“Great place for elite running”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 March 2014

This resort is the perfect place for elite runners wanting to explore the Ethiopian way of training. High altitude, stable weather and good variety of the nearby trails. Easily reached from the airport with the included pickup service from the hotel. Full-board options with three meals per day offers several dishes and adequate nutrition for heavy physical activities. The beautiful garden was frequently used for breakfast. However, during the four weeks we stayed at the hotel we experienced the occasional water and electricity problems that are common in the whole area.

Stayed at Yaya Village for 4 nights. Complimentary shuttle with a stay of three nights or more. Driver was there waiting, even though we were nearly 30 minutes late. Safe transport and friendly smile. Arrived at check in, was offered to look at a choice of rooms, picked the one liked the best, very comfortable.
Upon check in as well as throughout the stay one staff member really made the stay nice! Dagmawit, really looked after things! You know someone really adds to the hotel stay when as a guest you are hoping they are on duty, in the morning would look towards desk hoping to see Dagmawit. The rest of the staff was nice too, the thing is Dagmawat would walk, call search out solutions to any of the questions or plans. Not one to sit behind a desk and accept no solutions when one can be found. In addition, the wait staff named Tsigereda was super pleasant, efficient and another of the staff looked forward to seeing daily!
As for the property, the view is amazing, flew kite, steam sauna, walking and enjoying coffee and meeting some of the athletes and trainers. There were momentary issues with water but this is not a hotel issue rather an Ethiopia issue. The longest time without was about 15 minutes, power outages are common but the back-up generator would always come on right away, no discomfort was even felt throughout the stay! Food was good the Yaya coffee and the local Yaya dish was the best throughout the stay. I wish they had a few more local items on the menu. I did not try but I bet if asked to prepare something special they could and would do it if at all possible.
I would go back to Yaya Village again. Worth considering to get out of the city in just a short 20-30 minute drive. Night and day peaceful place compared to the hustle of Addis. So close Addis makes this a great choice even on a short stopover.

Room Tip: Internet works with rooms closer to reception.

The yaya village hotel and resort was a very nice end to a long Ethiopian journey. It is located high in the mountain above Addis, in a setting surrounded by trees. The resort is a retreat for world-class runners and it contains a short and longer running track, as well as several soccer fields. The food at the resort is health-conscious and offers a great variety. The Indian food was a pleasant surprise.

The rooms are clean, modern and comfortable.

The resort is really geared for the elite runner, and so those of us who like to run, but aren't professionals felt a bit on our own. The resort staff was not always helpful. Clear information about the resort, its amenities, etc. weren't provided. The internet didn't work at all. I think, in general, the hotel gets less attention than the training facilities.

Having said this, we very much enjoyed our time at YaYa and would return. It was really fun for the kids, who had lots of open space to explore and run around. We enjoyed the horse-back riding, although it was really just a guided walk about the resort.

Yaya Athletic Village was a great find.

Had told my cab driver (a gem) to help me plan my Sunday.
Took me to Entoto which had stunning views of Addis Ababa plus the St.Mary's church is so well kept.

Next stop was Raphael Church.
This is not so well known do there were hardly any tourists. But the visit was well worth it.

Then we went to Yaya Village for lunch. Being Sunday there were many other people here.

The place is so serene and the location is so great you would want to just seat and relax.

Service was fast and very friendly. The normal Ethiopian cuisine is served together with pizza and sandwiches.

Highly recommend this is you spare time in Addis Ababa.

Drive down to Sululta and on your right you will come to Honeymoon Resort. Try the Tej . It is very good and you can taste the freshness of it.Apparently they brew it here them selves. Try their tibs made from goat meat. So fresh and succulent.

We stayed in Yaya in November 2013 after spending 3 days in Addis, and found it an oasis of calm after the hustle and pollution in the city. The rooms are large and comfortable with TV and a nice en suite. There is a fridge but no tea/coffee facilities, in the cooler months extra blankets may be needed , just ask at reception, as Yaya is at altitude nights can be chilly. Breakfast is served in the restaurant and a varied menu is offered. Wi Fi is available for a small fee 2 Birr per megabyte but its very slow an unreliable.

The facilities at Yaya are great, a 400 m cinder track, football field, a gym, sauna, steam room and massage, with plenty of staff around to assist you. Horse riding is also available, we took a two and a half hour ride up En Toto which was enormous fun, the ponies are in excellent condition, and keen, ours only had 2 speeds, fast and faster.

The Yaya village offers a talent development program to Ethiopian female athletes (age16-18), the aim is for them to become empowered through running, their motto is "Equality for the long run" the program is staffed through volunteers. While staying at Yaya it is possible to train with the Yaya girls and learn more about the program.

I often come here on weekends but still I could't see a satisfactory service at this place. The kids like the play ground and the horse ride(but not to compare with Equus). We once waited for 30 minutes to receive our cold drink. The meal we ordered ended up circulating the "whole" compound with band of flies because they couldn't find the "owner". The traditional coffee was an embarrassing to drink such coffee in land of mother of coffee. It was too sour and dangerous to consume. The horse guider once tried to reduce our time by half if not we had followed the clock. And on other occasion we asked for the bill and it took long minutes so we had to start leaving the compound to see if anyone will notice us. But, then came running "our" waitress with the forgotten bill. We ended up paying our bill on the main gate. Last Saturday we were served bloody chicken. They must train up their waitress. Very poor standard.

Being 5' 9" and around 120kg, visiting this athletes village was the perfect choice for me. Thankfully I could avoid training and enjoy super food and great kids facilities in this sublimely pure aired location that is only 20-30mins drive up and out of Addis. My son flew his kite and my daughter went riding. We also introduced friends to this venue and they loved it also. One note of caution, on your drive there and back take extra care to avoid the lunatic lorry and bus drivers who think it clever to overtake on blind bends. A must visit place for families.
