Lemala Ewanjan is the perfect camp for safari end. This small intimate property sits on the plain in the middle of nowhere. The only near neighbors are wild. The first night of three that we stayed there I fell asleep to the quiet sounds of lions huffing. Lions huffed and hyenas called to their pack mates and my dreams were filled with lions and zebras. I understood why our tent steward had told us to never unzip the flap until morning. I was not surprised to find lion tracks in camp on our way to breakfast.
We did not suffer in our tent at night, although photos don't seem to do them justice, the tents are pure luxury. They are twice the size of most tents, the beds are queen size, a writing desk, easy chair, bedside tables, steamer trunk, open closet and shelves leave enough room to dance. The bathrooms are huge and the "talking shower" is fun.
Our second day at Ewanjan was even better than the first, although the migration had split up into herds of thousands instead of one and a half million as usual, we had no trouble finding a herd of wildebeest numbering in the thousands. When we reached camp at the end of the day I couldn't wait to get into my nice warm shower and wash the dust out of my hair.
Dinner that evening was delightful. The meal was delicious and the travelers at Ewanjan were very interesting, isn't that the best part of staying at a small exciting place.
That night I again fell asleep to the huffing of lions, they sounded so very close but we were safely tucked into our beds with our hot water bottles. It must have been about 2:00 A.M. that the roaring started. The lions were in camp again roaring and roaring all night. Everyone was talking about the lions at breakfast and no one knew when exactly the roaring stopped because like me, feeling safe and warm, they had all gone back to sleep.
I truly can't wait to go back. Next year? Perhaps.
