Hotel Tropico
Ranked #2 of 41 Hotels in Luanda
Reviewed 19 September 2011

The Tropico was a surpizingly decent hotel. This was my first trip to Angola staying for approximately 5 days. The rooms are spartan, but very clean. Internet was good. The lounge is a bit small but it was clearly the place to bring your laptop and two cell phones (those who truly know how to do business there, carry two) and to quaff a few beers. Power outages occured a number of times. Tip - get a room on a lower floor if this is troblesome for you. The restaurant was fine. Decent breakfast buffet and a compact menu for lunch and dinner. The bottom line for me was that the hotel was centrally located. Luanda is a city of 5 million that was built to accommdate 500,000. Even the shortest of drives in a car can take hours. The ability to walk to offices (be sure the local company you are visiting meets you at the hotel) or drive a short distance is an absolute must. Safety was not a concern, but that's my perspective as a male and being constantly in the company ofthose who speak Portuguese. And going to and from the airport, use EcoTur. Be sure when you arrive at the airport after a long haul flight to NOT jump into the first taxi you see and leave the airport - that's imperative. Book EcoTur (www.eco-tur.com) in advance or ensure your Angolan host arranges for a driver. Overall, again a pleasant suprise, the hotel and the city. There is no doubt that Luanda is a "happening place" with an amazing amount of infrastructure construction and a government that appears genuinelly putting petrodollars earned from offshore oil and gas into rebuilding the country after a 25+ year civil war ended in 2002. PS Make sure your have your certificate of vaccination for yellow fever with you (keep it in your passport).

It is one of the best hotel in Luanda, however no amenities or services.... Rooms are so small and very expensive (375 $/night)... A la carte restaurant is better than open buffet... No Muslim food... Small reception area... Helpfull staff... Prepayment at reservation...

The hotels generally in Luanda give poor service and are over priced, this is changing as more hotels get completed.

This is the third time I have stayed in the Tropico, in my opinion it is better than average, but not up to International standards.

Check-in/out is always slow and complicated, food is OK but not exceptional and WiFi is limited in rooms.

Bar area is a good meeting place for visiting Expats and Local based Expats.

One of the better Hotels (for now), they are going to need to improve to keep future business as new hotels become available.

Stayed at the Tropico for two weeks. Rooms ok and food good but far from cheap! Location was OK and there are a few decent restaurants and bars around. A decent little place across the road and down the hill which sells great food and good draft beer. Also, further down and on the same side at Tropico a good asian place. Free WiFi! Pool empty at time of our stay.

Room Tip: Best to get rear view rooms. Front rooms overlook hospital and building site

This hotel is a good representative of Luanda. Staggeringly slow and inefficient check-in and -out. Unreliable payment process with photocopies of credit card (although no problem to get the (or maybe a...) copy back at check-out). The hotel itself looks very dated even though it isn't that old. The staff and management is relying on that the low competition will keep them in business despite the lack of service and maintenance.
The room itself did not impress either. A very noisy AC and an uncomfortable bed with very hard pillows together with an unreliable WLAN did nothing to promote Luanda nor the hotel.
I did not have breakfast at the hotel which I think was a good idea. If you have transport I'd recommend to have dinner elsewhere as well, eg along the beach to the south where there are some quite good restaurants.
On the other hand, as other reviewers have noted, there might be difficult to find a better hotel option in Luanda.

I booked a two nights stay at USD 398 / night. At check-in, I was told that they charged USD 700 for the same room a year ago. So, I suppose I got a good deal then.

I contacted the hotel to arrange a pick up from the airport. They just advise that they don't offer the service. I wasn't too fussed about this, however at the airport I found out that there are no taxis in Luanda! In these circumstances you would imagine that hotels would arrange transportation. But, when the demand is strong enough, you don't really need to worry how and if your guests make it to the hotel.

The check-in process was slow as the staff was multitasking, and not really concentrating to finish anything properly. At the check-in, they copy your credit card on both sides, which leaves room for fraud. Perhaps purely coincidentally my credit card company contacted me a week after saying my credit card is now closed and they will send a fresh one with a new card number.

The room was a very basic one, but clean. The wifi worked for the first day, after that there was no connection. Despite the room being clean, I saw a bedbug in the room, a colleague spotted cockroach. I was not bitten at nights as I left lights on in the bathroom and kept the door closed at all times, others were not so lucky.

The breakfast and lunch buffet at the hotel was good, did not have any problems after eating there.

Check-out was equally labourious as check-in. First they made a mistake and tried to charge USD 79.600 for my stay as oppopsed to USD 796 we had agreed.

This hotel exists and survives only because of the oil and gas boom in Angola. Once there is less demand or more competition, this hotel will need to reinvent itself or it will be lost.

I can't recommend the property to anyone, however given the supply / demand situation in Luanda, this probably is not the worst option.

Went there back in 2006. I was supposed to be there for 5 days. After the second day I came back from a business meeting and my key didn't work. Found they had packed my belongings for me and moved me out. They took my alarm clock too. I ended up having to get a room at the Hotel Por du Sol about 1-1/2 hours away. Thanks goodness we had an agent over there or I would have been on the street. Which is a scary thing in Luanda.
