The YMCA is located in the centre of town, and provides the very basic accommodation especially backpackers might be looking for. It's appears to be a dark and dodgy place, but once inside the actual compound it isn't too bad. It has a diner with a few standard dishes -ask what they have, never trust the menu, like anywhere else in Eastern Africa;)- and a small shop providing drinks, too.
The rooms have a 'colonial' air to them, with lots of wooden furniture and ancient fans. They are not clean to western standards, but fairly decent in any case. The bathrooms are shared, with simple showers and toilets.
The only real annoyance I found was the service of the receptionists; they didn't care at all, symbolizing the soul-less sence of the hostel. You really get what you pay for then, with the added bonus of being able to walk in 24/7.More
