The views from just a little way down from the summit are the best over the city of Addis Ababa. At the top of the hill there is the Maryam Church, but I would personally be content to just watch the city from this great height for a period of time.

Added to the spectacle of this site are the women carrying wood down Entoto Hill towards the city to sell as fuel. You cannot help but be amazed at the strength of these women of all ages carrying the most oversized cargos of firewood on their backs.

Entoto Hill is a must visits place in Addis Ababa. The trip passes through various sections of the city where you see different ways of life. When you get to the hill, you feel like in Australia as there are many Eucalyptus trees, originally imported from Australia during Emperor Menelik II's time. One of the original trees still stand strong behind his humble Palace. Sacred churches, and the museum are other reasons why people travel to this important site in Addis.

Nice trip outside Addis. You can enjoy the ride and the view, visit the church and the school and watch the locals praying.

I made a somewhat spontaneous stop at Entoto Hill during my first day in Addis with my local tour guide. We took a mini-bus to the top of the hill, a process that took close to 45 minutes. Although the church was closed we were able to see the entirety of Addis Ababa from the hill and take a tour of Menelik’s Palace, the latter of which was a pleasant diversion at best. The city view seemed obscured by smog and to be honest in a town that lacks any identifiable features it was tough to make anything out definitively. The highlight of the visit came at the end of the afternoon when we stopped by a local watering-hole to enjoy some draft beer, tej (honey wine) and my first Ethiopian coffee ceremony.

Taken as a whole my visit here was a bit underwhelming due to the difficult access to the mountain and the church-closure. I wasn’t really in the mood to “escape from it all” as I had just arrived in town so the journey for that reason fell a bit flat. The human interaction with the locals was by far the highlight for me but to be fair others may find a visit here useful depending on their moods, goals, and timing of visit.

The churches on this hill are not really that unique...especially if you plan to visit other parts of the country. But the view of Addis and the feeling of being momentarily outside the city is worthwhile. I especially enjoyed the drive to the top on a Saturday, when people were carrying their goods to market. However, hiring a car and guide for the day can get expensive.
