Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 13 August 2014

It was a wonderful setting inside the Serengeti National Park. You won't find a more helpful and responsive staff anywhere. Just marvelous experience. The rates may be quite high, however. I saw a very high-end tour group come in and stayed there.

Room Tip: I think all the rooms are good. I had a lower room and the view was more than adequate.

This is second of our five stays in a serena hotel during our Tanzania trip (We spent total of 13 days in Tanzania and stayed at 5 different Serena hotel/lodge/tents. Our needs were: a great safari experience, safe and comfortable hotel (our daughter has nut allergies - so safe has a different meaning). As we researched our trip, we came across many tours that included serena hotels. On a whim, we called up Serena directly and they arranged our entire trip. A trip of a lifetime. Aloyce Otieno was our contact person and was excellent and his help).

After Lake Manyara, we stayed for 3 nights at Serengeti Serena Hotel, on our way to the hotel we did game drive and visited Odupai Gorge (as it is known in Masai). The services and attention to our needs continued to be excellent. The chefs and the wait staff cared for our needs and Chef Angela prepared specific meals at our request. Chef Rodrick Soy (sp?) was also excellent.

The location and the hotel itself is amazing. They had leopards on the hotel property in April; we saw dikdik, baboons, and apparently there was a lion the night before. You do have to (and we did) use escort services at night time to go back and forth to the dining area as you are in a jungle. It is 8 km from the main road (and you could get games during this drive... though we did not see any leopards here).

We did not use the pool, the wifi was good for facebook, IM, and Facetime.

The front desk and laundry services were great. Overall, a great experience. Would recommend to anyone with specific needs or a good experience.

This is a place wehre you can be completely disconnected and be in the nature if you wish.

What a fantastic place right in the Serengeti National park! The location of this place was brilliant and the view from our "rondaval" was one of the best views I have ever seen! Note: we had an upstairs rondaval that was really close to the hotel, so I would get one of these if you can! :)

The little rondavals are great and work beautifully in your surroundings. They even had a lovely pool which was great to dip into after a hard day on safari! ;) Although there are no changing facilities, just toilets. You still are in the Serengeti so you need to be escorted to your room at night, even if you are just across from the main hotel section.

The rooms were as expected of our serena experience - lovely, clean, well presented and well laid out. The same comfy bed and pillows - serena really do well on sleep quality in my opinion! :) However, again, the shower could be more powerful, but it was lovely and hot - the best out of the three serena hotels we have been in!

It appeared that the serena experience improved throughout the safari and this was definitely the better hotel for food and drink vs the other two serena hotels we stayed in (lake duluti and ngorongoro). The food was buffet style and there were some cooking stations, so there was more variety and the dining experience was more relaxed and informal than the other serena hotels which had a buffet/set menu mix. However, the food standard (like the service across all these hotels in Tanzania) is not the same as a UK/EU hotel of the same hotel rating - I did notice some chefs using the same utensil for cooking raw meat and then people's orders on the cooked meat, so that did put me off the stir fry cooking corner! This hotel does sparkling wine by the glass which I had sorely missed and the drinks selection was definitely much better than the lake duluti and ngorongoro serena hotels.

Overall, a great experience, and if you accept that the hotel ratings are for Tanzania and not UK/EU then you will not be disappointed! :)

Room Tip: Upstairs in the rondaval and close to the main hotel complex!

We stayed here 2 nights and think this must be one of the most wonderful hotels we have ever stayed in. We had an upstairs room overlooking the plains and could watch the sun go down while animals strolled in the light woodland below us. The room had an enormous double bed with a mosquito net and was well decorated and the bathroom had a good shower. The main dining area was approached through the bar area which when we stayed got busy by seven pm in the outside seats. Lovely setting and the local water buffalo, Dik diks and the odd zebra strolled by. There is a good swimming pool from which you can again look out over the hills and by son thought watch zebra while being in the pool was the event of a lifetime. The food was better than the other Serena hotel we stayed in with the buffet breakfast being excellent and some form of BBQ food cooked in the evening. There is wi-if connected via satellite and the signal was pretty good considering the number of guests being served. Very sad to leave and could not recommend more.

Room Tip: Get a top floor room

We stayed at the lodge for two nights as we travelled through the Serengeti on the first of four safaris. The location is great, accommodation great, staff & service great. Shame about the food. Its a buffet and the food is pretty average. After the first day we realised you had to get something cooked fresh to have a decent meal. We stayed at three Serena lodges and visited another and can say that the staff here were the best. Friendly, helpful, nothing was too much trouble. the accommodation was fantastic. If you are new to safaris and or want to see lots of animals this is the place to go. Can get busy on the roads with lots of cars around but that means the animals are used to the cars. We were picked up from Mwanza taken through the west gate right through the Serengeti to Ngorongoro.

Room Tip: Get a room on the top floor furthest away from the reception, bar, restaurant areas.

We just returned from a 3 week stay in East Africa. We stayed at all Serena hotels and we found this property to be unique because it blends into the natural setting of the Serengeti. I loved seeing the various animals that "arrive" at night near the main lodge. There were also some snake sightings on the grounds but after all it is Africa! The rooms were beautifully appointed and very clean. The food was probably some of the best we had at the various Serena hotels. I would definitely consider staying here the next time.

Perched on a hill overlooking parts of the vast Serengeti plains, this lodge is a marvelous place to relax and enjoy nature.
At a height of 5,000 feet it is a bit of a wheeze for the elderly or those with breathing problems.
The rooms are cleverly constructed to resemble Bomas and you do not realise that there is an adjacent room at a different level. The open verandah is a delight as plenty of birds and small animals are to be seen. However, the management recommends the door be closed after sunset incase a leopard should come calling!

The service is impeccable and very helpful and the hard working Chef takes personal care of your request for the next morning's packed lunch.

Room Tip: For the elderly, definitely a room near the reception.
