A'Zambezi River Lodge is a little further out from the town centre - about a 5-10 minute drive. The hotel has a great view of the Zambezi River and often has wildlife (boars, monkeys and sometimes hippos) coming to the grounds. It's also walking distance to most of the (sunset) cruise jetties.

*Pro's*
1. Nice grounds with plants and wildlife.
2. Easy stroll to the sunset cruise jetties.
3. Decent breakfast spread.
4. Simple service.
5. Entertainment in evenings - over dinner, next to the fireplace.
6. Reasonably priced dinner menu (a la carte). Mains between USD 10 - 30 ish. Buffet USD35 per person.
7. Security is good - they did not allow visitors into the compound of the resort without me going out to welcome them in.
8. The grounds are well kept and manicured. Great for photo ops.

*Con's*
1. Service is lacking. I had to change my keys a total of 5 times (3 at night, twice the next day) before some body was sent to give a more permanent fix to the lock. Front office team did not feel warm and welcoming - it was really more transactional.
2. If you are avoiding hotel food, its USD10 per way to town for dinner via Taxi (last shuttle is at 1700hrs)
3. Speaking of shuttle, there's no clear indication where the shuttle stops are. The bus is not marked with the hotel logo, so you have to check and keep an eye out. Lots of pedlars wait around the shuttle pick up points. This is quite annoying.
4. Hotel is aging - do not expect spick and span. It is however, what you get for the price you pay in an area with limited options. Our mosquito netting was torn, so it was only partially effective.
5. Bring your own shampoo and body wash - the ones provided were not effective in cleaning and did not have a pleasant fragrance (this is subjective of course).
6. If pool towels run out, check with front office. There is no one who regularly checks for towel supply and take beverage orders.

*Other tips*
1. Tested a double bed and two twin beds - the twin beds are a little sunken. So be sure to test the beds once you check in if this bothers you.
2. Bring insect repellent - because of the location, there are plenty of bugs and mosquitoes.
3. The dinner wait staff sometimes dropped hints for tips. So eat out if this bothers you too.

Room Tip: Corner room (125 i think) has a probably, the best view :)

The location of the Lodge was absolutely perfect, by the banks of the mighty Zambezi river.Great welcome by the staff and fast and efficient check in process. Room was comfortable , wifi available as well. Our focus was not the room, but the serene ,relaxing enviroment , away from the hectic city life. River cruise was so relaxing, seeing the wildlife ,enjoying the sunset and drinks.Boat cruise crew very welcoming.Great food and wide range to choose from on the breakfast set up.Quiet, relaxing pool area, balconies whilst seeing warthogs on the surrounding grounds.Free shuttle to the Falls and town. Stayed for two nights and enjoyed every moment. There is need to spruce up the entertainment, need more vibrant dancers like the ones encountered at the airport.I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants a weekend get away from the busy ,noisy city life.

Room Tip: Great view of the Zambezi river

I loved every minute of this place - from the first minute I stepped off onto the grounds, I felt at home. Such friendly people. Genuinely welcoming. I would recommend this happy, laid back place to anyone. Being a vegetarian, I was patiently shown all the dishes I could have and one of my favourite vegetables from home, morogo, was made for me when I didn't see it one night at dinner.

River cruises, heli flight over the Falls, game drives, elephant safaris, you can do it all. Very comfortable rooms and WiFi throughout the whole hotel.

I left a piece of my soul here.....

This hotel has a fantastic location right on the river. Our room was a garden view room, but after the garden you can see the river. The rooms are quite small with just enough room to move around the bed. The ensuite has a bath and separate shower. The decor needs a bit of work as it looks a bit tired. Our bed had a good mosquito net around it but if we were not careful closing it it came straight off the rail. The room had a safe but the safe was not attached to anything so it could have been picked up and walked off with. We had large patio door windows with a mosquito screen but large holes had been cut in the screen as handles. The large balcony has nice tables and chairs on it, but is not private as all the balconies interconnect. This is not a problem as most people do not use their balconies but you must remember to lock that door.
The buffet breakfast is very expensive at $30, but they offer a la carte options as well. The scrambles is much better value at $8, this is scrambled eggs, 2 toasts, bacon and an apple. Service can be slow and most waiters need more training. The dinner buffet is $35 which is better value, but again the a la carte is cheaper. A bottle of wine is $30. The quality of the food at dinner is acceptable, but not brilliant. We decided to eat there on the 2 nights of our stay as other restaurants are a taxi ride away, nothing is close enough to walk to. The hotel does have entertainers in the evening but they are not very good.
The hotel has a nice swimming pool area. The grounds are open and in the evening monkeys and warthogs are common visitors. Elephants and hippos are less common visitors but there was evidence of recent visits.
Trips can be booked at this hotel. The hotel does have a free shuttle service to the town and the falls which is very useful.
