“Kipepeo beach village, an excellent alternative”
Reviewed 17 January 2012

Whether you are looking for a place in the sun or an alternative to a noisy hotel in downtown Dar, this property has it all. Located only a ten minute taxi ride from the Kigamboni ferry landing, the Kipepeo beach resort offers you two storey bungalows with 'ensuite' bathroom facilities or simpler badas (huts) right on the Indian Ocean beach. There are good outdoor bar and restaurant facilities. You can rent guided dhow (local sailboat) service for fishing trips and sightseeing and lunch on the nearby Sinda Island.

I have stayed at Kipepeo 3 times now and I have to say that the Chalets which are set back from the beach are really light and airy - you don't need air con because you have a large balcony at the front of the bedroom and a window above the bed so there is always a sea breeze. The beach is beautiful and the staff (although unfortunately not the owner) are very friendly and helpful. The chalets are very clean and comfortable - although not luxurious.
If you really want to experience something of the "real Africa" there is a village nearby that shows how local people live and a local eating place called "Mamma Africa" which serves local food - extremely cheap and quite nice food. Dar Es Salaam is not far away and there are regular buses to take you to the ferry. I plan going again and will be taking my 2 grandchildren with me and one of my daughters next time.

Room Tip: The chalets may not have a sea view but as they are on stilts and the bedroom is upstairs they are a...

We were here for only 48 hours and could not get away fast enough. Stayed in one of the "chalets" which were pretty nice -- airy, clean, comfortable -- but at $80 USD per night (for a double) that's the least you'd expect. As for the rest of it: the food at the restaurant was revolting and overpriced, and the service, apart from one really lovely woman at the reception, plain sucked. We witnessed multiple conflicts between staff and customers, regarding the food, bills, etc. They only have cheap plastic chairs on the beach, no lounge chairs for lying down, and they don't provide enough of them, so people were getting cranky and taking chairs from one another. The beach and the water were dirty and the waves too big for swimming to be fun. It felt really seedy and the guards armed with big sticks and a rifle (!) just made us feel even less happy about being there. Most of all, I hated this place because I got sick on my last day and the restaurant made a big stink about making me plain toast to eat because it's "not on the menu." The manager was an a-hole, some white dude more interested in getting drunk with his buddies at the bar than dealing with any of the issues and conflicts going on around him. The only thing this place has going for is that it's in close proximity to Dar, but otherwise, blergh. Awful.

I stayed one night at the beach camp site, like many others at the end of 9 days of camping with an overland tour so this was a pretty good stop! The camp site is just off of the beach, close to the bar and shower / toilet block. Yes - hot water! Shower blocks have three showers, sinks and have two externally located sinks for laundry washing. Toilet blocks have sit and flush toilets. Like other camps, they provide power charging sockets in the bar area to charge your cameras and phones. There is also a tv / pool area. Some of the others in the group upgraded to the beach bandas (with double beds but have to use the shower blocks) for only $15 which is reasonable.

I also stayed one extra night at one of the chalets when I returned from Zanzibar. Short walk from the reception/ bar down a short pathway but there were always security guards nearby. Each chalet has decent shower / toilet downstairs, with comfortable beds with mosquito nets plus rooms open out onto a large balcony with table/ chairs/ hammock. Taxi to the airport took about 45mins and cost around $40.

The best things about the Kipepeo? It's comfortable, has good wi-fi for all those with laptops and iphones, plus it's right on the beach.

We stayed at Kipepeo after 9 nights' camping, so while it isn't 4 star luxury, it felt like it to us!

The setting cannot be beaten - on one of the most beautiful beaches I've seen, with lovely sand and warm sea. Swimming there after a long dusty drive was heaven! And it was lovely, especially for us Brits, that the children could stay in the water for ages without their extremities turning blue! The staff were very friendly and helpful. Service at the restaurant was quite slow but the breakfast was worth the wait (we only had breakfast there as we had our other meals with our tour crew). Our children in particular enjoyed the pool table in the bar area!

The beach huts were great. Some people have reviewed that they were a little disappointed that the huts didn't look onto the sea, but I'd looked on Google Earth before we left home (always a good idea before a visit) and knew that they were a little set back from the beach. You could certainly hear the waves from your bedroom - bliss! The bed was enormous and very comfy, with mosquito nets all round; the room was airy thanks to the window behind the bed; the veranda and hammock fabulous; and the bathroom very clean.

Highlight of staying at Kipepeo: the mongoose family who live near the beach huts! We saw one or two from our verandah one evening, and then the next morning we saw the whole group - around 20+ individuals including very cute babies - crossing from one side of the clearing to the other.

As others have said, don't come here if you want luxury, pool, a/c, wifi. But it would be a shame to come to the Tanzanian coast expecting all that when you can get it at home. Come here to chill and enjoy being with your friends and family in a beautiful location.

Situated on a lovely beach where you are sheltered from the beach traders by staff with sticks! Swimming is easy and beach clean. Beach chalets were clean and comfortable with nets and veranda where you could relax in a hammock, however they were further back from the beach than I expected and you couldn't really see the sea which was a disappointment as the pictures on the internet suggest different! Breakfast was included in the price for the chalet and the restaurant served food all day, with waitress service for drinks. Don't expect fast service though! Although you have to understand that you are in Tanzania.

After the hustle and bustle of city life...in Copenhagen and Daresalaam, we needed a quiet week and we agreed no cell phones, no tv, no internet...just sun and sand and the ocean ofcourse!!
We had made a booking 2 weeks before and the amazing thing was the welcome we received, smiling staff and very fast efficient bellboys who carried our luggage on a trolley shaped like a boat...LOL!! that was sooo cool!! Our beach hut was standing on stilts, kinda like a tree house...ohhh this on its own is therapeutic!! downstairs was a shower and bathroom, and upstairs was the 4 poster bed on a flat surface...with mosquito netting....and on the bed with white linen and zebra stripes....they lay on the bed cover...S( loveheart shape in btwn) and S... which stood for our first names...talk about attention to detail??? wow it was amazing!!!
Someone took time to make the stay unforgettable!!! with flowers on the basic dressing table...and the balcony was sea facing....we could only hear the sound of the ocean waves....wow this is an amazing place and we fell in love with it right there and then...NO TV, NO DESK PHONES, NO INTERNET and NO ROOM SERVICE, this was just what the therapist ordered!!
The staff are very friendly and cordial, helpfull and actually define the phrase AT YOUR BECK AND CALL!!!
Five stars go to the front desk girl by the name of Cecilia.,,, she was the best and can, we believe, bring you the moon if you requested...she really made our stay very comfortable and we vowed to go back every month...just to unwind and enjoy lifes little pleasures and luxuries....
Great location, right on the beach, security is great and its a plce to just go and rejuvinate and unplug from the rest of the world and plug with your partner...definitely works wonders on ANY relationship....Cheers to The Kipepeo Beach Village owners!!!
And the rartes are very friendly and fair... i must add.
