“An unexpected Gem with Manhattan prices!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 April 2014

We were quite apprehensive about visiting Zimbabwe - the airport arrival was chaotic and ever so primitive but Victoria Falls in June is magnificent and the hotel didn't disappoint. We fortunately had 2 refurbished rooms. They were still busy renovating the public areas during our visit and we loved reading about the hotel's history and seeing that its splendour still remains. She is definitely a grand old lady. We co-incided our visit with Full Moon and although we couldn't successfully photograph the lunar rainbow - it didn't matter. It was something to remember for the rest of one's life - something really special. The staff were so obliging and for our first night there we visited the buffet. We decided to eat on the Terrace after that. Quality is always better than quantity. Loved the breakfasts and the MCC that always accompanied them. I had a chat with the sommelier and he was so helpful. Told me where in South Africa I could buy a similar champagne stopper - thank you Vic Falls Hotel. Your staff are amazing, always smiling and very obliging. Breakfasts were a lot more imaginative that the evening buffets. The best bit about breakfasts and lunches was being able to see the awesome spray from the Falls and to feel the winter sunshine on one's face afterwards. Loved the abundance of warthogs on the hotel grounds as well. We visited the Falls 4 times in total - once is never enough and just in case we never return. The Flight of the Angels in a helicopter over the Falls is a given - one cannot visit Vic Falls and not experience it. We also recommend a ride on an elephant - it is a surreal experience. Back to accommodation - the only negative was a dirty, torn mosquito net on our bed. I found the bathroom a little chilly - it was winter after all. Underfloor heating would have been wonderful but it can't be expected in Zimbabwe. The sad side of Zimbabwe was the emaciated and begging people we encountered each time whilst walking to the Falls. My heart went out to them. The food on the terrace was superb, however the prices charged for bottled water exceeded what we'd spent in Manhattan, New York. We realise that Zimbabwe is under a lot of pressure - in every way - it's so sad - it is such a magnificent country.

Room Tip: A renovated one! Although perhaps they're all renovated now. I don't think a view of the...

We stayed at the VFH with a small group, from the time of arrival until departure all was excellent. The meals were again excellent with a great range of very tasty meals for breakfast and dinner. Our room was very well presented, with staff extremely helpful.

We spent first two nights of our honeymoon here

30 mins transfer from airport

It is a 5 minute walk from the shops which are mostly souvenir shops, but also some restaurants which we didn't eat in

On arrival we were greeted with lemonade and a facecloth. Our room overlooked the courtyard. Room had four poster bed, very clean and was really comfortable, decorated in old style. Our power in socket went but was fixed immediately when repirted.

The hotel itself is stunning, and extremely well kept. View of the Zambezi bridge, could see mist of falls from the terrace. One of my favourite memories of the trip is sitting down at end of garden listening to the sound of the falls!

We ate at the jungle junction, buffet style meal which was great! Brilliant choice and Traditionalshow happened every evening. We also ate lunch on the terrace which was beautiful. Can have afternoon tea 3-5, we didn't have time to get it but it looked fab! Can also eat at living stone restaurant but we loved jungle junction so much that we ate there both nights! Breakfast was also here, buffet style, excellent selection.

Enjoyed most of the cocktails on the menu, especially 'I presume'!

We did a walking tour and helicopter ride over the falls which would highly recommend! Also sunset cruise was lovely, with lots of drinks on offer! There is a wild horizons desk in the hotel who organise this, ours was pre booked however.

I also used the hairdressers, which was ok, and saw lovely manicures been done.

Service staff were all very pleasant and helpful!

If I am ever lucky enough to get to Victoria falls again I would definitely return to this hotel! It was amazing experience.

Room Tip: I would have lived a view overlooking the terrace! We were in 202 which was excellent location, cent...

Lovely old hotel takes you back to the past. Recently renovated public areas with lots of interesting history on the walls. Rooms are tired and in need of refurbishment but adequate. We booked a executive suite but it faced the reception area and not the falls so asked to be moved to a room that faced the falls which ended up being a standard room. Lovely pool area where you can have a lunch time barbecue in the shade. Stanley terrace has a great view and nice food, can recommend the afternoon tea. Livingstone restaurant has just been refurbished and is beautiful , reminds me of the dinning room at Gleneagles. Staff are very friendly and attentive. Great experience

We really enjoyed this hotel. We were a little apprehensive after reading some of the negative reviews on Trip Advisor, but we found it to be classic and charming. We loved the colonial décor. It has been newly renovated - the rooms were clean, beds comfortable and the shower was fantastic. The staff was attentive and helpful. The grounds spectacular (enjoyed watching the warthogs mow the lawn) and the view from the terrace was captivating. Loved it!

This is like stepping into the past - with both feet - at once! The epitome of Colonial slendour - a trip down time. And the views and the setting is incredible! That mighty Zambezi river thunders in a gorge with such might that it sends spray into the air teaching the clouds. From the Terrance where you should have a gin and tonic you can behold this site. Awesome experience. The service and staff are wonderful.

Pulling into this Hotel, you are immediately whisked into another time...Greeted with large smiles, and lemonade. Large open air public spaces, gardens, and a terrace that has one of the best views on the planet. Quiet, clean, comfortable rooms, with killer showers. Service was PERFECT! Lunch and Dinner, (think star lit sky), on the terrace was Fantastic. Great service in the Bar, and a fun, casual setting in the Jungle Junction. Great dinner buffet with local dishes throughout, in the Junction. Grab a couch down in the Jungle Junction, order a coffee, and watch the sunrise....it gets no better.
Zambesi boat tour, outstanding. Hippos galore! Helicopter ride over Victoria Falls, a MUST! Follow that with a walking tour of the falls, for an up close, and wet adventure.

For more than a century, The Victoria Falls Hotel has been the address of choice for Royal Families, statesmen, celebrities and discerning travellers as it occupies a fine location from which to explore the magical wonders of untamed Africa. From the thundering Victoria Falls at its threshold, to the big 5 that roam freely less than 5kms away, the “Grande Dame” provides an experience like no other. Less than a ten minute walk away from the Victoria Falls Rainforest, this is one hotel that can truly claim to be unique. The Victoria Falls Hotel’s grand Edwardian architecture evokes the spirit of a bygone era. The courtyard and entrance completed in 1915, with flowering shrubs, palms and stately mango trees picturesquely reflected in the water lily ponds. The chic elegance of the marble floored reception area sets the tone for the style and sophistication synonymous with The Victoria Falls Hotel. Many a guest has marveled at the magnificent views seen from The Victoria Falls Hotel and the experience begins with the sun rising beneath the mist of one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Combining old-fashioned, traditional elegance with warm and welcoming decor, the main lounge provides a perfect backdrop for relaxing with friends, whilst the Bulawayo Room offers serenity and seclusion in surroundings of exceptional comfort and luxury. There’s a well-appointed curio shop specializing in colonial memorabilia. The Palm Lounge, bright and cool, is a quiet and secluded corner in which to relax, read or write. Throughout its many corridors and alcoves, the hotel’s long and fascinating history is depicted through photographs, posters and artistic impressions, reflecting the past glories of the empire. The quaint Chapel, built in 1929, has been the venue of many weddings and The Victoria Falls Hotel remains a favourite destination for honeymooners from around the world. Echoing its glorious past, The Victoria Falls Hotel’s traditional rooms and suites are truly a 5 star experience. Style and sophistication are trademarks of the hotel’s executive suites, which are luxuriously appointed with decor being warm, inviting and rich with tradition. Deluxe guest rooms are spacious, well-appointed and furnished in traditional Edwardian style with an "out of Africa" feel. All rooms are air-conditioned with every modern amenity including digital satellite television, direct dial telephone and a personal safe. Cast-iron, roll-top bath tubs in the stables wing rooms and suites turn the bathroom into a haven of sumptuous relaxation. All three restaurants have ideal locations, making dining around the hotel a memorable experience. Lavish buffets at the casual Jungle Junction restaurant are but one of the many choices for breakfast and dinner. Stanley’s Terrace is an excellent option for light meals throughout the day and is an absolute must for the infamous High Tea served every afternoon, with spectacular views of The Victoria Falls Bridge and the Falls themselves. Later, enjoy the hotel’s legendary cocktails or a gin and tonic in Stanley’s Bar while listening to the roar of the mighty Falls. Evening dining at the open-air jungle Junction restaurant offers an unforgettable experience with a fusion of flavours of Africa. Entertainment from ethnic groups epitomises the spirit of Africa; Jungle Junction is the ideal venue for incentive groups. Enjoy dinner and dancing in the elegant, Edwardian Livingstone Room, with classic a la carte and table d’hote menus. Whilst the Livingstone Room reflects the century old hotel’s style of grandeur and opulence, the dress code has been slightly relaxed for the convenience of the guest and it is no longer essential for gentlemen to wear jacket and tie for dinner. A fine selection of wines and liqueurs are available to complement the chef’s wonderfully innovative creations. Cool off and enjoy the splendour of the glorious colonial swimming pool set amongst the beautiful landscaped gardens, overlooking the famous Victoria Falls Bridge with the Batoka Gorge below. Massage treatments are available in the airy gazebos located around the poolside or in the tranquility of the hotel’s gardens. The Pullman Suite and the Centenary Room are well-appointed with exquisite antique furnishing, adding a new dimension of sophistication to conferencing. Suitable for meetings of between 8 and 40 people, conference packages (including spouses’ programs) are available. The Victoria Falls are approximately 1,690 metres wide with an estimated 550 million litres of water per minute cascading over a 111 metre chasm. It must be highlighted that Zimbabwe has 16 out of the 19 prime viewing spots and is where you will find the "untamed" Victoria Falls Rainforest with its many winding pathways and trails. In 1855 David Livingstone, arguably the first European to see the awesome Falls, remarked "scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight." The Victoria Falls have been declared a World Heritage Site and enjoy special conservation status. ... more   less
