this is a great place to get under the skin of the local fishermen and customers, who use their voices unshyly to agree on prices. The smells and heat can be an unpleasant combination, but all in all it was a great experience and if you dare - try some of the food they are cooking at the site.

i am from China so such kind of wet market is not new to me. but still, it worths a visit so as to see the real lives of local people.
guide book told us that it's not a safe place and not to bring any valuables. luckily we and our cameras survived the visit.

Coming from Europe or US you are sure that you have never seen something like that. We were the only foreigners when we visited. It has very strong smell. It is relatively organized. Closed shoes are must.(no flip-flop or sandals) It is difficult to take pictures of the stands since there are peoples around. You have to ask all if they allow you. . But sure that it is a unique experience in Dar. The view to the harbor is very nice.
The shops on the other side of the street no interest. 10 sea shells should not cost more than 10.000 Tanzanian shilling.
If you stop in front of one shop you have to stop visiting since everybody calls you to sell something. After the shops there is a smoking and boiling building but we could not visit since the kids stopped for the sea shells.

There is nothing touristy about this real "day-in-the-life" market. This is a raw, true exposure to Dar life and should not be missed to appreciate how daily life works.

I have to say, I had a blast here. Let me start by saying, this is the type of experience you would see on "No Reservations". If you are made uncomfortable by crowds, yelling, bad smells at times, and envoloping clouds of grease and smoke in certain locations - this is not for you. If the idea of walking through the market, procuring your own fish, prawns, squid, etc. and then taking it over to the kitchen area, where locals working huge vats of oil heated by open wood fires fry it fresh for you - you will be entertained and delighted. Remeber that the standard negotiations and underhand behavior is to be expected while making deals. Don't get mad, it's Africa, let the experience wash over you, enjoy your fresh seafood, grab a beer down the street (no drinking in the market), and let the day take you where it does. Plenty of guides will be waiting to assist you if you're not ready to tackle this on your own, and don't mind the companionship and the impending settling of debts - as friends of course.
