“I would recommend this hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2014

I stayed at this hotel because of it's close proximity to the stock exchange. The rooms are spotless, the staff are very friendly and helpful. Perhaps the check in process could be slightly streamlined but overall a great hotel.

It is a centrally located hotel in Dar es Salaam. The staff is warm and cooperative. They have a nice spread of breakfast buffet (overlooking the garden). Lobby is very comfortable for business meetings and has good WiFi access. Rooms are decent and overlook the front road, back road (which should be avoided) and the garden-cum-pool area. They also have complementary shoe shining service - and there is a unique chair at the hotel entrance if you have some extra time ahead of your meeting to enjoy the service. Overall a nice place to stay.

However, a few negatives to highlight:
(a) house keeping is not efficient you need to call them a few times to get what you need - e.g. I had to call them thrice to get drinking water while struggling with a soar throat;
(b) No shaving or brush kit or nail cutter offered in the room; and
(c) internet connectivity in certain areas of the room is poor.

From a pricing perspective (which is comparable to taj exotica), I find it expensive, but so are other things in Tanzania.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking time to give us feedback about your stay with us. We are delighted to note that you enjoyed your stay with us. However, we have also taken note of the areas of shortfall and rest assured that they received our full attention and have all been addressed.

We have since reviewed our housekeeping standard operating procedures to ensure that all rooms amenities such as water, toiletries etc are well stocked and also incase a guest calls, we now have a dedicated person attending to all guestroom issues promptly.

With regards to internet connectivity, we have recently installed in-room ruckus devices in all the rooms and this has resolved all the connectivity issues that we had before.

Thank you again for your review and we look forward to hosting you again soon!

Sincerely

I stayed there for 3 nights in a business trip. The superior rooms are excellent, specious and very well equipped. The free Wi-Fi is good and fast. Service is implacable friendly and very helpful. The restaurants are good and the lobby and the terrace near the bar are very convenient for meetings. The location of the hotel is convenient if one has meetings in the business center of Dar. Indeed Recommended.

The Serena was every bit as lovely as it looks. Everyone is friendly and super helpful and the breakfasts are spectacular...can't think of anywhere I have been that does breakfasts better!
Only criticism is that when we arrived and were shown to our room on the executive floor, we were shown the executive lounge and told we were free to enter all day and the small selection of food was complimentary, along with hot drinks throughout the day and complimentary alcoholic beverages in the early evening until 8.30. We put all our luggage away, went to have dinner and thought we'd come back to enjoy a nice coffee and some sweets in the executive lounge but it was 7.50 and everything was packed away. So instead we ordered some room service and craving something sweet I ordered a chocolate milkshake. Upon checking out, we found that the milkshake had cost $15 USD and it hadn't even been very nice...

The hotel is lovely and I'd come again, but really...$15....and if we are told the executive lounge is open til 8.30, and it even says it in the information brochure ...it would be nice if it was actually true.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Executive Suite with an Ocean view. Beautiful view from the window up on the 7th fl...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking time to review our hotel.

We are happy to note that you had a pleasant stay with us and your compliments on the breakfast offer have been passed to the Chef.

The Executive Lounge is usually open until 2030hrs daily and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. We have since instituted remedial measures and the operating hours are now being strictly adhered to!

With regards to the Milkshake prices, I agree with you that US$ 15.00 was on the higher side and we have since reviewed the prince to US$ 7.50 (depending on exchange rates) and also improved on the quality. Thank you for pointing this out to us!

Once again, thank you for your comments and we look forward to hosting you again.

Sincerely

Overall I was very happy with the Serena-- it has all the amenities you would expect from a 5-star hotel - a lovely pool, gym, bar, restaurant, cafe, extensive buffet breakfast, business center, salon, money exchange, travel service, etc right on site. Compare to other large hotels I visited (eg Hyatt), the Serena has a lively hustle and bustle atmosphere that I enjoyed.

The Serena is also fairly central, in the middle of Dar, 40 min from the airport. It is a bit far from the "peninsula" which has a beautiful coastline, nice restaurants and seemingly housing most ex-pat residents in Dar.

My only complaints related to a few (minor) service mishaps. Accidentally ringing my room at 5am, finding broken glass around the swimming pool (was promptly attended too), and deciding to clean the windows in the gym with some sort of very strong smelling toxic cleaner right next to where I was working out (I had to leave due to the headache).

I would also be remiss to mention that everyone in our party got sick at some point during the week-- and the only place we all ate was the hotel. May be coincidence, but definitely take precautions.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking tome to review our hotel. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us and your comments have been shared with all the staff. It is indeed true that our hotel is lively and the most convenient "meeting place" in Dar es Salaam mainly due to our prime central location within Dar es Salaam's Central Business District!

We have noted the areas of shortfall highlighted and rest assured that they received our full attention and remedial measures were instituted.

Thank you again for your feedback and we look forward to hosting you again.

I was visiting Dar se Salaam for business and as this was my first trip to Tanzania, I wasn't sure what to expect. Arriving to the hotel a security check was performed on our car after which we had to go through metal detectors before entering the hotel. Entering the hotel the lobby was very nice and big and the staff was very friendly. We got to wait in the lounge for our rooms to get ready and later they served snacks and drinks at the same lounge. The rooms were spacious and neat, with big beds and bathtubs in the bathroom. Wifi was fast and breakfast had plenty to choose from. The pool was very nice for a morning swim and the pool area looked nice for a drink or a snack. I was surprised by the gym which was overlooking the pool and larger than many hotel gyms I've visited and had proper air conditioning. The only thing I had a bit of an issue with was that I had forgotten my converter for the electricity outlets and the hotel had non to borrow. The lounge had a couple of EU outlets but they didn't work very reliably, which made charging my computer a more than a bit challenging. All in all a good business hotel, most of the guests also seemed to be there on business.

Dear Linda,

Thank you for taking time to review our hotel. We are delighted to note that you enjoyed your stay with us and your comments have been shared with all the staff!

Following your comments, we installed multiple international type extension cables in most of the sockets at the Executive Lounge and therefore our guests can now get a wider variety of outlets to choose from.

Once again, thank you for your valuable feedback and we look forward to hosting you again.
