I am Tanzanian who have lived in Dar and also been in western countries. I have been to this market many times to even count. This is local market which is frequented by most local people. This can be very annoying place for a westerner. It is chaotic, overwhelming, hot, muddy, dusty, smelly you name it.It is full of life but also full of bargains. It is very hard to navigate this place if you are not accompanied with a local person who knows this area very well. Avoid vipanya(public buses) and give yourself a huge favor and take a cab.Wear sensible shoes(sneakers or resilient ballet flats), wear light and comfortable clothes, leave all jewelries and electronics at home/hotel.Eat and carry a lot of water before you come to this place as you will need energy to walk around here.Bargain,Bargain Bargain.I will not spend the whole day here though as Dar has more things to see.

Kariakoo market can be overwhelming for a westerner. Hundreds and hundreds of sellers hawking everything from produce to clothing (new and used) cramped together in the most disorganized way. It's loud and noisy. The sounds of selling and bargaining and horns honking. And the air is thick with sweat, the consistent smell of something being burned and the dusty ness of dar es salaam is prevalent. The walk is difficult..swerving among the people, negotiating the rocks and rugged terrain, one spends more time looking down to avoid tripping over the humanity of it all. It is a market for Africans and you are better off if you're accompanied by one. It's unrestrained capitalism totally swahili style.

Chaotic setting in dated concrete multistory building. A fantastic place to get something you need but don't go to see a typical Tanzanian market because this is not one of those.

A filthy, chaotic and smelly place. An waste of time, we should have done something else.
Only go if you want to see how the poorest of Tanzanians live.

If you are into walking in rubbish, then go there! It is a dirty, disorganized, stinky place...but very entertaining and quite an experience! As far as markets on an African scale is concerned, the variety is good. Being a Westerner, you 'must just pay'...a rip-off!
