“another overpriced tired lodge in Zimbabwe”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 December 2013

A lovely location, on the banks of river inlets on a dam of the Seruwi River near Selous, about an hour out of Harare on the Bulawayo road. Individual cottages overlooking the water, serene location with birds and insects to watch. Set in a larger game park, large mammals but no carnivores officially BUT stop press at least one leopard has moved into the park, so that's great. There ands the positives unfortunately. Price: $169 pppn, dinner, bed and breakfast, whether you're local or from overseas. Ouch! Fixtures and fittings looked tired, kettle didn't work, solar heating didn't work, geyser didn't work, got moved to anew room where shower mixer didn't work so had choice of scalding or freezing water. At this point, gave up and went for dinner. Food was appalling (for a place billed as a four-star lodge). Greasy cold chips. Greasy fish. Salad was overdressed iceberg lettuce. Starter supposed to be bruschetta, but turned out to be lightly toasted stale bread with tinned asparagus on top with some thai sweet chilli sauce on it (what? why???). Sent it back. Main course veggies were cold, more greasy fish, worst pepper sauce ever seen, looked like sick. Sent it back. Couldn't even bring ourselves to find out what desert was! Very disappointing, just not good enough for that kind of price. Unfortunately there are resorts all over Zimbabwe like it, charging through the nose but not meeting international standards. Just be honest with yourselves, guys, admit you can't provide a service to match that price and bring your prices down to a fair and reasonable level and don't pretend to be something you're not. Service was OK but the waiter's English wasn't good enough to enquire about dishes, and the main chef was away catering for a wedding. All in all, a big let down because it looked so lovely on the website. Will do self-catering at a National Parks lodge next time, at least you know what to expect - basic, clean cottage and self catering! Shame.

Room Tip: Most rooms are on the river, so there's little to choose between them.

Dear Emma H
Our sincere apologies that your stay did not live up to expectation. We have moved to solar so that we utilise renewable energy but we are having challenges with the solar geysers when the weather is overcast. we are rectifying this by putting elements into the geysers. Our staff erroneously thought you were part of the wedding party when you checked in. With most of the staff concentrated on the wedding function at our sister lodge you obviously feel that you did not receive the best attention. Once again, our sincere apologies for this.

First impressions were of a lodge past it's prime - everything looking a bit run down. The rooms were fairly small, but comfortable - and the day beds and private garden next to the cottages were nice. There were a couple of issues with hot water supply in our party and the bathroom was cramped.

There were lots of choices of activities, though the game viewing was very disappointing if you are used to any of the bigger game reserves. The guides were excellent though and made the most of the bush around.

Food was basic and institutional. It was perfectly edible but would not be any reason to stay.

In summary, the people and service were great, but there were details that let them down.

From the moment that I arrived at Harare airport to the moment I departed, I was in seventh heaven. We were collected by the charming and most friendly Gievas, who drove us the short distance from the City Centre to the Lodge, the hours journey went by in a flash. We were met by all the reception staff, who offered a most welcoming chilled drink! The lovely Mandy, showed us to the Royal Lodge, we were most impressed with the Green Credentials - solar powered hot water, and extensive use of local materials. Stepping out on the balcony, hearing the call of the Fish Eagle and spotting a Buffalo drinking from the river below us was mind blowing! The well stocked bar , with nibbles that were rustled up by the kitchen in a nano second, were so welcome! The extensive activities were explained in detail and we did them all! Each guide was enthusiastic and knowledgable on his topic and this added to the whole experience. The Elephant interaction and ride, stand out in our memories, as does the love that the handlers have for their majestic beasts. Service in the dinning room could not be faulted, the staff are genuine and charming. There was an abundance of food, not extraordinary ,but perfect for our needs, with a good selection of South African wines. If I could sum up the four key points, they would be; proximity to the City, friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, the variety of activities as well as the comfortable surroundings.

The place is just beautiful. The reception staff were extremely polite and respectful. My colleagues stayed stayed in the royal lounge which is much nicer. The rooms were clean. The food was great, two choice of meat each meal and vegetables available. Excellent conference services at the sister company Chengeta Lodge. We had a chance to watch staff feeding the lions. The drinks are quite expensive including water which costs $2 a 500ml bottle

We received a voucher from family for a one nights stay, game drive and elephant rides.
We originally had been booked into Chengeta, but according to the friendly staff tey were on generator and we were the only people booked in and offered us an upgrade to the Pamuzinda Lodge. We agreed a travelled another ten minutes down the road and found the lodge. The reception staff were extremely polite and respectful. We stayed in the royal lounge and instantly felt at home. The cleanliness of the rooms was immaculate, not even a smear on the windows.
The staff were exceptional and their work ethic shone. It seemed everyone enjoyed their job and enjoyed people, which is rare. We booked our elephant rides for the same afternoon and quickly were whisked away by Dollar, one of yhe staff. We had a good elephant ride, well worth doing! Best experience of my life.
Later that evening we asked Dollar if we could have our dinner down by the lake and our table was set and ready upon arrival, candle and all.
The safari game drive we booked for the following morning and had a good two hours in the bush. Dollar is one of the greatest guides ive ever known, his knowledge of not only the game in the park but the birds also was magnificent. Another that enjoys his job.
The food was great, two choice of meat each meal and vegetables available. The table service is also immaculate.
All in all this place really is a 5* place, and well worthy of it. Thanks to the staff and the elephant guides and especially Dollar :)
We will retun one day in the future...

My friends and i stayed here on our first ever trip to Africa, let alone Zimbabwe. It was idyllic and we were so at home. I work in the hospitality industry and couldn't fault the staff there at all, they couldn't have done more to make our stay pleasant and relaxing. The activities are great, the facilities are great, the rooms are stunning.

We enjoyed ourselves so much that we are flying from the UK for our wedding here in April!

Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Just spoil yourself and book a garden suite!

Situated only an hour or so drive from Harare and beautifully set on the river. Staff were polite and very friendly....as was Geoffrey the giraffe! Arrived to find Zebra grazing on the lawn which was quite the greeting.

Food was excellent, lots of activities such as horse riding, canoeing, game drives and lots of wildlife.

It's hard to sum up the experience succinctly so I'll keep it brief. Absolutely loved it!
