We stayed at this hotel Oct 21-23, 2010, finishing up a Botswana safari. Our room was very clean, the air conditioning was sooo welcome, the service was fine, and the food was very good. The travel desk helped us with sceduling an evening river cruise. We were surprised at the maintenance and pleasing appearance of the hotel and the grounds. We walked to the falls on our own, and had no problems. Our tour operator had arranged our road transfer from Kasane to the hotel and our transfer to the airport at the end of our stay, but the hotel actually handled the transfer in their hotel van.

I had a four night stay at the Ilala. What a wonderful place. I was upgraded to a suite which was breathtaking and so appreciated. The grounds were so well maintained and the furnishings just right. The staff were so accommodating and with lovely people like Chennai, Basil, Shona and many many more. I travelled alone but never felt alone as the atmosphere was lovely. Every time I walked back in I was warmly greeted with "welcome back". Breakfast in a league of its own but left you filled for a long while!! So close to all amenties in town and 10 min walk to falls. Cant wait to visit again. Until next time xxxx

Ideally situated, Ilala Lodge provided all the comforts and amenities you could wish for.

The rooms are clean and well furnished and have views over the African bush towards the falls.

The restaurant and bar area is idyllic and you have a choice as to whether you wish to dine inside or outside. The food is excellent and the staff attentive and friendly.

Special compliments go to Simanga and Lucky at the Bar who served drinks professionally and in style and also to Peter at Reception who did his utmost to fulfil guests' wishes. Everyone else also deserves praise and compliments.

We’ve recently returned from an overland trip from South Africa through Zimbabwe. Being our first overland trip through Africa we didn’t realise that our insurance only covered us in Zimbabwe and did not extend into Zambia. We were in a quandary with what to do having pre-booked and paid for accommodation in Zambia. Friends in Harare phoned through to Ilala lodge who kindly allowed us to leave our vehicle in their parking area for the 5 nights we were in Zambia.

On arrival at the hotel the front desk staff were incredibly friendly and helped us to make transport arrangements for the border crossing and to our destination in Zambia. Over the course of the stay, we popped in from time to time to retrieve items from our vehicle – each time being warmly greeted by both the security and hotel staff.

If they treat non-guests like this I'd love to stay to see how they treat those that stay and will one day when I return to Vic Falls!

We stayed at the Ilala Lodge during part of our honeymoon at Victoria Falls. This hotel was beautiful and was within walking distance of the majestic Victoria Falls. We could see the mist from the falls and hear the distant thunder of the water from our balcony. The rooms are comfortable and spacious, and the staff went out of their way to add personal touches and handwritten notes congratulating us on our marriage. We also want to thank the bartender, Lucky, for his great service during our stay. The hotel restaurant features a great young chef, Camilla Howes, who we read about in "Skyhost", Zimbabwe Air's magazine, on our plane trip up from Jo'burg. The dinners at the hotel restaurant are great, but make sure to make a reservation. There are some nights when small tour groups come from other hotels to dine at Ilala, so there can be limited seating available some nights. There is seating both in the main dining room or out on the beautiful patio surrounded by meticulously maintained gardens and lush greenery. The area around the hotel is safe, and there is also a security guard present at the front entrance. There are also a few banks, a post office, and the Air Zimbabwe office located within a few hundred feet from the front of the hotel. The greatest surprise was that we saw 2 wild elephants, 4 warthogs, and a couple of baboons in along the paths on our short walk from the hotel to the falls. The hotel rooms include a hairdryer (no converter needed) . I also LOVED the effective citrus-scented mosquito repellent cream the hotel provided in the bathroom amenities. Some of the daily activities we enjoyed included a sunset steam train ride ( train station is a couple of blocks from the hotel-includes snacks & champagne at sunset on the Victoria Falls bridge); a Zambezi river dinner cruise, an elephant ride, and an AMAZING half day river safari at Chobe National Park in Botswana (driver comes to get you and transports you back to the hotel-make sure you GET A MULTIPLE ENTRY VISA AT THE AIRPORT IN ZIMBABWE if you plan to go back and forth across the border-Botswana did not charge us to go to Chobe Nat'l Park for a day trip, but Zimbabwe may charge you for another Visa to come back-totally worth it though to see all the game). Another tip is to be aware that the helicopter tours above Victoria Falls have become very popular, so there is the frequent hum of helicopters at the Ilala Lodge that can sometimes start around 9 in the morning. Not a big deal for tour groups which usually get an early start, but can be an annoying wake up call for honeymooners like us or those that like to sleep in a little later or take afternoon naps. The hotel is very close to the curio markets and downtown Victoria Falls. If you have time, walk to the two big grocery stores to look around-one is called TM and the other is the Spar. Great fun looking at the local produce, bakery items, and prepared foods.

We would agree that the hotel is well run and a good base for a visit to the falls.
Unfortunately, the hotel is located next to the local Club. We were there on a Friday and Saturday night so come 10pm the sounds of the falls are replaced by the house music played by the Club until 3 am with the usual human party noise to accompany it.

The managemnt were sympathetic and are trying to deal with it. We would recommend you check whether the the Club is operating before confirming your booking.

For that reason alone unfortunately we could not recommend the lodge as we expect there would be quieter locations elsewhere.

We visited the Victoria Falls hotel for a drink with friends and that might be a better option depending on the neighbours!

We have just returned from four weeks travelling through South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and finally Zimbabwe where we made Ilala Lodge our base in Victoria Falls. We had researched the Lodge on the Internet before leaving Australia and had high expectations on arrival. We were not disapointed. Check-in was very friendly and efficient with smiles everywhere from staff, particularly Peter and Thondo. Our room was clean, with decent size bathroom including bath, comfy bed and it overlooked delightful gardens where monkeys played most mornings. Ilala Lodge seemed to be central to everything, including the famous Falls, whose roar we could hear from our room, enticing us to get out there exploring, just as soon as we could. Breakfast on the terrace beside the gardens was a great way to start the day. A simple but tasty buffet did the trick for us and the cooked to order omelettes were hard to pass up too. We were out and about nearly every day and only had lunch once at Ilala - the burgers a sight to behold. The choice at dinner was an inside table or outside on the terrace affair, which we chose as the evenings were very tranquil. The a la carte menu was varied with some local offerings - the warthog a standout. Pre-dinner drinks at the bar with barman 'Lucky' mixing the cocktails was a delight. And the South African Sauvignon Blanc we enjoyed with our evening meals was very mooreish. We must mention Chenai in Guest Relations, who we found to be very helpful and she always enquired if evereything was to our satisfaction. During our stay at Ilala we did a guided walk of Victoria Falls plus a helicopter ride over the Falls, walked with lions (just do it, it's amazing), had an elephant ride, a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River, walked down to the bridge over the Zambezi River that connects Zimbabwe with Zambia (there's a bungy jump there) and explored the community where all the locals live. We found the township of Victoria Falls to be very safe and we walked around everywhere. For us, Ilala Lodge was a wonderful place to stay, with super friendly staff, elegant decor together with all the paintings and memorabilia from the David Livingstone era plus a great location. Our stay could perhaps be summed up by- 'it was hard to say goodbye'.
