The hotels and touristy attractions in Matmata are a bit lackluster. That said the landscape alone and the little villages outside of the town are a sight not to be missed. I wouldn't really suggest staying overnight in Matmata. You'd be better off doing a day visit from Djerba or other surrounding cities. However, if you do stay I would recommend Marhala. The food is good and both the food and beer are cheap. The rooms are also quite interesting. A warning though, if you get there during the day make sure to lock your door even if you leave for just a second. My wife and I checked in a opened the door to the room, proceeded to get the bags out of the car, closing the door but not locking it on our way out, and when we returned 5 minutes later there were 20 German tourists cluttered inside our room.

Stopped here during a tour of the south of Tunisia. Rooms were very basic but usable, food was typical Tunisian and quite tasty, Staff were friendly and prices considering the hotels isolated position reasonable. The small pool area was clean and the cold water a refreshing relief from the desert sun. Be aware a large number of coach tours lunch here so can be very busy during the day.

I spent 2 nights in Matmata, one in Sidi Driss hotel and another in Marhala hotel (we also checked Matmata and Kousseila hotels). After a horrible and cold experience at Sidi Driss, I can say that Marhala is by far the best hotel in Matmata. It seems the hotel has been renovated since 2009; the new management are very hospitable and warm, rooms are nice and tidy (with different size options), they also have new showers and clean toilets and most importantly, very good food! Room rates are also very reasonable (14$ for half pension). Our experience was overall a really pleasurable one. If you visit Matmata, I advise you to go straight to Marhala hotel. Enjoy your berber experience!

We knew it would be basic which fine but staff very offhand eg thought we were unreasonable when wanted a change of room as no seat on wc!. 2 Further rooms later, we accepted a room with no curtain on shower though size of bathroom meant this needed - toilet rolls sodden by last users due to lack of. Air conditioning liquid came under door and ran across the floor - luckily we had a newspaper which soaked it up for 2 nights. Breakfasts minimal - pleasant waiter but bread stale and persistent flies in dining room. Room not made up during our 2 day stay.

It seemed that most guests were overnight coach parties, and little comeback to poor provision and service.

Had swimming pool and some rooms had view over dramatic scenery. Small village, so cafes (no real restaurants) all local.

Would stay in another hotel if went again.

We booked via Travel Republic, then needed to cancel one room. Process extremely ponderous an dthey took large % of cost in cancellation fees..

Having opted not to stay in one of the troglodite hotels we headed for the hotel Matmata. First impressions were not good as there were three coach loads of Italian teenagers, but a quick chat with the guy on reception and he told us that the groups stop their for lunch but stay somewhere else. The room was a good size and everything worked. We opted for Demi Pension which included our eveing meal and that was best value option as eating places seemed to be lacking in the town. The food was very good, a four course evening meal, including a veggie option. The breakfast was the standard Tunisian hotel fair, you know bread, cheese triangles, jam, butter, stewed coffee...... The location is very good, close to the museum and troglodite houses and not far to visit some of the surrounding villages. The pool was drained and empty which was real shame as we could have seriously done with that the first day but otherwise it was a good stay, helpful staff etc. The only draw back is the hoard of 'guides' and other touts that hang around the entrance, wanting to take you to different places, they are really persistent and the hotel does little to discourage them. We went to the museum on our own and the lady there asked us how we found it, we told her it was in our guide book and thought the question was strange until five minutes later one of the men who had been hanging around outside the hotel turned up and tried to claim that he'd brought us there. She was having none of it and he was dispatched after a right telling off.

It was a minor niggle and would stay there again
