The Ghion hotel is a nice hotel, the staff were beyond means very kind. The service of the hotel was okay, but could of been much better. The rooms were very clean, and not smelly, which i was grateful for. The breakfast buffet was very good, I left satisfied every morning after breakfast. They do have a pool with other things you could also do there.

If you enjoy luxury hotels this isn't for you but I have stayed at the Ghion twice now & it would still be my choice when staying in Addis Ababa. The hotel is set in large, well manicured gardens which are a popular place for wedding parties. On one occasion there seemed to be three going on simultaneously! The Hotel itself would have been imposing in its day but is looking a little tired now. Faded carpets & faded uniforms are the order of the day but the staff are very friendly & helpful. There is a branch of the Dashen Bank in the lobby that seems to be open outside normal banking hours & even when they are closed you can change money at reception at the same rate. The business centre will fix you up with a local sim card which worked fine in my Blackberry. Local calls are very cheap. There was also an ATM machine in the lobby but this was out of order for the entire two weeks. The lifts have no inner doors so beware of catching fingers! The water pressure is good in the showers but getting the temperature right can be a challenge. Wifi is good but expensive at $12 for 24 hours.
Ok so not everything works properly, the breakfast is adequate at best & service at reception is pretty slow at times but the staff bend over backwards to be helpful & there is a real 'old world charm' to the place. When our transfer to the airport didn't turn up the reception staff quickly organised one of their cars to take us.

The best part of this hotel is the large park it sits in, and that it´s close to the central parts of Addis, opposite Meskel Square. The park stretches as far as the National palace, and is a popular spot for events like weddings and concerts. The park is rumored to be a little unsafe after dark, but arond the hotel there is a lot of guards, so I felt safe. There´s also a large swimming pool in the park.

The hotel itself consists of several buildings; the most important being the main hotel, the Gondar Blocks (smaller apartments, and the conference center. I stayed in the Gondar Blocks, which are simple, a bit wore down, but otherwise ok. Each block has two apartments, each with a living-room with dbl. bed, a smaller bedroom, a kitchen (which did not seem to have been in use the past few years...) and a bathroom with tub and shower. the apartments on the ground floor also has a patio on the back with a table and some chairs. Rooms fairly clean and quiet, slept well during my stay:-)

The rooms in the main building is said to be of a lower standard.

The hotel seems heavily overstaffed, mainly due to a system where each person has his/her limited tasks; one person serves the beer; one person recieves the payment, and hands it over to the cashier for counting and handeling change. Keeps the people working:-) To get two glasses and a roll of toiletpaper to our room took four people and 40 minutes...

Staff is friendly, and the service is mostly good, even if the system mentioned makes some tasks slow. The food is adequate, but there are several better options for a good dinner in walking distance. The lobby has several small shops, with a nice supply of books, jewelry and handicrafts aimed at the visitors. Prices are average, so you can do a bit of shopping here if you don´t want to go to one of the markets...

The hotel has services aimed at business-guests, so it´s easy to exchange money, get copies made etc.

Would stay again, mainly because of the central location.

Room Tip: Try the Gondar Blocks instead of the rooms in the main building.

Like many state owned hotels in Ethiopia the Ghion is a mothballed hotel, that charges handsome rates and offers barely maintained rooms and dopey service. Ancient staff in starched up uniforms clock in and out day after day and seem bored, bothered and bugged when you request service for them. Was it not for the magnificent gardens, great birds and convenience of it's rather pricey traditional restaurant...I would not return. The main restaurant food and service is a joke. Major refurbishment is required here, but it is a great investment opportunity if you could bring in a vibrant staff and slowly modernize the hotel sector by sector. Their apartments on the far end of the gardens are however very nice, and if not overpriced they would be great value for money.

Room Tip: Apartments....

The setting and grounds of this hotel are excellent with big mature trees and nicely maintained gardens. The public areas inside are also pleasant and the restaurant is very good by Ethiopian standards - most of the dishes on the menu are available, arrive quickly and taste good. The rooms are less great, in need of an upgrade - which is true of the whole country really. Service was OK in a country where service doesn't come naturally. Check in was efficient and the money change service worked OK. Several souvenir shops in the reception area were expensive. Good security both on the gate and on the door. Parking looked a bit of a nightmare.

If you're staying on a Saturday, don't miss the amazing wedding show in the grounds. Every upmarket wedding for miles around seems to come to take photos in the gardens, and the outfits are fantastic. From about 3pm till 6pm.

I stayed here for 2 nights in March for business as I wanted to try a new hotel close to the office. The hotel has beautiful gardens which are a pleasure to walk in. The decor is dated and reminds me of 'Fawlty Towers' it has a certain charm. The rooms however need some work, there are no curtains, no hot water and no flushing toilet. Internet is available at a cost ($12 a day!). International restaurant is average but the Ethiopian cultural restaurant is great. Staff are pleasant and willing to help. I would suggest a 1 night stay only to sample this piece of Ethiopian history then move to a hotel with more creature comforts.

The hotel is very dated , but the landscape makes up for it!!! It is conviently located in the center of the city. You will find that some days the water is not warm for your showers.
The beds were comfortable enough. Just remember you are in Africa. You are staying in luxury in comparison to most Africans.
