Travelled here on business and I read the reviews before I went, the room I had was overlooking the pool, so no problem with the church.
The room was absolutely fine and the food excellent, very high quality. Bar is comfortable, but very busy on Friday night with a local band, Didn't try the casino.
There is a trend for the staff to set the aircon low -so the room can be quite cold on returning, but that's hardly a complaint. Would definitely stay here again.
I did venture outside for a walk on Saturday afternoon, but was approached by many people trying to sell their "art" they were polite but persistent, until it becomes irritating so gave up, therefore you end up feeling a bit trapped.
I would be interested to try somewhere else for the experience, knowing this is an excellent fall back.
My colleague had a room overlooking the harbour and church and told me he was woken by loud singing, so the review are correct I thought.
On the second week I moved to a room overlooking the harbour (room also good) - great view past the church - to explain the church tower is taller than the hotel !!
This is not some local gathering of a few people there are at least 100 cars - EVERY morning at 5.45/6.00 until 7:15 a rock concert moves in - electric guitars, drums, trumpets. The music and singing I could probably cope with/or get used to, but the constant chorus of beeping, wailing car alarms set off by the vibration of the music might give you an idea of the volume !!, turning up the TV does not help, only earphones and MP3 player will do it.
Accept it for what it is because you can't move the hotel or the church - there is a great view from the Thai restaurant (also very good food) so settle for that and take a room at the back - or go join in at the church maybe :-)
WiFi was fine in the first room, but useless with the second, however you can get a cable from reception which works fine. You have to pay for internet access and can get a week ticket at the equivalent of 5 x 24hr charges. I still think internet access should be free like in the USA. Hopefully It will go the way of phones soon, which Hotels used to also charge a lot for until we all got mobiles.
