Kirawira Serena Camp
Certificate of Excellence

This is a truly beautiful tented camp. The tents are a throwback to the Victorian era, the decor is outstanding. They are big, spacious, comfortable and all have a large deck with amazing views. The pool area is very relaxing and the food is very good. You can get a massage on your tent deck overlooking the Serengeti. What an experience! At night we could hear the critters walking around the camp and the lions roaring! This is a very good option in the Serengeti.

Room Tip: Tents 101 to 106 are easier to access and not too many steps to get to them.

The rooms were beautifully appointed, baths were lovely, the food and service were great. The staff was friendly, and the grounds and lobby were beautiful, but unfortunately, the tent we stayed in had openings in the zippered door, it was in need of repair. We went to bed with no bug bites but woke with nasty welts. The doctor had to be called. It was unfortunate, but considering the cost of this property, I would think more care would be taken to prevent such events.

Room Tip: You don't want room one. It is very close to the car park and people are coming and going at al...

This camp is located in the western part of the Serengeti. Although this camp is a Small Luxury Hotel, it has more a feel of the larger corporate chain Serena of which it is a part. Service and attention to detail is not up to the standards of some of the other small camps we visited. The menu in the restaurant has a nice variety of selections and the food quality was good. The pool overlooking the Serengeti is a nice place to relax after a warm game drive. At the time that we visited, there were not a lot of game in close vicinity to the camp. I know this varies by season and also by year. It is nice to have 24 hour availability of electricity and plenty of hot water as Kirawira did. Overall, Kirawira "met" our expectations but did not "exceed" them.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have a view so make sure to request a view of the Serengeti.

We watched the migration at Kirawira, staying two nights here. Staff, food, and rooms were great. Pool view was amazing. This was easily the most impressive place and staff during our trip to Africa and I was sad to we didn't stay an extra night.

We arrived at Kirawira after a long dusty drive through the Serengeti, it was the last week of May and the animals had already begun to congregate for the crossing. We were received at the reception by very warm and staff who communicated very clearly how the camp worked.

The main reception tent is at a height and gives you spectacular views of the Serengeti. At this time of the year it is particularly special.

The rooms were very well appointed and comfortable, enough water was provided in the rooms and most importantly the plug points for charging cameras and laptops were very well though of and placed. Lying in bed or sitting on the verandah we had spectacular views of animals - zebras, wildebeest, elephants and I even work up to the sound of a lion roaring. If you are a bird watcher, there are excellent birding opportunities in the camp.

The staff were excellent and the food really was outstanding. I would go back in a flash.

I recently stayed 2 nights at the Kirawira camp. The camp was nicely appointed with designer features, and the luxury tents were superb.

What I did not enjoy was the heavy use of colonialism in the camp's design. The colonialists were in many ways quite disrespectful, so (for example) the camp to display photographs of these people killing their trophy animals was rather strange. I much preferred other places I stayed which emphasized use of Tanzanian & Masai decor.

The staff were generally friendly, but lacking in communication and ability to be "passively present". For example, I was woken up at night by a phone call asking if I would like a wake up call, when I had already mentioned to 2 separate staff that no call was needed. We would also be constantly interrupted at meals by multiple staff, which (although would have been friendly the 1st or 2nd time), got annoying after a while.

The food was excellent and we felt like we were right within nature, with lions audible outside the tent one evening.
