“Cabins are cool but Campsites are not...”
Reviewed 13 February 2014

For reference, I'm a 30yr old female, travelled solo to meet a group tour and stayed here for 1 night on 21st Dec in a cabin then 1 night on the campgrounds on 25th Dec.
I paid $70AUD for the cabin through my agent. .

Because I was able to experience both types of accommodation Kipepeo had to offer, my overall rating is an average derived from the "good stay in the cabin" weighted down by the "poor amenities on the campground".

To get from DAR Airport it takes approximately 1 hour - this means:
- A cab from airport to ferry terminal (~30mins)
- Wait in line for the ferry (queuing can take 10mins-40mins depending on peak hour and locals wanting to get home!)
- Get on the ferry with the cab
- 5 min ferry ride across a ~100m body of water
- Another 20mins to the campsite (?) from memory.

I had a pre-booked transfer which I paid an exorbitant $65AUD for. Do not pay anywhere near this if you are traveling with unbooked local taxis. (I paid equivalent 94000TZS = NUTS!)

The reception guy and wait staff speak English but the grounds staff (who show you to your cabin) do not.
The campground is set right on the beach with a bar, restaurant and TV area.
The cabins are set among gardens ~50m inland accessible by small tracks

Pros:
- Extra points for the novelty factor in the cabin design: the ground floor is a wardrobe/bathroom
and the very steep stairs lead up to the sleeping quarters of double mattresses with mosquito netting and balcony (with chairs, table and hammock).
- Alcoholic drinks were a bit cheaper compared to main DAR city and Zanzibar - ~2000-5500TZS which is ~$2-4AUD *Local beer is cheap eg Kilimanjaro

Cons:
- The beach is not fantastic for swimming with floating seaweed & washed ashore (may depend on the season/tide)
- Restaurant food is not fantastic eg grilled chicken, chips and coleslaw ($6AUD)
- The bathroom is quite dark even with the light on and the shower head/pressure is not fantastic with no guarantee of hot water, however it will be lukewarm from the daytime heat anyway, so don't worry too much (it is Africa).
-The showers at the campground are worse eg water doesn't drain properly, nozzle is multi-directional, shower curtain does nothing, nowhere to hang things etc.
-The campground toilets were quite bad (& thinking back, one of the worst throughout my 5wks camping in 6 countries across Africa)

My campground tip: face your tent windows to the beach so you get a nice breeze at night
Also: when hanging your clothes to dry overnight by the beach, always use a peg because they'll be blown away by the morning.

Travel safe!

We spent one night in this camp and really enjoyed the originality of the room. it looks like a tree house. the bathroom is downstairs and the bed is upstairs with a great balcony and privacy. this hotel is located on the beach. Simple but clean.

I have previously camped here, but this time stayed in a double story, traditional-inspired banda. They are quite charming. Reasonably steep stairs to the bedroom and balcony with table and chairs and hammock. Unfortunately these are away from the beach, so there is no beach view, but the forest is peaceful.
Bed - large bed (a couple of large mattresses pushed together) on a platform. Comfortable. Simple linen (hot all year round so no doona).
Bathroom - basic but good hot water and pressure
Lighting - very dim
Powerpoints - only one socket down stairs, and ours didn't work
Mozzies - not mozzie-proof, but good mozzie net over the bed
Heating / cooling - no fan, so quite still and I imagine uncomfortable in the summer

Beach - lovely, but didn't swim
Food - service is a bit slow; food average (for Tanzania)
Other - pergolas and under cover areas (one with power sockets and TV) to use and enjoy the atmosphere and have a drink slightly away from the bar

The rooms were a pleasant surprise though lugging bags up to your bedroom area is a slight chore. The rooms-huts were double story and the doors opened to a wonderful balcony though i had no real beach view you could hear it. The only electric socket was down stairs for charging in a cupboard and the bathroom was there too. Excellent water pressure and hot too. All very clean but lots of mozzies and a few gekkos around to catch them! The grounds had mongeese running around and there were arm guards. the beach was lovely as was the bar, didnt eat here though. The net was availble and a little patchy , staff that i encountered were lovely esp the young bar keep though the owner seemed a little distant.

we have visited this place countless times, the most recent one being just last weekend. Erna & Dale, the couple that manages this place and their staff are extremely friendly and welcoming. We like to come here to get away from the chaotic city life. The food is excellent every time.

Just remember to bring a mosquito repelent...

if you just want the beach, good food & some rest, this is the place. We highly recommend Kipepeo Beach.

We stayed in the bandas by the beach for one night, which was fine. They have a shared bathroom so it's just one step up from camping. The bed was comfortable and it had a decent mosquito net but there were some bitey insects around.

The food was average and a bit pricey but otherwise ok. Service was disinterested and a bit slow.

The beach is nice. There is some rubbish around but that's to be expected at a beach so close to the city centre. There are nicer beaches on Zanzibar but if you don't have time the water here is turquoise and great for swimming.

Room Tip: There are cheap bandas by the beach or you can pay four times the price for your own cabin with a ba...

I stayed two nights at Kipepeo, pretty good facilities, and I enjoyed the food, although a bit pricy compared to other places I visited. I liked the free wifi, a treat! I was shocked that the water was so warm off the coast of Dar. If I went back to Dar, I would consider staying again here.
