“Great Breakfast”
Reviewed 30 November 2013

We had a wonderful stay with Lee at GT Guest House. The rooms are large and clean and having use of the kitchen and living room is very handy. The breakfasts were some of the best we had in Ethiopia and the location is central and not too hard to get just about anywhere.

This was such a comfortable and friendly place to stay. There were four of us sharing the three bedroom suite - it was perfect - clean, comfortable and spacious. Lee was really helpful too. Breakfast was great.

There's not that much nearby but Lee was always happy to arrange transport (and because it's just off the main road, it was easy to navigate back to). It was about 15 mins walk up to Meskel Square.

We were in Ethiopia for nine weeks with our school aged children. The first week we stayed at another guesthouse, which was lovely, but not well-suited for a long stay with children. The second week we went on a tour of northern Ethiopia and for the remaining 7 weeks, we were at GT Guest House (with one 5 day exception, details below).

GT was such an absolutely wonderful place to spend our time in Ethiopia! We booked the whole first floor for our family of 5 and it was perfect! The kitchen was large and well-stocked, the living room had room to hang out, and 3 bedrooms meant we all had room to spread out and relax. The furniture and linens are "North American" standard (ie, nice soft sheets!) and the suite is very well set up and clean. Large wardrobes in each bedroom meant there was no living out of suitcases. I do wish I had brought more clothes hangers, or that they supplied more. I loved that I could lock the main door and not have to worry about the kids wandering in the night or anything like that.

Lee, the manager, was an absolute God-send. She helped us out with so many things, from dinner orders to acting as an interpreter for our newly adopted child. She made sure we were never lacking anything, and went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable. We weren't sure how long we would be staying, as we were waiting for our child's visa, and so she always checked if we wanted to extend our stay before taking another booking. We ended up needing to stay longer than we thought, and so we found ourselves "homeless" for five days, but Lee helped us find another suitable guesthouse and helped us move our stuff over there. As soon as she had space again, she helped us move it back again!

We often used GT's driver and van, and that was such a big help. It was great not to have to always have made prior arrangements when we decided we wanted to go out.

TG and the other housekeeping staff were always helpful and courteous. They washed a LOT of our laundry while we were there (5 people times 7 weeks equals many loads!) and always did it with a smile. Just a warning, clothes are hand washed, very vigorously, and this sometimes meant things showed wash wear sooner than they might have at home. Not a big deal for us, but if you have favorite items, you might want to wash them yourself. :)

The guesthouse is situated in a neighborhood that has banks, grocery stores, a pharmacy, doctor's office and more in easy walking distance. Lee provided a list of restaurants in the area and we checked almost all of them out over the 7 weeks we were there. We especially liked the Greek Restaurant (Santorini's) and Bunni's (above Chillalo Guesthouse, also down the Greek Embassy road). Be'Emnet and Esosia were other favorites. We felt very safe, even walking after dark as long as we were in a group. There are many shoe shine boys, as there are all over Addis, and I wish I had packed shoes that could be shined! Next time I will for sure. :)

Room Tip: We were on the first floor on the A side, which had the largest kitchen. It also only had showers i...

Stayed there for 2 nights in august and was not disappointed. In fact we were highly satisfied! it provided nice spacious rooms with the best showers we had on our trip in Africa and Lee, the owner, was fantastic!! on the second day in the morning she even surprised me with a birthdaycake!!! how lovely is that!!!
she can arrange everything for you and is in fact always available, from 6 a.m. until midnight!!
also it´s only a short cab ride from the city center so all in all it´s highly recommendable!!

Everything at the GT Guest House was perfect. I travelled as part of a group of 5 people and rented the first level suite which had a well stocked fridge, nice living room and balcony, and two bathrooms for 3 rooms. The beds were comfortable and well kept. The complimentary breakfasts were delicious and different every morning.

The staff were amazing and able to provide tips on interesting places to see and eat near-by and across town. We stayed for 4 days and did both the city tour and the crater lakes tour and enjoyed both immensely.

Would return for sure!

I was impressed by the GT Guesthouse before we'd even arrived in Addis Ababa. The manager, Lee (Lewam) was efficient and helpful in her communication with us from the beginning. She promised to help organise for my Ethiopian-born daughter to have her hair done in true Ethiopian style and forwarded information about activities we might enjoy and told us about the good restaurants nearby.

Her driver met us at the airport at exactly the time we'd arranged. The guesthouse location was exactly as described & was reasonably central. The accommodation itself surpassed my expectations because it was so large and so clean. In my daughter's eyes our rooms were 'like a palace'. The beds were enormous and very comfortable. The bathroom was spotless & we always enjoyed a good supply of hot water.

It was the staff and service we appreciated most of all. An early morning arrival meant we were hungry, & although we had no right to expect breakfast or lunch, we were really well looked after. The included breakfast was always tasty and very generous (our particular favourite was the pancakes).

Lewam exceeded her management role on more than one occasion; by coming to the hairdressers with us, personally guiding our taxi to a particular restaurant, organising for her sister to drive us to church when there were no other drivers available, and lending us some of her personal DVD collection. She gave us access to a local mobile number for a small fee and kept us informed if there were issues relating to water or wifi. We were always confident that she had such issues well in hand and we were rarely effected. The wifi access was very good.

In my case, I was happy to enjoy an adult conversation at least once a day! In fact it seems almost condescending to mention Lewam's English at all, because she speaks and understands the language as well as I do, but I guess it's something others considering the guesthouse may want to know. The rest of the staff did not have the same skills, but TG (who served breakfast etc.) was absolutely delightful, keen to cater to our every need and certainly clear on our requirements. The men who manned the gate were lovely too.

The guesthouse may have been more expensive than some others in Addis Ababa, but given the level of care, comfort and cleanliness, it was worth the money. It was the right choice for us given the nature of our trip. My daughter was back in Ethiopia for the first time in twelve years (after being adopted as a baby) and she needed the feeling of security and comfort we were provided. It became our home for the two weeks we were there.
