“Fantastic camp - so glad it was available”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 June 2012

Mbuzi Mawe is a wonderful tented camp located in the Serengeti. Of all the Serena properties on the Northern Circuit I stayed in, I'd have to say this was my favorite one. The tents are huge and have two double or queen beds. The colors inside are nice and bright making it light and airy. Not only was there a desk area with appropriate height chair but there was a small seating area which was good for reading or journal writing. The bathroom had double sinks and there was a large reclining lounger on the patio area. The food was excellent and the staff more attentive than at the other Serena properties. The best part was the closeness of the wildlife. Since the camp is not fenced, you are escorted starting in the early evenings. Good thing as there was a large Cape Buffalo next to my tent after dinner. There are plenty of photogenic klipspringers throughout and if your quiet, they will come very close. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Tent #14 was very quiet.

This is one of the Serena hotel in the Serengeti, a small and exquisite luxury tents I loved most.I has only 16 tents, almost all the waiters could remember my name.Even before or after one day's safari, they all will affectionately greet the previous night's accommodation or safari today.I t made us like at home.
The sevice was elegant and quiet but efficent. The food was amazing. One night all the chefs came out from kitchen with a cake to greet a new married couple's honeymoon, singing the famous “Jambo Bwana".This scene was warm and memorable!
Our tent was No.7,close to the gate of tent camp with a simple plant twigs fence separated the camps and the vast plains,.One night also heard the breathing of a cloven-hoofed animals!!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE this tent!

We spent here 2 nights. We were not informed in the check in that they are available security boxes so we kept the money inside the tent. The only moments when we left the bag alone were the lunch and dinner times. 150$ were missing from the wallet!!! When we told the manager, he accepted our complains but he Didnt do anything at all!!! He said he will call the police and that is all... I do not recomend this hotel at all, specially to honeymooners like us. This kind of incidents make your honeymoon not perfect.

We loved it here! The staff were wonderful and it's small, so you can get to know the staff a bit. Very comfortable and clean accommodations, great big bathrooms with hot water. Food was pretty good too.

Lovely location and great service. Rooms are spectacular...we had a twin with 2 massive double beds in it! Food was a bit disappointing – looked a lot better than it actually tasted. Breakfast was good although the coffee, which was great on day one, was not so great on the second day for some inexplicable reason! Packed lunches were ok. Drinks and internet cost extra. Staff were friendly and attentive.

We reserved a tent at Mbuzi Mawe for two nights on our safari. Hours before we were headed to the camp our guide received a call from Serena Hotels (who operate the camp) to see if we would move because the camp was overbooked. Our guide told them "they aren't hotel people." On their third phone call they offered to 'upgrade' us to the 5 star Kempinski Lodge. Once we confirmed that we would get to Mbuzi Mawe on the second night we agreed to move. MISTAKE!

The Bilala Kempinski Lodge was beautiful. Our room was elegant. The food was excellent. But, we were in a big commercial hotel full of large tour groups. Not our cup of tea. When we got to Mbuzi Mawe the next day and saw how lovely and friendly and comfortable it was, we were very sorry we moved the night before.

Mbuzi Mawe is located in the midst of huge kopjes which are alive with wildlife. I watched a range of beautiful multi-coloured lizards and salamanders sun on the rocks. Monkeys, baboons and hyrax were plentiful, and a herd of elephants visited the camp shortly after we arrived.

The tents are well appointed, the water was wonderfully hot and we were surprised by the fact they had a masseuse on site. We both enjoyed relaxing massages in our tent before we had cocktails on the deck and mingled with the other guests.

The staff were exceptionally helpful and bent over backwards to accommodate our every wish. When I asked if they might have sangria (it was a sangria kind of day) they got that wonderful glazed over look which meant they not only didn't have it, they had never heard of it. However, they were open to a quick mixology course and I and several other guest enjoyed sangria on the deck.

At dinner one of the guest had a birthday and they had made a special birthday cake (she was 86 and it was her fifth visit to the camp). The whole staff came to sing and we all got birthday cake!

The comparison between the two experiences reinforced for us the range of experiences that are available in the Serengeti and that we much preferred the small, intimate, extremely comfortable tented camp experience. We would recommend this mode of accommodation to anyone who travels to Africa and wants the Out of Africa experience. Great, clean tents, great showers (even in the mobile camps which are slightly more rustic), great food, and a chance to sit outside or on a deck and compare stories and pictures with equally excited travellers. Mbuzi Mawe stands out in our mind as a first class tented camp.

Our only complaint was that we learned they were also overbooked the night we were there and some guests actually stayed in the manager's cabin. This has more to do with Serena hotels than Mbuzi Mawe.
