My husband and I flew to Victoria Falls, after four days in Cape Town, May 26th and arrived at Ilala Lodge very tired from the early flight, long line for immigration into Zimbabwe at the airport, and also the very last ones from our flight. Yet the Thompson van and greeter were waiting for us and whisked us off to the Lodge.
The front desk welcomed us warmly and Noah, took us to our room to settle in and it was nice to always see him around. We were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary so we were surprised with a bottle of champagne in our room! Our travel gal must have told them for the entire staff seemed to know.
We had a lovely candle light dinner outside on the patio that evening and they even decorated our dessert plate with Happy 50th Wedding Anniversary! What else could they next? When we returned to our room later, the bath tub was filled with bubble bath and flower petals floating on top! Our bed had been turned down and had flower petals scattered all over the bed! That is excellent PR and we thank you for that! Our room was spacious and plenty of space to spread out. We had complimentary tea and coffee as well in the room, and bottled water. When we used the bottled water, fresh ones would appear each morning so we always had a fresh supply.
We met a lovely young lady who is in charge of the dining room and her name escapes me but I think it was Kudsey, or something like that. If you meet her, she is very warm and so easy to visit with, as all the staff were for us.
Our room was number 27, behind the pool, very quiet and had a gorgeous view out on the gardens and landscape. It opened onto a veranda with a table and chair, although we didn't use it much. We could see the mist from the falls rising from our window and the sunrise was awesome with the sun shining on it. I will post a photo to show. We could hear the falls from our room, and the lodge, as well, and it was wonderful to hear that thunder during the night. They never turned off the falls at night either!
The food was delicious and we had a beautiful breakfast buffet every morning, which was included in our package. Everyone at the lodge was so warm, friendly and helpful. It was a wonderful place to relax when we weren't on the go.
Of course we toured the falls one morning, which is another story. And also went shopping at Elephant Village. The gift shop at the lodge is small but nice and Tracy was very helpful.
I can't imagine another place as nice as the lodge and we are so happy we were able to stay here. It had all the qualities of a 5 star hotel but with a family feeling, warm staff and everything was so comfortable.
A special thank you to Thembi, Guest Relations Manager, who wrote us a lovely note and probably had so much to do with our romantic stay. It truly was memorable and we thank you all!
This added to our trip of the lifetime in Africa!

Room Tip: I had asked for a room behind the pool, which was number 27, since I had read the pool motor could b...

Our room had a view to the garden with a small verandah with table and chairs. The air conditioner was appreciated. The outside dining areas were the real feature of this property. They overlooked the national park and mist from the falls could be seen. You could eat inside, under the verandah or outside under umbrellas. Meals were reasonably priced and delicious. The pool bar also served light meals all day and had an assortment of comfortable furniture. The pool also had day lounges. The location of this hotel is good as it is central to most areas. There is a waiting area, near reception, for tourists waiting to be picked up for day trips. This was the only place in our 3 week African stay that wanted to charge us for bottled water, after the first complimentary bottle!

After being on safari to 16 days in May 2014 it was lovely to relax at the lodge. A large room with a view of the garden with warthog running around the lawn. Could also hear the Falls from hear and see the spray.
Went and had a look at a room at Victoria Falls Hotel and Ilala is much more spacious and better value for money. Breakfast and lunch on the terrace was lovely.

Room Tip: I don't think it really matters. They all have a good outlook.

We were hot and cold about our stay at Ilala Lodge. The hotel itself is wonderful. The setting is lush with gardens throughout and the rooms and accommodations wonderful. The the staff really dampened the experience. English is a second language yet more difficult there than at most places we visited. And the staff was simply often unfriendly. They questioned what we wanted, were not service oriented, and on and on. The location, however, was ideal.

Would have preferred to stay a the Victoria Falls Hotel. . .

The staff, the amenities and the rooms were all first rate. The live lawnmowers-read warthogs-are an added bonus. While we were there one diner had a bit of his breakfast stolen by a baboon. He (the guest) was thrilled but there is a staff member who keeps watch while diners are eating to prevent these occurrences. Even the wildlife knows that the food is excellent. Would definitely stay here and recommend it to friends.

Room Tip: As this was a package of safari stays we don't know the actual costs. But everything about the...

At $300/ night US, had great expectations and they were met. The location is ideal...walking distance to the Falls, walking distance to town, and close proximity to animals as they graze at dawn and dusk. We could even see the mist from the Falls from our room.

The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful in making changes to our transportation arrangements.

The room itself was very pleasant, although we would have preferred a king bed to 2 singles (should have asked sooner) and had both a tub and shower. It was nice having a sitting area outside overlooking the garden.

The food in the restaurant was outstanding. The cold breakfast buffet had lots of great choices and the hot breakfast menu was satisfying. (You help yourself to drinks and the cold buffet, and are given a menu for the hot buffet while eating. Then your order is brought. ) It all takes a little while, and so if you have other arrangements, it's important to order quickly.

Given the high hotel prices in Victoria Falls generally, I recommend this establishment and would choose it again.

This hotel is of the old world. The rooms are up to date but not over the top. The staff is over the top friendly.

The location is in the middle of town. It is about a 15 walk to the Falls. I would say it is safe to walk to/from the falls during the day but NOT at night. We had a guide arranged that transported us and told us about the falls as we walked through the falls.....well worth it!

There are no restaurants not connected to a hotel in town. The shopping is limited in town. There are warthogs and baboons everywhere. If you ignore them when walking around they will ignore you too. Don't feed the animals...EVER.

We had a BIG and I mean BIG surprise one night. We opened the back curtains and there was a HIPPO!!!! The cameras came out and we shot a lot of pics of the hippo as he ate his way across the lawn.... we did not open the doors..just the windows to get a good shot.
