“interesting and sobering”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

This was a major slave port for the Asian slave trade which persisted up until the British colonization in 1900. A tragic story, this sight is a great historical sight. Chilling memorial to the slaves. Don't miss it.

“Norhing special”
Reviewed 11 July 2014 via mobile

Visit to stone town was disappointing. Nothing is kept in good shape and historical sites are blended with mothern trash. Only slavemarket is worth a quick visit before visiting prison island.

“One of the few highlights of Stone Town”
Reviewed 22 March 2014

Overall we were a little disappointed by Stone Town and absolutely harassed by street touts in the Forodhani Gardens / Old Fort area. One of the few highlights of our visit, however, was the Old Slave Market and Anglican Cathedral. For a very reasonable fee, a guide will take you down to a couple of old holding cells that hardly seem big enough to hold the 50 grown men or 75 women and children that would wait there before being taken to auction at the market. The actual market is no more and has been replaced by a reasonably attractive Cathedral with interesting history all its own. The altar sits on the spot where slaves were whipped to see how much they should be worth at auction (the ones who didn't cry out were supposed to be tougher and worth more), and there is a cross made out of wood from the tree that Dr. Livingstone's heart was buried under. It won't take long to see it, and it is a part of the island's history that should not be ignored.

“Tour of Stonetown”
Reviewed 7 March 2014

The Old Slave Market and Anglican cathedral were very sobering ..our guide was very knowledgeable and made part of the experience come to life by his descriptions. Hard to imagine humans being held underground like that.
We were allowed to quickly look in the church as under repair.

“Extraordinarily moving”
Reviewed 23 February 2014

This was so understated and moving, really worth visiting. The underground slave cells were shocking and the modern sculpture at the auction site moving and beautiful.
