“Cheap and basic, but good location!”
Reviewed 23 August 2012

I stayed here for 1 night during my stay in Dar. It was very basic. The sheets were clean and so was the bathroom. The shower was poor and there was no hot water. The staff weren't very friendly. The hotel is in a good location. There's internet cafes, banks and restaurants nearby. There's a taxi rank right outside. Cheap to get to the bus station/ferry/airport. Expect to be woke up every morning at 5.30 by the mosque next door!

Econo was a good place to stay for those on a budget. It is close to banks, shops and restaurants. There are always taxis out front so getting away is no problem. The room was a good size and had a small balcony. I only spent 1 night as I was on my way to other parts of the country. If back in Dar I would not hesitate to stay at Econo.
Breakfast is included with your stay. Coffee/tea, toast, jam, fruit

This place is cheap and basic, so it is good if that's what you are looking for - but don't expect anything but the minimum (a basic bed with sheets).

I stayed at EconoLodge for more than three weeks and never considered changing the hotel (although I changed my room, moving into an air-conditioned room after the initial two very hot nights). The rooms were surprisingly spacious and very clean. All the essentials were there (especially a hot shower and a toilet, and moskito netting at the windows); some useful extras were missing (for example WiFi), and there was neither a TV nor a fridge in the room. But at a price of less than 15 Euros for a non-air-conditioned room you can't expect that.
The staff at the reception were very helpful and reliable (you can leave your valuables with them without any worries), and so were the cleaning ladies.
There were only two minor drawbacks: First, breakfast is a rather depressing affair (a bleak room combined with poor food and a rather joyless waitress); and second, the surroundings of the hotel are not particularly pleasant. The narrow, unpaved, unlit street leading to the hotel feels a bit awkward, especially in the darkness (but I never felt scared), and it can get noisy from very early in the morning; on the other hand, the location is not bad at all, as there are several decent restaurants and internet cafes nearby, and the city centre with its not too many attractions is within easy walking distance.
So, if you don't need the amenities the up-market hotels offer and if you don't want to spend per night what the average Tanzanian earns per month, go for EconoLodge as a decent option in downtown Dar.

If you want to have a nice stay in Dar spend at least 80$ for a double room. (Think Holiday Inn, Sophia House or Rainbow Hotel is quite nice).

We didn't had that money. In Libya Street (Everything in walking distance) are three budget hotels:
- Econo Lodge
- Safari Inn
- Jambo Inn

We have checked all three of them and we stayed there because Econo Lodge was much better value for money than Jambo Inn (No space in the rooms, double price, charged in $ not in TSH, which is bad for you because of the exchange rate, breakfast not eatable, NO WARM WATER - Even the promised a lot of time). We did not stay at Safari Inn because they do not offer 3 bed rooms.

Overall: Econo Lodge is not good, but it is the best you can get on budget in Dar.
The bathrooms are not very nice, but big. Also the rooms a big. The AC works properly. The towels are old.
The sell water and soft drinks or reasonable prices.

Go there if you want to safe money, go somewhere much more expensive if you want to have a nice stay.

Food recs:
- Jambo Inn for Indian
- New Africa Hotel has a bar with burgers and a real nice restaurant (about 5-8 € for excellent meals)

We three had a nice stay. Working shower. Few to no mosquitos. Nothing fancy. But friendlier and cleaner than I had expected from coming into the area, and first glances at the hotel. Simple breakfast included. Low rates made our trip sustainable. We stayed in a very simple three bed triple. Ferry to Zanzibar 5-10 minute walk away.

We chose Econolodge b/c of the reviews on Trip Advisor. We were looking for a place to stay the first night we arrived in Tanzania for our honeymoon. On the good side, it was dirt cheap. It was hands down the cheapest place we stayed for our entire 3 week trip – even cheaper than the public campsites on our safari. There ends the good side. At first, we thought EL was clean enough for what we were paying, but then as we went in and out for the night (finding dinner, going for a walk, etc.), each time we came back and flipped on the lights, baby cockroaches would scatter back to their hiding spots. We even found some running off the beds. We ended up sleeping w/ the bright fluorescent lights on b/c it was too late in the evening to change the room, and that was the only way we could figure to keep the cockroaches in their hiding place during the night. The room was also had ant issues. One of my bags ended up getting infested w/ ants. Thankfully, it wasn’t my pack! The location is also not as central as folks make it out to be. It’s not super close to the ferry if you’re thinking you can easily walk with your heavy pack to catch the ferry to Zanzibar. As a side note, there was a sign at the check-in counter that said no one w/ “immoral turpitude” was allowed in the hotel. When we asked what that meant, the staffer indicated it didn’t apply to us b/c we are a married couple, but that they’d had problems w/ prostitution in the past. Overall, it was an unpleasant stay. You may be paying hardly anything to stay, but you’re getting what you’re paying for. We were supposed to stay another 2 nights at Econolodge as we made our way to various points in Dar (return from safari, ferry to Zanzibar, etc.). Instead, we avoided Dar and Econolodge all together.
