Stayed here on a short overnight transit stop.It is convenient for the airport if the traffic is light (15-20 mins). In heavy traffic it took a good hour.
The hotel is large and impressive and all you would expect from a Serena hotel.
We found the food good but the service slow with the staff having difficulty grasping how and when we wanted our drinks and food, but we got there in the end !
The rooms very very smart, comfortable and functional.
Although the hotel is city located it is very secure and set back in its own grounds.
We left early before breakfast started. Although we payed a B&B rate there was no alternative to grab a coffee or pastry etc for an early check out. The reception staff were very efficient.
I would recommend it for the luxury end for a stop over.

The other reviewers are accurate when they say this hotel is getting dated and a bit worn. It's not just the old hairdryers. The carpets are fraying and ripping. The lighting is very old and leave the rooms darker than they should be. But it has a homey feel. The rooms are large and have all the features of an international hotel. The beds and pillows are comfortable, the rooms are clean, the internet is reliable although it often needs to be reconnected. The showerhead is very good and strong. The mini fridge has a good selection but is way overpriced. The location is excellent, within walking distance of the ocean, downtown and the harbor.

Service throughout the hotel is very friendly and good, even if the wait staff want to take your food away before you have finished it. They are overeager to help. The Jahazy Restaurant is one of the best hotel restaurants in Africa. Joyce is an incredible chef. It is expensive but worth it. The buffet restaurant (Serengeti) is typical of buffets: big selection but not that great. The poolside restaurant is a nice alternative for light meals.

The pool area is very pleasant. The business center is helpful but also overpriced. The fitness center is quite good and never crowded. The gift shop has an excellent selection of inexpensive crafts and a few sundries, but next to no food and no drinks at all. Given the minibar prices, it's too bad there isn't a nearby convenience store. The onsite doctor and dentist are nice extras.

While not as flashy and modern as the Hyatt, the Serena is still a good choice. It feels like they care about their guests even if this isn't as luxurious as many of the Serena park lodges. With 235 rooms, it is not so large as to be impersonal. It is much more of a business hotel than a tourist hotel.

Room Tip: One side faces the street and the other faces the pool and the ocean.

I stayed at this hotel for 8 nights. The hotel was very clean. On arrival from a long and hot drive from the air port in a cab with faulty ac, the cool blast of the lobby cool air was welcoming .The first 4 nights i had a room facing the city I thought the room was going to be a little bigger then it was but it was nice. My room was clean and a spacious bathroom with really good water pressure . The hotel staff was GREAT, every staff member that I ran into they greeted me even down to the cleaning ladies as I was waiting for the elevator . I would also give an extra star for the Bellhop he greeted me and chatted while i was waiting for my car, suggested a few restaurants.
The breakfast buffet was oh so boring ... it was the same spread over and over day after day i dreaded the breakfast after the second morning and settled for tea and toast. The waiters there seemed well trained and attentive .
I would give an extra star for the reception , ... friendly and flexible. High points to Patricia..The entire staff was warm, friendly and accommodating, going well above and beyond the level of service I've ever experienced from a hotel staff.

Room Tip: ask for rooms facing the gardens... the city rooms faces west and the setting sun blasts strong and...

This is not a bad hotel. I have stayed there twice. It is well situated in the heart of town with easy access to most places of business. However it is in need of a revamp as it is a bit dated. The staff are friendly and helpful. There's a car rental service just by the reception which makes getting around easy. The rooms are spacious, but the bathrooms could do with an update. In all, it wasn't a bad experience at all, but it could be better. What I loved most were the buffet nights. There was so much fresh seafood on offer, and for a seafood lover like me, that makes up for a lot of things.

Check in is at 12, we tried to check in at 20 minutes past, but the room wasn't ready yet.

We were escorted to the executive lounge located at the 7th floor where we had to wait until the room was ready. At 14.10 we lost our patience and went back to the reception where our room "just" got ready as we talked to the receptionist. The room was nice, clean, and the cleaning staff was very friendly.

We spend the day at the pool which is well kept, the pool bar is well stocked and reasonably priced, even though the bar tender seemed to lack a bit in skill. The sea food restaurant was very good, and the waiting staff was excellent.

At the 10 o'clock check out everything was flawless and we went back to the pool to relax for a few hours before heading to our next stay. At 12.30 a staff member showed up and told us to pay 20000 shillings if we wanted to stay at the pool after 1300. The day before a lot of our colleagues had checked out and didn't have to pay this fee. When challenged with this information he said that it was a mistake and asked us to leave. An annoying end to an otherwise nice visit.

Dear Mathias,

Thank you for taking time to give us your feedback. We have noted with great concern on how you were treated at the swimming pool after you had checked-out. I would like to assure you that this is not the norm and we have used your incident as a learning curve and retrained all our staff at the Poolside - please accept our sincere apologies for this negative experience.

Once again, thank you for your feedback and we look forward to hosting you again.

Having stayed at Serena Nairobi, Mombasa, Kampala, Elementeita, Amboseli and Mountain Lodge, Serena Dar-es-Salaam was a let down.

The hotel feels old and worn. Check in took for ever and the staff were not very engaging.

I was upgraded to a Superior room on the 4th floor. Had ocean glimpses from the window. The room was worn, stained and dated. The carpet needs replacing, no data or power centre, and lighting was inadequate. Storage was plenty, but the hangers are the ones you can't steal, which are really annoying to use.

The bathroom is small, but has a great shower.

Service overall does not seem refined, or genuine. Staff seem to be struggling to deliver, understand guest needs, and serve.

Breakfast was very ordinary. I had a cracked coffee pot, cutlery was not polished, and the food choices / quality was average. Fruit was not sweet, and coffee was bitter.

For a bed for the night, it is acceptable for a night or two.

Excellent location for business travellers with easy access to the city. I would not opt for this hotel if I was on holiday .

Rooms are spacious and clean with all the usual. The old fashioned hair dryer in the bathroom is a bit dated.

Bar and restaurant service is extremely slow. You wait to be served and wait even longer to get your order (we waited over an hour for a meal). There does not seem to be enough tables in the restaurant for breakfast to cope with such a large hotel. This service has affected my overall rating of what is otherwise an above average hotel.

The staff in the foyer are particularly helpful arranging taxis where necessary etc.

I would have liked to have the option to open my room window but the handle was missing.

Would stay again for a business trip.

Room Tip: Request a room with a view towards the sea.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback.

We pride ourselves in offering high standards service in our food and beverage outlets but clearly we failed to meet your expectations on this occasion and rest assured that we will institute necessary remedial measures to avoid a recurrence of the same.

With regards to opening the windows of your room, for safety reasons we usually keep them shut and only open them upon request.

I would like to sincerely thank you again for your comments and we look forward to hosting you again.
