“Relaxing place to escape the hustle of the Falls”
Reviewed 31 July 2012

We had a great stay which we thoroughly enjoyed. Its a great small boutique hotel about 20 mins drive outside of Victoria Falls town. With its location, it comes across as a small safari-lodge, an impression fostered by the reserve and waterhole which regularly attracts elephants, zebra, giraffe, babboons and buffalo - however, note that game rides in the reserve cost extra. Breakfast on the terrace was a treat, with a great range of buffet items, good coffee and hot meals cooked to order. The lodge has a comfy laid-back feel, with bar and lounges to simply pass away the time, and a very nice pool and garden to kick back and watch the wildlife and amazing birds. The theme of the hotel is spruced-up Victorian with numerous nods to modern day requirements - pictures and curios relating to Stanley and Livingstone are everywhere and are in keeping with the theme. Rooms are very spacious suites, with ac, tv and tea and coffee facilities present. Dinners were three course, fixed menu but the quality of the cooking was really very good and always with veggie / fish options available as needed, and some really good value, excellent South African wines to enjoy too. As others have remarked, there is a short drive into town for the attractions of the falls, but the hotel arranges three free round trips per stay, and they are really friendly and helpful when it comes to booking attractions or dinner reservations at other hotels or restaurants in town. This is not really a kids hotel - small ones would probably be a little bit bored, but then I suspect that this is not really the clientele they are looking for...for people looking for a really relaxing break away from the hurly-burly of the falls, then this is a great place to consider.

We enjoyed our stay. Just sitting on the deck overlooking the waterhole we saw elephant, baboons, warthogs and various antelope. Rooms are large and clean, service is excellent. It is away from town so you need to shuttle in, but they take you in.

We recently were lucky enough to have stayed in this beautiful resort. The setting is unique - every attention to detail has been paid to fitting out the room which includes all you'd expect and extras. The staff are professional and obliging and all meals excellent. Situated next to the national park. With two water pools - the animals that wander in over the duration of your stay are never ending and magical. We spent over an hour watching three elephants come to visit and drink at the pool only metres away from us! A hotel shuttle bus runs you into the village and to the river and falls. We will NEVER forget this beautiful place and our stay. Thanks to all concerned.

Room Tip: All rooms overlook the open space park - there is no bad room on site!

We stayed at the Stanley and Livingstone for three days during April and enjoyed every minute. The staff are extremely attentive and nothing too much trouble. Pressure the mini bus Driver was just lovely, so helpful and knowledgeable about the wild life. The Bungalow suite we stayed in was first class. And we would like to thank the Restaurant staff for the very special evening they gave us on our wedding Anniversary. Definitely above all our expectations. Thank you to all the staff for making our stay so special.

We were lucky enough to be upgraded to the Stanley and Livingstone as the sister camp, Old Ursula was being refurbished. The customer support from the Rani team was quite excellent. Everything about the place was perfect and just how you would imagine a luxury African lodge to be. The setting was fantastic with the lodges and main buildings all overlooking the bush and water hole.
We could not fault the service with friendly attentive staff but not over bearing.
The rooms were very large with fantastic bathrooms.
The only issue for some people might be the distance from the town and falls but the hotel offer an efficient transfer so no real issues.
If I ever got the chance again I would certainly stay there again.

This is the perfect place to escape all the hustle and bustle of modern day living. It's so peaceful and quiet. The setting is stunning - it really is 'Out of Africa". The individual cottages, are beautifully decorated, the bathrooms roomy and it's just perfect. The staff are very accommodating and do really try to make your stay one to remember. We wish we had stayed for an extra night 3rd night instead of two, as we were so busy with our early game drive starts and walking with the lions, that a morning to be lazy and a relax by the pool would have been perfect. We would go back again, and if you want to stay somewhere for a special anniversary, a quiet, peaceful resort then this is the place. Heavenly! I have read previous comments about the food. Having done a safari in Nambia, and stayed in similar types of accommodation, you have to remember that this is Africa, and not South Africa, and often the ingredients we take for granted in 5* accommodation in Europe are just not available or very hard to come by, and the chefs improvise and just do the best they can.

Room Tip: Avoid smoking floors/lift and rooms looking on to roads or above restaurants.

The property itself is amazing with wonderful all suite accommodation and lovely grounds with a great pool.
We had a great welcome from Moline who was very helpful throughout our stay. The staff were also very pleasant but the thing that let it down was the food which did not live up to the lodge's five star feel. We tried it on the first night with a view to eating there on the last night as a special meal for my wife's 50th birthday. The meal was very ordinary and for subsequent nights we decided to eat in Victoria Falls town. We had stayed at Ilala Lodge just before our stay and the food was much better although the lodge itself was not as high a standard as Stanley and Livingstone. Also the food at the Victoria Falls Hotel was excellent.
When we returned in the evening to Stanley and Livingstone we were made to feel quite uncomfortable when we said we weren't eating at the lodge -almost like naughty children.
A new management company has taken over recently and they had a few people staying to find out,we were told by one of their staff, why bookings were poor.
Because this lodge is ten to fifteen minutes drive from the town then it would make sense to eat there but the food has to reach the standards in town which are much higher.
A great shame as the lodge itself is wonderful. A small additional point is that on booking, Rani Resorts, the management company, said they'd pass on the message to the lodge itself that it was my wife's 50th (maybe a bottle of wine or similar in the room which most hotels would arrange?) Sadly, nothing happened which would indicate they are not really on the ball.
