Important to understand Ethiopian History : If you want to understand about the Derg impact on Ethiopia is a real personnal expirience. My guide was a former Derg prisioner so it gaves a strong impact.

Altough there is now a fee to enter expect to give some tip to the guide.

“Red Terror Martyrs -- an overview”
Reviewed 1 August 2014

It was a very enjoyable trip to the Museum. It is right next to Meksele Square or also known as Revolutionary Square. This was the location where after the Socialist Revolution of 1974 many rallies were held by the leader Menguisu. He was the leader who caused a lot of change and turmoil in Ethiopia.

It was to this turmoil that the museum was dedicated. The Martyrs Museum tries to show the hardship and the suffering of many of the people of Ethiopia. It was the intellectuals and and the regular people who suffered. It is in many ways very graphic in the depiction of events, but it is meant to be that way.

When you visit the museum there is a suggested donation of 100 birr per group. This is about $5 dollars. The tour guide is also tipped. It is worth having the tour guide. They are in the museum and you get so much more out of your visit. The tour guide asks for about 100 birr also ($5 dollars).

I have included a couple videos that would better acquaint the traveller to the area.
The first on YouTube is of Meskele Square....right next to the Museum:

The second video on YouTube is of the Martyrs Museum itself:

I think it is worth a visit.

“Uncomfortably brilliant-Don't miss it.”
Reviewed 28 July 2014

Spending almost two hours in the company of a guide who painfully relived the reign of terror of the Derg as he guided us through the display was a most humbling and memorable experience. Don't miss it but please be prepared to be confronted by awful truths and the consequences of all our actions and inactions. The visit lasts with you long after you have left.

“Moving Memorial”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

While it is difficult to see all that went on during this tragic time in Ethiopia this is a very well organized and complete museum. Definitely a must visit.

“Compelling exhibits give the voiceless a home”
Reviewed 17 July 2014

No matter whether you are familiar with the Derg this museum offers you a rich experience. Although you could walk it unaided, I strongly recommend taking a guided tour. The guides really bring the exhibits to life and offer a perspective (sometimes first-hand) which makes the compelling evocative.
