“Beautiful Oasis Full of Love Open Arms and Character”
Reviewed 15 April 2014 via mobile

This place is amazing !!! We arrived late at night after a long day trip. I was traveling with special friends. We were greeted with a smile and attended to promptly !!!
We were shown our huts I've double with ensuite for my married friends and a twin with ensuite for me on my own !! The room was very clean including the ensuite facilities!!
I would recommend this to any travelers including single as it is safe and Marina n Dennis were loving and gracious hosts. They helped us plan our tours with suggestions of local sights to see. We followed the advice and had a true African experience with natural wonders n real animals!!!
After day of sightseeing we arrived back for an outdoor Brai?? A BBQ around a fire. Slept like a baby!!!!
Don't be deceived by the name, this I much more than the average backpackers, it is a sight to see on it's own, statues paintings gardens even a special place for photos!!!!!
Do not go past this jewel at Victoria Falls, I can't wait to go back !!!!

After weeks overlanding I upgraded from a campsite an ensuit room at the Victoria Backpackers. The room was big and spacious but the bathroom was very dirty. The shower flooded when I used it as there was so much hair in the drain that the water had no where to go. Once the cleaners had fixed this issue I was happy with the room.

The best part of this backpackers is the bar. We had two amazing nights and the party was wild. But for our fellow campers who went to bed early there were quite a few noise complaints the next day.

The Victoria Backpackers are centrally located and it's a short walk to shops, markets and the falls.

The staff were average and the wifi expensive but over all the party atmosphere of the bar and the excellent food at the cafe made up for the backpackers other failings.

We stayed in 2 rooms with the en suite bath and they were very nice. Cleanliness was par for this type of establishment; we only had a problem with one pillow smelling like someone's greasy head and the sheets smelled a little like they say wet for a bit too long.
The problem came with the service. The cafe on site has great food, unfortunately they acted like we were really bothering them when we tried to buy their food!! They have a menu posted, but even the times listed as available all cafe hours were not really available! Probably shouldn't be in food service if you don't like to feed people!!
But the biggest problem came the day we left. There was an issue with the price of a tour we had booked. The tour company gave us a price and VFB said they had no problem honoring that price so we could just book through them rather than directly with the company. That changed when we got there and they wanted us to pay full price. In the end we got a $50 discount instead of the $67 discount had we booked directly with the tour company. Okay, not a big deal. My friend wanted to clarify the details for future reference so we had everything straight for our next trip when we will be bringing a large group of people; the issue wasn't a problem for the 3 of us but when that number becomes 15-20 you want to have your details straight! At that point, my friend was alone trying to get clarification and the owner/manager blew up!! He started yelling at her and got in her face and was pointing and shaking his finger at her/in her face. I came onto the scene as this encounter was ending and he was angrily walking away from her. My friend looked at me, obviously shaken, and said "Did you hear that? I just got reamed!!" Then she told me what happened when I had walked away and she was alone with the receptionist and the owner/manager man. Unbelievable!!!! I thought the cafe lady was rude when we were trying to buy food from them, but this was beyond comprehension!! This was my second trip to Victoria Falls in the last year and I have never experienced anything close to this type of behavior! Everyone at all other establishments has been courteous and professional at all times. This is obviously not representative of the area in general, but just one horrible, isolated incident with one awful man suffering from serious anger management issues. Nice, cute establishment but if you like to eat and do not enjoy being verbally assaulted I highly advise you avoid VFB at all costs!!! It was a really horrible way to end our grueling 2 week medical mission trip! Fortunately, the rest of the people in Zim were beautiful and kind! We will definitely return with more helpers!! We will just steer completely clear of VFB!!!!

The place is sparse but clean. The owners (Marina and Dennis) are refurbishing, so it should get even better. It also has hot showers - like real hot showers, not lukewarm water. I saw some of the private rooms and they are cute - like little cottages or huts (I stayed in a dorm which was fine). The bathrooms for most accommodation are outside of the the rooms. And yes - there are tiny lizards and whatnot running through some of the rooms, but c'mon people - this is Africa. You also get to see really amazing stuff like baboons and warthogs "hanging out" on the streets.

The place was quiet when I went (low season and all), but staff, Linda in particular, were super friendly and helpful with any/all questions (e.g., I had to transit through Livingstone on my way out and had several questions about it because I wanted to stop off the morning of departure and do some other stuff).

It is a bit of a walk to town (20 minutes), but during the day it is fine. I was a solo female traveler and had no problems. At night, a taxi is $5 one-way. Town is very small, not like some happening crazy main street. From town, it's another 15 minutes to the entrance of Vic Falls.

For any activities (rafting, lion or elephant walks, etc.), the operators pick/drop you off directly from the place. Marina gives great advice about what activities are worth doing and helps you book them. She knows so much she seemed to actually get upset when other people had booked through tour companies prior to coming! Anyway, it's all part of the hospitality so you can of course book on your own ahead of time if you want (all activities/packages are pretty much same pricing), or just wait till you arrive and ask any questions you may have to Marina if you're not sure.

A charming place to stay that is cheap but not nasty. Hosts Marina and Dennis are the most helpful, hospitable people. They will do anything for you, including organising all of the activities to do at Vic Falls and giving good advice and recommendations. Rooms and bathrooms are basic but clean. We stayed in the Family room. The pool was welcome as when we stayed there it was over 40 degrees. The owners are busy refurbishing so it will only get even better.

Fantastic stay at the Vic. Falls Backpackers - Marina and Mike were just amazing hosts and made everything so simple. They sorted out all our activities with no hassle at all and even accommodated our early breakfast needs.

It is a 20 minute walk from town, but most activities will pick you up from your hostel if you don't have a car - so wasn't much of a problem.

Rooms are basic, and we didn't have a key for our door but there were no issues with security at all. The showers are hot and the pressure was good, and there were never any queues- so better than most hostels.

Ultimately this place has bags of character, lovely people and is great value.

Having read all the reviews about the lovely owners we realised that they were obviously not here during our stay as the people managing it were neither friendly or helpful and that was the most unpleasant part. The only really helpful person was Roger, one of the staff.

The only real positive is that the grounds are nice and it is peaceful

The rooms are open to the outside which is cute in one way but they have all kinds of bugs which was very unpleasant esp as mosquito net had holes in it. Also a terrible smell in one room of a dead animal. We didnt report it to managers as they were so generally unhelpful

If you want a fan, you have to ask at least 4 times for it.

The so-called en suite rooms have no privacy at all between bed and toilet so don't share with anyone you are not prepared to be intimate with in the most unpleasant way.
The breakfast was totally overpriced with stale bread and bad sausages. You can do much better in town or just buy your own stuff at the supermarket.
Not sure if they actually do cook lunch or dinner as there seemed some reluctance to do so.

There was never a boma fire during our stay contrary to their own ad and to all the positive reviews about it. We guess its because the owners were away and it was too much trouble for the managers

Any enquiries about activities or directions was like getting blood out of a stone. We also found we could get a much better deal and info if we went to town and negotiated the price directly with operators.
.
However The pool is in need of a clean.

There's no way we would recommend this place but perhaps if those missing owners return, it's a lot better.

We could have put up with the low quality of accommodation if only we were treated with friendliness and helpfulness.
