fact that they can stroll, shop, wine & dine right at their doorstep.

Sometimes, however, lively environments can have unwanted side effects. This being said, what you witnessed on your last night was clearly beyond the tolerable and accepting such an event in the first place was not the right thing to do. The lesson has been learnt.

Since the liveliness is part of Slipway's concept we will not try to prevent it but will take measures that allow peace in the rooms and a lively outdoor to coexist. We therefore feel confident that you will enjoy your next stay with us for the following reasons:

1. Rooms are being soundproofed. The lower parking (where the event was held) will be closed and turned into a tropical garden. These measures combined should eliminate any disturbance to hotel guests while allowing Slipway to maintain its vibrant character.
2. The hotel is adding facilities, most notably a swimming pool and a gym. We are also adding shops that will further increase Slipway's attractiveness to the traveler.
3. Being right by the ocean we will engage marine operators to provide cruises, trips to the nearby islands and diving & fishing activities for those interested. These should add value to the hotel and to the destination Slipway.

We hope your next review will start like the last one but end right there: 'I loved this hotel.'

Your Hotel Slipway team.
