“Great hotel for Vic.Falls”
Reviewed 9 January 2009

Wonderful hotel especially considering the conditions in Zimbabwe. The hotel tries to maintain the elegance and comfort of another age. Try to get a room on the upper floor as the views of the grounds and of the mist rising from the falls are very nice.

  • Liked — Comfort, convenience to Falls and to town
  • Disliked — Nothing -- problems as with internet were due to conditions in Zimbabwe

Chose the Ilala for a one night stay before heading to Botswana. It was a good choice and if trying to describe it, I would say it is equivalent to an upper grade Best Western. Very nice public areas and dining room too. It is not a Hilton (which I didn't want anyway), but still was very suitable and comfortable for us, and it was very convenient to walk to the Falls. The rooms pretty large, patio doors to the lawns, good beds, good bathroom, staff very friendly and accomodating. Several group tours were staying at the hotel when we were there. We felt safe at all times. So would recommend for a stay if you are looking for a comfortable place without the bells and whistles of some of the more luxurious lodges in the area.

The lodge has very friendly staff and a good location. It certainly is a good value. Outdoor seating is a highlight. We found Wild Horizons (the white water rafting/elephant back safari/sunset cruise/falls tour company) and this lodge to be very organized and resilient in the face of tremendously difficult times for Zim under Mugabe.

We stayed at the Ilala for two nights as part of a larger safari trip. The Ilala is spacious, well-maintaned, green, safe, comfortable, and well-supplied.

The outdoor dining was the highlight of staying at the Ilala. You could see the mist rising from the falls and watch the local warthogs graze on the lawn. Food and drinks very good, room comfortable. The bathroom was on the industrial-looking side, but plenty of towels and hot water.

If you want to eat at the Ilala, which I recommend, make sure to reserve a table early. What looks like an empty restaurant quickly fills with large groups. Make sure to wear mosquito repellant too. The bar/longue area at the very far end of the hotel is quite nice as well.

Meals and incidentals are incredibly expensive, on par with London hotels, so check twice before you spend $30 to have two pairs of pants washed. They did have an internet connection, which was handy.

Everyone on the staff from the front desk crew to the person delivering candy in the afternoon was very kind and helpful. We would stay here again.

We stayed at the Ilala in December. Beautiful views of green lawn and forest towards the falls.
Service was friendly and professional.
Security was great.
Food was abundant and excellent and served inside or outside on the wonderful terrace.
Rooms were comfortable with porch.

After some nervousness about traveling to Zimbabwe to see the falls, the stay at the Ilala helped get rid of all that anxiety. The hotel was spotless, the setting wonderful, and the people were down to early, friendly, and always willing to help. Our room overlooked the spray of the falls in the distance. Food was great... breakfast was good and filling and dinners were a treat. Close proximity to the falls is an added bonus. The number of folks hitting you up to buy things on the street gets to be a bit much, but times are tough in Zim right now so it is understandable.
Big thumbs up for the friendliness of the people in Zim and the Ilala Lodge was a nice place to spend a great trip to the falls.

I really enjoyed my stay at the ilala lodge, the staff were so friendly and made your stay fun. The meals were excellent, especially the freshly cooked omelettes for breakfast. Breakfast and evening meals outside on verandah were great. The provisions and facilities in the room were really good. I did stay one night at the victoria falls safari lodge although setting very pleasant there it didn't have the same nice feel that the ilala lodge had.
