“Good room, Good food, Good staff - Take the view from the roof not the room !!”
Reviewed 2 October 2011

Travelled here on business and I read the reviews before I went, the room I had was overlooking the pool, so no problem with the church.
The room was absolutely fine and the food excellent, very high quality. Bar is comfortable, but very busy on Friday night with a local band, Didn't try the casino.
There is a trend for the staff to set the aircon low -so the room can be quite cold on returning, but that's hardly a complaint. Would definitely stay here again.
I did venture outside for a walk on Saturday afternoon, but was approached by many people trying to sell their "art" they were polite but persistent, until it becomes irritating so gave up, therefore you end up feeling a bit trapped.
I would be interested to try somewhere else for the experience, knowing this is an excellent fall back.
My colleague had a room overlooking the harbour and church and told me he was woken by loud singing, so the review are correct I thought.
On the second week I moved to a room overlooking the harbour (room also good) - great view past the church - to explain the church tower is taller than the hotel !!
This is not some local gathering of a few people there are at least 100 cars - EVERY morning at 5.45/6.00 until 7:15 a rock concert moves in - electric guitars, drums, trumpets. The music and singing I could probably cope with/or get used to, but the constant chorus of beeping, wailing car alarms set off by the vibration of the music might give you an idea of the volume !!, turning up the TV does not help, only earphones and MP3 player will do it.
Accept it for what it is because you can't move the hotel or the church - there is a great view from the Thai restaurant (also very good food) so settle for that and take a room at the back - or go join in at the church maybe :-)
WiFi was fine in the first room, but useless with the second, however you can get a cable from reception which works fine. You have to pay for internet access and can get a week ticket at the equivalent of 5 x 24hr charges. I still think internet access should be free like in the USA. Hopefully It will go the way of phones soon, which Hotels used to also charge a lot for until we all got mobiles.

Room Tip: Definitely the back !!!!

Dear Tripadvisor member,

Thank you for taking time to post a review of the hotel.

Its great to note that you were satisfied with your stay overall. I am glad that you enjoyed the facilities of the hotel. Your special mention of the high quality of the food and beverage has been noted and shall be shared with the kitchen team. I am sure that they will be very enthused with this feedback. Apologies for the disturbance due to the church festivities. They have been having some special choir sessions over the last week due to the harvest season. We have had a dialogue with them and they have toned things down quite a bit. Eitherways these celebrations are concluding this week. Hope this wont mar your impression of the hotel and I do hope that you stay with us on your next visit to Dar es Salaam.

Thank you and regards,
Shanker Narayanan

Stayed three times in this hotel and would gladly recommend it to my colleagues and others. I am pretty positive with the hotel staff's hospitality and service. Also, nice to hear the organ and choir from the adjacent Lutheran Chapel in the morning. The sea view is fabulous. Liked the Bar, Cassino and the Bandari grill. There is warmth and hospitality that is ubiquitious in this hotel.

Room Tip: Choose rooms with the sea view.

I stayed one night at New Africa in Dar es Salaam when the flight was cancelled and it was quite a pleasant experience, save from a couple of things.
The room was clean and very nicely decorated and the bed was comfortable. But I would recommend to ask for a room facing the pool area, as I was awakened by some kind of a mass in the church across the street. “In” is actually not even the correct word, as the band was standing on the staircase by the entrance. And it didn’t even end with that, because as it was a Sunday, the weddings continued all day, one after another. Even though the window was closed, I could hear the music as clearly as if they were standing in the room.
Nice if you can get away from it – annoying if you can’t.
Another thing that prevented the stay from being perfect was the fact that the staff might need some training in customer care. They were ok, but not overly friendly if I put it that way.

Dear Tripadvisor member,

At the outset I would like to thank you for taking the time to write a review of the hotel. Its nice to note that you enjoyed the stay at the hotel overall. Apologies for the disturbance on account of music from the church. The Lutheran church is quite a lovely setting and provides a nice look out from the room. However at times, there are some special choirs and occasions. They do host some weddings, on and off. It just happenned that there were a few during your stay at the hotel. Whilst we enjoy good relations with the Church authorities and they are extremely considerate with their events and try and be as unobtrusive to the hotel guests as possible, sometimes they do end up causing a little discomfort. Some guests have commented on the same in the past. Mostly positives but at times negative. The hotel unfortunately does not have complete jurisdiction on the Church events and thus are helpless at times and are at times even caught off guard. However we do maintain constant dialogue with the authorities in order to ensure that both our services are not disrupted at any instance. I can only apologize for the inconvenience caused on account of the same. Hopefully you would return to the hotel on your future visit to Dar and we could assign a pool facing room for you.

Warm regards,
Shanker Narayanan

Cannot fault the hotel at all! Arriving at reception I was blown away, lovely entrance with extremely friendly door staff. First thing I saw was the cake counter so first impressions couldn't be better! Checked in with no problems and taken to my room (pool facing). Very nice room, fairly big, nice bathroom with bath. Sealed bottles of water everyday. Mini bar almost same prices as bar and restaurants. Tv had news and film channels. Bandai restaurant superb. Lovely choice of food, I would recommend the steak with jacket potato! This is where breakfast is served too! Lovely choice of cereals, fruit, full English, breads, etc. The man who plays the piano during breakfast is divinei! Pool is lovely, very quiet. Didn't use the gym, but the spa is heaven. Had a manicure, pedicure and sweedish massage by Rose. Definately recommend! Went to Swasadee twice and its just breath taking! The views of the harbour are spectacular! Food is spectacular! Cheaper than Bandai too :) reception staffs are just the best. Felt like friends I had known for years. Every evening when i came back to the hotel they would ask about my day and check if i was okay. also, celebrated my 20th birthday here. Not only did a lovely.woman, Karen, help us organise a trip to Zanzibar, but when I go back they had delivered a big personalised chocolate cake, fruit basket and wine to my room. Did a big celebration in reception and shared out all the cake. Made my birthday truely unforgettable! Cannot thank them enough! Wonderful, wonderful experience! Would go back tomorrow if I could! Would recommend this hotel to anyone! I was a solo traveller and I felt at home completely! Book now!!

I am visiting Dar es Salaam for business and find the hotel well run, well organized, and the decoration new and pleasant. My room has a nice view down over the Lutheran Church and out on the harbor. It's very well located for business in Dar. They are expanding, though I wonder whether this will lead to some overcapacity. The breakfast buffets are very good, and the Thai restaurant on the top floor has a nice view over the harbor at night. I sampled only one dish but the food was good, and reasonably priced. The rack rate on this hotel is way too high, as is typical for Dar es Salaam hotels. If you can get a discount it's a good bet. One complaint: the wireless works in the lobby and upstairs bar, but is inefficient everywhere else, so they use cables for internet. Due to interference from other systems, hey are planning to turn off the wireless and go completely wired--bad decision, IMHO.

Dear Tripadvisor member,

Thank you for taking the time to post the lovely review. We are glad that the hotel met your expectations largely. Your compliments on the hotels food and beverage has been noted. I shall share the same with the team and am sure that they will be highly motivated post hearing the feedback. Your comments on the wireless internet being unreliable have been noted. We have had issues in certain sections of the hotel with regards to WIFI. As pointed out by you, there is also a lot of interference from hotspots and wireless networks of the various neighbouring buildings. We have already provided wired internet in all rooms. However we need to ensure that the wireless is also equally reliable. We are currently working on a Wimax solution and this should ensure reliability of the wireless signal. We will not be discontinuing the wireless service at any point as pointed out by you, in your review. Apologies for the inconvenience caused on account of the internet. Hopefully you would have an uneventful browsing experience during your next visit to Dar.

Warm regards,
Shanker Narayanan
