“Very good value, comfortable - a legitimate hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2014

This is a great place to stay in Tunisia. It is fresh and clean, has comfortable and modern rooms with nice furnishings, and has a great breakfast buffet.

I would recommend it to anyone looking for an honest deal in Tunis. It's not over the top luxury, but it is comfortable and in a great location.

I did not expect such a luxurious stay for the price I paid. The new renovated rooms make you feel like you are at a 5 start hotel. Plus it is located right on Avenue Habib Bourguiba near shops and la medina. The breakfast buffet was excellent, the wifi worked well throughout the entire hotel and when I had a problem with my booking, the manager was extremely accommodating. Anytime I'm in Tunis, I will always chose to stay at the Carlton!

Good hotel located a convenient location. Nothing fancy but clean and comfortable. It is like Ibis hotel per say…
There is no shampoo and conditioners in its bathroom. Just a soap(shampoo) dispenser. But there is a hairdryer in the bathroom.
No fridge, no kettele in a room so don't stay much time in the room. You will be busy going out and exploring this city.
Medina is about 10-15min walk. There is a shopping centre right near the hotel. Grocery stores on the basement level. There are so many shops and restaurants around anyway.

clean rooms, friendly staff, good breakfast. beds were comfortable. Unfortunately, single beds joined to make it a double bed. big gap between 2 beds. Not a good scenario for husband and wife. Even on holidays kept us separate.

Just spent four nights at this gem of a hotel located on Tunis's Main Street Avenue Habib Bourguiba. I was given a room on the newly renovated first floor with terrace. The rooms are extremely clean and well maintained. The breakfast located on the same floor was simply but sufficient. The hotel is walking distance to all the restaurants and cafés as well as transportation and the old medina. Highly recommended.

Great hotel in the centre of town. Breakfasts are good with a good variety and the rooms clean. The bathrooms are spotless, something I always look at. I think most if not all of the rooms have been renovated and they are looking good. There was some work being done in the corridor and I think they are working on rooms at the front of the hotel at the moment but I was happy. My room was at the back and have to say that I needed to wear ear plugs at night. But this is to be expected when you consider that the hotel is on the main road through the city. They offer a taxi service to the airport (about 10 mins) for 20 dinar. Whilst on that subject be careful at the airport, taxi drivers don't like to use their meters. In g=fact it is an offence not to use them, however, tourists find this hard to navigate at times. The starting price for me was 45 dinar in to town. The price for the locals under 10 dinar....best of luck, I have to say that I was content to get it down to 20 dinar, though they still did not use the meter. The hotel is 10 mins walk to the main railway station (for all other main cities and towns), 5 mins from the Medina and about 10 mins from Tunis Nord railway station for Carthage and Sidi Bou Said. This local railway is under some heavy renovation at the moment. The stations are being repaired as is the line. At the time of writing (May 2014) the trains actually stop at Carthage Presidence with a rail replacement bus service running from there to Marsa. For those of us in the UK used to these, it was still easy to use, the buses waiting at Carthage Presidence station for the trip north. For Sis Bou Said - you want the stop after it turns the corner (to the left) that has a café on it about 4-5 mins after leaving Carthage Presidence. On the return the bus replacement stops at the Sidi Bou Said station ticket office.

I am a devoted repeat customer for many reasons. First, this gem of a hotel is ideally situated and has more charm than all the other business hotels combined. It is equally welcoming of tourists and business travellers alike. The recent refurbishments are wonderful and yet the management have not directly passed on those costs to customers, keeping the Carlton at a remarkable price point. Moreover, the service and staff deliver service at a much higher standard than any three star I have ever experienced.

Critically, the American educated Tunisian owner is never complacent! Thanks to his exacting commercial standards, you will NEVER hear the common phrase, "mais c'est pas comme ca que ca marche ici Monsieur." You ask, you receive - and with a smile to boot.

Tip: book online directly rather than through www.booking.com. You will get a better rate AND most likely a better room as you've cut out a middle man. You are a higher margin customer to the hotel and the Tunisian economy. You will be rewarded.
