“Taitu Hotel : A hotel with great services at affordable prices in Addis Ababa”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2012

Being the oldest hotel in Ethiopia, Taitu hotel is still providing great services with amazingly cheap prices. Room prices start at 10$ when reserved through www.azebot.com which helped me to book with the hotel online at a discounted rate. The place is mainly suited for tourists. I saw people from various countries enjoying their stay in the hotel. I am from Israel and I stay there for 10 days with my family and this is the second time I come to this hotel. The people working there are very hospitable and I felt secured like I am in my own home. The hotel is decorated by various traditional and cultural artifacts that makes it unique from other hotels in the city. It is located just few miles away from the air-port and in the center of the city where there are lots of supermarkets, shops, cinemas and night clubs close to it. So to speak, my stay was so enjoyable, secure and hilghly cost effective. Cheers!

Room Tip: we used family suite and E block rooms and they are very nice

Any imperfections of the place are well outweighed by the historical atmosphere. Family of friends were supposed to pick me up at the Bole airport for my 1:00 a.m. arrival. It didn't happen - somehow I purchased a SIM card - and Taitu had a room. It was certainly my good fortune. The staff were all friendly and helpful, and gave me great information when I was adapting to my unexpected situation. It ended up my most enjoyable stay during my 40 days in Ethiopia. I booked a room in the historic building for my return to Addis, but ended up in one of the back buildings instead. It was a little disappointing, but that room was fine. I'm sure I'd stay here again if I return to Addis.

Room Tip: The historic building is much more atmospheric than the rooms in back.

Great location at Piazza, the heart of Addis, a popular area.
We stayed at the frontside suite (50$) and our room was very spacious, and nice, ok, tv was not working, and the bathroom needed a facelift, (so do the most bathrooms there) still we loved the original furnishure, balcony and atmosphere.
They have a excellent restaurant, very cheap prices and home grown organic food.
The Cesar Salade is the best i ever eat! Thanks to the Italian chef! (many diplomats go eat there)
The staff is off the best we experienced in Ethiopia, very friendly & helpful, quick and professional. High standards. Also or 2 year old boy loved there, very child friendly place.
Its a clean place with a beautiful garden were you find very interesting travelers from whole over the world.
We stayed in 14 hotels in 2 months, from cheap to very expensive, the best hotel was the Haile resort in Awassa, and then on number 2 the Taitu hotel who has stolen my families heart.
We come back to the Taitu, for shure.

Room Tip: Do ask for a room in the old building. The new building sucks, but very cheap.

The Taitu is a well established meeting place for expats and travellers in Addis, nicer and not quite as notorious as the Baro. I stayed in the rear block, where the rooms severely need to be power-hosed with disinfectant, and would say if you are at all finicky about cleanliness, you should go elsewhere. I prioritize atmosphere, and loved the Taitu's. There's a lovely big terrace where you can sip coffee or beer or have a full meal: people greet each other freely out here and it's very easy to make friends. The hotel is attached to a brilliant jazz bar which also serves as a meeting place. The atmosphere is added to by the friendly (but not smarmy) staff.

If you like things clean, quiet, and, uh, chaste, this hotel is not for you.

If you want to meet fascinating people and drink and converse into the night, the Taitu's the place.

We previously stayed in a "budget" hotel 2 minutes around the corner which we found from the LP, however having spoke to friends who stayed here and had look around - we soon moved. The rooms are pretty good value (varying if you stay in the main hotel building or the separate block behind) and the Hotel filled with character and history. The location is very good and service we found good, although a little slow at times in the restaurant, although to be fair it does get quite busy.

Great looking place steeped in history so well worth a visit. Dates back a century or so and the atmosphere is unique in Addis. Unfortunately the plumbing dates from the same period so be prepared for some frustrating and challenging experiences. Check carefully what kind of room you have, whether it has a bathroom, and where it is located. The main building is charming and the centre of the social scene. Almost all visitors will congregate and socialise in the ground floor area that is bar, restaurant, work place, art centre, and meeting place all rolled into one. A great area to sit and watch the ebb and flow of the scene. BBC showing quietly in the corner allows for an discrete update on what is happening outside Addis. The block of rooms in the back of the hotel are soviet style functional without charm but this is compensated by functioning plumbing--although this may vary from day to day. Prices are very reasonable of course. the most I have paid is 492 Birr (about $30) for a room in the main building with a bathroom.
The food is OK. The breakfast is a modest buffet at $3. Better to await until midday and sample a very nice buffet lunch at about the same price. The location is the Piazza district is an adventure not for the faint hearted, but for the explorer it is a lot of fun. keep your money in your front pocket.

Room Tip: Check carefully what kind of room you are getting and if possible ask to see the room.

Easy to review - the main building is great and atmospheric - book it if at all possible. If not, the rear block is a bit of a dump and no better than any other budget hostel. The food is very overpriced and not very good - head out for lots of better Ethiopian choices. Service at the office was so-so, although the buggers promised us an airport pick up at 3 am and then failed to appear on the night.

Room Tip: Insist on the main block
