Lamai Serengeti, Nomad Tanzania
Certificate of Excellence

The title above sums it up, the best of it's kind.
Having arrived at the local airstrip and been met by the team, we took the
long way back to Lamai in order to take a brief game drive around the local
area, the sheer volume of which amazed me. Within 20 minutes of getting
off the plane we were amongst countless antelope, wilderbeest, giraffes and
zebra (the list goes on), grazing on the grass plains, not to mention
seeing 2 of the 'big five'. Wildlife here seems so prevalent that you have
to remind yourself that this is reality!

Lamai resides on a large Kopje with miles of views across the plains of the
Serengeti, though you wouldn't see it as you approached as the buildings
blend very well into their surroundings, made of natural materials and
nestling into the hillside. As you wind your way up around the rocky
summit, suddenly you round a corner and find yourself in a camp that didn't
appear to exist from the plains below.

The rooms here are fabulous, basically individual lodges, each down it’s
own path with plenty of privacy between them. I was in room 7, which was
very spacious with a private viewing terrace in front offering a fabulous
view…even laying in bed you have a view across the plains below, and all of
it all the more ‘live’ as the floor to ceiling ‘windows’ are made up
transparent netting – so you are very much in the environment as the breeze
blows through the room. This makes a real difference, as you can see and
hear everything around you, whilst being in a very comfortable and
luxurious room (this is after all certainly not to be confused with
camping!), something that becomes apparent when you go to sleep to the
sound of the roars of a lion pride (living on the rocks nearby) roaring
into the night… In fact one afternoon after taking a siesta, I was awoken
by a mysterious noise and when I opened the room door, I found two
Elephants eating from the tree in front of me – literally 10 feet from the
room!

You are very much a part of nature here, this is what I believe makes it
such a unique and genuine experience...thus when nightfall comes and the
‘local wildlife’ come out of the shade and back into life, the local Massai
night watchmen will escort you between the main lodge (bar and dining area)
and your room – just in case anything is wondering through the camp!!
Every morning when I awoke for the early morning game drives I found fresh
footprints across the paths outside!!

As for life in the camp, it very much revolves around what you want to do
as a guest, whether that is taking drives, walks, relaxing by the pool and
enjoying the view – or a combination of the above as I did. Every evening,
drinks are hosted by the hosts Nic and Jana. They really make the
experience, with excellent knowledge of the both the local area and the
wildlife that populates it…having explained they had managed several
properties, both within Tanzania and South Africa it really made a
difference to have such knowledgeable, experienced and above all friendly
hosts, for whom nothing was too much to trouble to make their guests’
experience as good as possible – something of particular benefit when
travelling alone as I was, as I joined Nic, Jana and the other guests for
dinner and drinks in the evenings – a great time to swap stories, compare
sightings from the day and plan the next day’s activities. On that note,
food in the camp is very good, bizarrely I had one of the best Veal
Holsteins ever – in quite spectacular surroundings (much have been Jana’s
German influence playing it’s part!)… Again this is very much made up as
to how you would like it to be, whether it’s a private dinner for two - or
with the hosts, taking breakfast on the terrace – or on the banks of the
river next to a bloat of hippos bathing, Nic and Jana were there to make
it happen.

Overall, a fabulous experience, with attention to detail and the most
welcoming hosts – all of this in the midst of nature. Go – you will not be
disappointed.

We concluded our safari with a few days at Lamai, which as many reviewers have said a fantastic place. Nick and Jana were great hosts, the food was super, but the best part was Nomad's guide, Ken. If you're going to Africa for the accommodations the place is first rate, but we went to experience the animals, the place, the sunsets and sunrises. And with Ken we not only learned a little bit more about our world but also a little Swahili along the way. You have to see Nomad's lion pride and hear them at night. Highly recommended.

This is a fabulous place to stay..the rooms are wonderful, the staff are excellent and the guides go out of their way to make the Safari a life time memory!!! Not to forget, the food is SUPERB!!! We stayed here after a medical mission and were exhausted...they took excellent care of us. The entire site is tucked into a hill and blends into the Serengeti perfectly, a lot of thought went into the design...the view goes for miles and miles. There are animals to be soon in the distance from your balcony and darling mongoose running around. It's an amazing place!!!

This fantastic lodge which is set into a hillside overlooking miles and miles of the completely unspoilt Tanzanian plains is a jewel. The land is teeming with wildlife - even the drive from the airfield afforded views of giraffes, zebras, elephants and a pride of lions and the driver wasn't even trying! So when taken for game drives by John, who is hugely experienced in guiding, I was constantly amazed and in wonder at the sights there are to behold. A giraffe giving birth at sundown - crocodiles and hippos basking - a relaxed male leopard chilling out on a rock. And all the animals and birds and reptiles seemed untroubled and unthreatened by our presence. The hospitality at Lamai is superb, and, as a lone traveller, it was great to be part of what felt rather like a private house party hosted with ease and geniality and humour by Jana and Nic. Cuisine excellent, staff helpful and friendly and - guess what - I really really didn't want to leave the peace, tranquillity and awe inspiring views from my lovely balcony!

The experience at Lamai was amazing. It's located on a hill top in the middle of the northern territories of the Serengeti. Just a stone throw away from Masai Mara. I would highly recommend this place to everyone. The facilities are high class and the view is amazing. From our bedroom we could spot several animals including giraffes, gnu's, gazelles and baboons etc. There is also two very nice pool areas with fantastic view over the Serengeti.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. During nights you need a staff member to follow you to your room due to wild animals roaming the area. You could hear lion roars and baboon sounds at night.

During the day we went on a tour in one of their jeeps and we got to see almost the whole big five (excl. leopard) but we got the chance to see cheetah from just 4 meters distance. The guides were also really friendly and knowledgeable.

The whole experience was way above the expectations and I would recommend anyone considering going to Serengeti to stay at the Lamai!

Room Tip: All rooms comes with an amasing with over the north side of the Serengeti and you can even see Kenya...

Lamai was absolutely amazing. Stayed at four places on our trip and this was by far the best. The facilities were beautiful and immaculate. I would highly recommend this location while the migration is traveling the plains in the area. We saw cheetas, leopards, lions, elephants, rhinos and about 8 types of antelope. The safari was wonderful and the place, people, and food were fantastic. Loved the hospitality of Nic and Jana.

Room Tip: Every room had a beautiful view, but closer to the common areas requires less walking.
