While I admit that the travel company picked this hotel, I can only say that they made a good choice for a visitor to Victoria Falls.

The more well-known Victoria Falls hotel may or may not be marginally closer to the falls, but the Ilala Lodge wins out on motivated and helpful staff, and somehow also gives a homely old-worlde atmosphere, from the pleasant lobby to the outdoor dining tables looking out towards the falls over gardens sometimes invaded by a family of baboons or warthogs.

Most of the rooms are cleverly built below the public area of restaurant, bar and pool, but are at ground level, with french windows opening onto the 'wild' garden giving the impression of being in the bush.

evening meals by candlelight, inside or on the terrasse in comfy wicker chairs are a joy, though the menu is relatively short and does not change every night, so can become a bit restrictive after a few days. Kudu (look it up) and crocodile were excellent. Breakfasts were pretty good, especially fruit, nuts and seeds etc, though coffee might be better.

The pool was small and not perhaps a major feature, perhaps not too important with so many sights to visit: the falls, the gorges, markets, train and tram excursions, bungee jumping, zipwires, helicopter flights and river cruises etc.

we would go back again if chance allows.

Room Tip: rooms 1-9 closer to the lobby and restaurant, but rooms above 9 closer to the bar.

We just spent 3 days at Ilala. Thoroughly enjoyed it. It has a relaxing atmosphere and is not too large. It is very convenient and the best of the VF hotels. The meals in the restaurant were of high standard, and the service was faultless.

Room Tip: The front rooms are the pick.

we choose this hotel because of the closeness to the falls. we could see the falls from our room and it was only a 10 minutes walk to the falls. The hotel was clean and nicely appointed. the staff was very attentive .We had breakfast with our stay and it was abundant and delicious. the view of the falls mist from our room was spectacular. It was during a full moon so we were extra lucky. hotel was a great value and very pleasant. the pool was very refreshing after a day at the park

Room Tip: room 32 or 32

Staying at the Ilala was a perfect way to end our 3 weeks in southern Africa. It is small and intimate, beautiful rooms. My room was on the lawn and every evening a family of warthogs came to graze right outside the door. Victoria Falls was only a 15 minute walk and shopping was within 5 minutes. There is a service on the property to help with reserving tours and confirming flights which is very nice. The hotel restaurant is very good - we ate all of our meals there - and the pool is a great place to relax. You can see the mist and hear the roar of the Falls from the patio.
