Many others have stated it before me, and I can only repeat all that has been said about Dar Ben Gacem's impeccable service, friendlyness, great location, helpfulness, cozyness and layout of the property. I can only recommend this place and hope that others in Tunesia will follow the lead. If there should be two things to comment, then it is firstly the bad smell from the bathroom in the Alia room and secondly a quite short bed in the same room. Being 187 cm tall I had problems laying there. Otherwise, this guest house is as good as they get!

I have the opportunity to stay in many properties throughout Tunisia, as well as placing clients in properties and getting their feedback. It is no secret that “service” is a constant problem in Tunisia’s tourism industry. The concept that a hotelier or a restaurant should “put their best foot forward at the beginning”, as Americans say, and do so with a smile…is regrettably, not always the Tunisia experience.
Leila Ben Gacem, the entrepreneurial owner of the recently opened Dar Ben Gacem has got it right! She lovingly restored an old home in the Tunis medina and graced it with hand-picked artwork, both antique and modern, from various places in Tunisia and other countries. Each room and each of the common areas has its unique touch…a visual treat. Rooms all have telephone/wifi/television, but tucked discreetly from initial view so as not to jar the esthetics of the rooms. The fixtures, the bathroom provisions and the bedding all make for a delightful stay. But that’s just part of the story...
Dar Ben Gacem provides multiple places throughout the house where guests can enjoy their breakfast with other guests or quietly on their own. The property does not have kitchen facilities for dining, but Dar Ben Gacem can arrange for guests to have special meals prepared by local cooks to either eat in the propertyl or to take on a day’s excursions. There is also a wonderful rooftop terrace where one can enjoy the architectural splendor of this historic, wonderful city.
As special as Dar Ben Gacem is, I hesitate telling too many people for fear it will be hard to book a room in the future. (I have already faced this problem, personally!!!) Meeting with guests visiting from both Paris and Washington, DC and hearing them rave about everything is the way it should be! However, if putting the word out provides guests with a special place to stay, and a way to enjoy the medina and Tunisia, then it is worth it! Hopefully, the “service with a smile” approach at Dar Ben Gacem will inspire other hoteliers in Tunisia to see that it is possible to have a wonderful, unique property AND consistently provide top notch service and warmth. If that should happen, then this review will be a “win-win” for everyone!

Room Tip: All the rooms are equally charming. It is in size that they vary...

Dar ben gacem is owned, operated, and situated between local tunisians who display their culture in every corner.
we visited as female travellers first time in tunisia , and couldnt have felt safer or more at home!

Leila, the owner, arranged for a tour from day 1 of our arrival, and after checking in and a lovely chat with the local manager who told us about Medina and story of how Dar Ben Gacem came to be, we slept in customized rooms with unique names under 17 century art installments!

next morning, after dinner and chat on terrace, a local young tour guide was arranged for us and walked us around Medina and its souks.

in our 3 days, local food was served to us with stories being explained patiently so we truly understood local cuisine and heritage.

due to its location in medina, we were always within walking distance of something going on (we even walked into a free local concert just next door one evening! other guests told us how they attended a local wedding) - if you dont know what to do just ask the friendly & knowledgeable staff and they'll recommend how to pass your time at any time of the day.

Dar Ben Gacem is 7 beautiful and carefully restored rooms, and we chatted to other visitors who were staying there comfortably.

by the time we left, I felt like everyone there was a close friend.

One of the lovliest experiences I had ever- will def visit again.

Ask for Chaikh or Aliyah rooms :) my fav

We stayed for 2 nights at Dar Ben Gacem, and it was fantastic. It was well located not to far from the main thoroughfares of the medina, and in quite a nice quiet area. The easiest place to get a taxi from is Place du Government which is a 5-10min walk. The Dar itself was very tastefully and sensitively decorated to bring out the best features of the old house but with a modern touch. We especially liked the various seating areas around the house to relax and the terrace was such a nice place to sit and read and have breakfast as well.

I stayed 3 nights at Dar Ben Gacem and I have enjoyed every single moment. This is the perfect place to explore the Medina. Attention to details made me feel I was staying in a luxury place which does not happen very often in Tunisia.
The area is not easily accessible by car due to the narrow streets and traffic during the day. Walking is the best option, avenue Habib Bourguiba is only a 30 mn walk.

Beautifully restored house in the Medina. Quiet, tastefully decorated and very relaxing. The staff and Leila the owner were discreet but very friendly and helpful. It is walking distance from the main sights. Highly recommended it. Perfect place to stay to experience life in the Medina.

I take great pains to find the right hotel in any city -- so if you're staying in Tunis you need to book with Leila in lovely Dar Ben Gacem. The people of Tunisia are really exceptional. Warm, open and so eager to talk with you. To have such a lovely and welcoming place as Dar Ben-Gacem made the perfect start to a great 10 days in Tunisia. The Dar is perfectly situated near the souks so that you feel the cadence of the locals in their regular work day. There is a great new restaurant/tea/coffee shop just down the road called La Parenthese. We celebrated my birthday lunch there and truly had some of the most flavorful food we've tasted anywhere. Ben Gacem has recently opened so don't worry if you haven't seen it written about, I'm sure in a year's time this will be the place to stay !

Leila also helped coordinate an lovely tour of the city with a historian. When I failed to inform Leila about my limited french, Leila actually came on the tour with us to help translate !

Room Tip: we stayed up on the second floor which I would recommend
